News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Even if, medically and biologically, this diet is compatible with humans, do people really want to give up eating food for taste? The "spice of life" in a literal sense.
I thought this was common knowledge. All those reports that Bush was said to have been supplied with prior to 9/11, even days before.

It's no surprise that spying is ongoing. The sheer scale of the surveillance is what really irks me.

Re:Snowden Petition Is Useless on Friday June 21, 2013 @06:19PM (#5921361)
This implies that the petitions that don't follow the provisions are actually useful.
I thought my asteroids game in assembly was cool. Great job!
Re:How fucked is SSL? on Wednesday June 12, 2013 @02:31AM (#5866824)
TL;DR: If the CAs are compromised, the protocols they use are compromised.
Re:The Losers of WWDC on Monday June 10, 2013 @10:36PM (#5859250)
Doesn't Yahoo power the weather app, making that point meaningless?

Also, how does this make these companies "losers"? Competition is good for business, and the businesses that are in place and have current user bases will win out if they have better (or even on-par) products.

Re:Apple announces iOS 7 on Monday June 10, 2013 @02:32PM (#5856141)
This... looks like Windows Phone.
Re:Apple Updates Safari on Monday June 10, 2013 @02:19PM (#5856054)
Seems BS to me. Looks just like their "performance" pages for the Macbook Pro on the Apple website.
Re:Apple Updates The Mac Pro on Monday June 10, 2013 @02:17PM (#5856038)
"Can't innovate anymore, my ass".

Uh... what exactly is being "innovated" here?

"Microsoft cannot provide those guarantees. Neither can any other company."

The most telling and most important line in the article. Recent days have made it abundantly clear that anyone under US jurisdiction is susceptible to scrutiny and surveillance.

Because complaining on the Internet is way easier than doing something proactive. Less dangerous, too.
Re:Wikipedia’s Emergency on Wednesday June 05, 2013 @07:34PM (#5829389)
The Wikipedia ideals of having open, unbiased, and free access to information and being able to freely collaborate and edit articles directly conflict. If editing is "free", so too is slander and misinformation.

Unfortunately, I have no good solution to this problem. But then again, neither does Wikipedia.

I wasn't aware people actually purchased Mac Pros with great regularity. I don't know of a single person who owns one. The lack of customization, absurd cost, and plethora of superior competitors seems to discourage most people from this particular market.
Re:Didn't Get the Job? You'll Never Know Why on Wednesday June 05, 2013 @01:50PM (#5827307)
This always bothers me when I'm interviewing. I've gotten the "better suited candidate" as well as the "lack of experience" and "not right at this time" excuses. How does that help me in any way as a job seeker? I am, in some way, "not right" for the position. How? Too shy, or too forward? Too young or too old? Experienced in the wrong technologies, or not experienced enough in the right ones? Or both?

This just leads to depressing frustration. I want to improve and be the right candidate, but I don't know how and no one will help me figure out how.

Luckily, I have a job now. But God forbid when I have to start the interviewing process again.

Re:Show HN: Hacker News for Windows Phone on Tuesday June 04, 2013 @08:15PM (#5822927)
Taking a bold dive into the depths of despair that is HN's Microsoft-friendly sub-community. Kudos, good sir, I applaud you!
As bradhe stated, it falls under giving aid to enemies.
Yes, the US gets away with human rights atrocities, and yes, Manning should not be tortured. However, one can't ignore the fact that he released US government secrets to a non-government entity. That is treason. Manning will receive some sort of punishment because he committed treason, and treason is breaking the law. It's fairly simple.
The reactions stop at 56 because Iron has the highest binding energy of any element, which the author doesn't mention. Even under the extreme conditions of stellar nuclear fusion, the binding energy cannot be overcome past this point.

However, this doesn't really explain the abundance of red paint. It explains the abundance of iron and lighter elements. The fact that Iron Oxide has a red color has nothing to do with the "physics of dying stars".

Re:The Facebook experiment has failed on Monday June 03, 2013 @02:05AM (#5811621)
Typical overzealous and incorrect analysis. Facebook may have failed for the author, but Facebook is not a failure. Its user base, advertising base and page traffic paint quite the opposite picture.

Also, "people can message each other, post text updates and pictures". This is exactly what I use Facebook for, and it works pretty well for me. I get updates and pictures from my friends and family, and I have tuned it such that I can see more content from people with whom I don't interact on a regular basis. Sounds like a case of user error to me.

Re:SpaceNet: A successor to the Internet on Sunday June 02, 2013 @11:31PM (#5811199)
The example for transport encoding doesn't seem all the more simplified than things as they currently stand. Sure, the field names are a little shorter and easier to read, but there's still a lot of (necessary) complexity in that encoding.

The OSI model of the Internet is built around being extremely fault tolerant and extremely generalized, so that anyone can connect any device and expect a reasonable amount of functionality. Sure, protocols could be simplified or refactored so the topics are easier to approach, but I don't think the ideas presented in this post would bring about a large degree of simplicity.

Also, simplifying the protocols, even by a huge degree, would not substantially grow the proportion of the population that understands them. People work to understand the OSI model out of necessity, not convenience.

Re:Teardown and exploration of Apple's Magsafe connector on Sunday June 02, 2013 @11:20PM (#5811166)
Predictable enough, but who knows.
Re:Teardown and exploration of Apple's Magsafe connector on Sunday June 02, 2013 @08:01PM (#5810617)
Very cool! I wonder if everything holds about the same way for the new 'L-shaped' connectors?
The LAPD has (rightfully) gotten a bad rap lately, but what do you expect when you have a realistic, armed, life-size military figure facing outward toward the street...
Re:Yoga and entrepreneurship on Saturday June 01, 2013 @05:32PM (#5806107)
Damn, I thought yoga was supposed to help you calm down and chill out.

I did really like the author's parallelisms to entrepreneurship, though.

Re:New Camera Sensor Eliminates Need for Flash on Saturday June 01, 2013 @03:32PM (#5805570)
If it gathers light in the infrared spectrum, how is noise eliminated? Ambient room temperature is an infrared-peak blackbody. I'd like to see more on the filtering that has to go into images taken with such a sensor.
Re:Dear Halo 4 QA tester: We don’t need to strike on Friday May 31, 2013 @06:48PM (#5801720)
This is a hilariously fantastic response to the original article. The author does a great job of cutting through the self-congratulatory bullshit of the original post while simultaneously giving an accurate picture on the current climate in the industry.

Kudos, Ben Kuchera

This isn't uniformly true, though. The original Xbox was, for all intents and purposes, and amazing product launch. Same with the Kinect, Office 2003, Windows XP, etc.

This models seems to hold more truth in recent years, however. I can't come up with a solid reason why this is, but it isn't an absolute truth.

Re:The True Size of Africa (2010) [pdf] on Thursday May 30, 2013 @12:20AM (#5790909)
Also unsettling is how they say "all of Europe" is included. There is absolutely no way that chunk labeled "Eastern Europe" contains Ukraine, Belarus, Romania, Bulgaria, etc. It's large enough to maybe represent just the Ukraine.
Re:The True Size of Africa (2010) [pdf] on Wednesday May 29, 2013 @10:51PM (#5790588)
Hey guys... did you know that continents are often bigger than countries? Mind blowing.
Re:Coffee vs. beer: which drink makes you more creative? on Wednesday May 29, 2013 @05:44PM (#5789360)
Yep, just noticed. I clicked on that link originally, but it didn't load for some reason.
