News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Yeah, it likely should have.

I've however been on the receiving end of some very odd board behavior and most founders I know have a story or two as well. I don't always take board decisions at face value. Reality is often askew, personality disorders run rampant in places of power, and there can be unknown incentives at play.

Sam lost the plot for me. He took too many interviews which led me to not trust him. Last straw came with him standing by Anthropic one day then throwing them under the bus the next. He showed little awareness on why that is problematic.
Quite excited to try this.

There is also WAF.

Buildforce | Mobile Developer, All-Level Engineers | Austin, Texas | Full-Time | Remote (with option to come into office) | [email protected] or https://joinbuildforce.recruitee.com/

Buildforce is building a marketplace for construction tradespeople to get jobs with construction firms. We grew 10% week over week in 2021 and are off to an even better year in 2022.

You'll work in a small but rapidly growing team building product for workers, construction firms, and our internal users.

We're an AWS Typescript shop. On the FE, we're writing React/React Native. On the BE, we're Serverless with SST Framework.

We're hiring mobile engineers (React Native) and mid-level to senior engineers working mainly on the backend.

Reach out to me at [email protected] or view our jobs https://joinbuildforce.recruitee.com/.

Buildforce | Remote / Office in Austin, TX | Full-time https://buildforce.com/

Buildforce is helping electricians find jobs in Texas. You'll have a huge impact on a business already growing at 10% every week since the beginning of 2021 and in the biggest industry vertical in the United States ($1.3 trillion a year in annual construction volume).

We're a full-stack typescript/javascript shop building React and React Native apps on AWS that talk to a GraphQL API. We're looking for great backend, mobile, and low code engineers.

Backend Engineer – We have a severlesss backend on AWS that uses SST framework. Our API is an Apollo GraphQL API. Some AWS services that we use are Lambas, RDS, Cognito, API Gateway, S3, Kinesis, and more. https://joinbuildforce.recruitee.com/o/senior-backend-engine...

Mobile Engineer - We have a React Native app that talks to our backend through an Apollo GraphQL API. https://joinbuildforce.recruitee.com/o/react-native-engineer

Low Code Engineer – We are building internal tools through Retool. https://joinbuildforce.recruitee.com/o/low-code-engineer

Would love to chat with you at michael [at] buildforce.com

Re:Retool Raises $50M from Sequoia on Wednesday October 21, 2020 @12:47AM (#24844812)
We’ve been using Retool for the past few months and I just want to say thanks. It’s saved us a slew of time and y’all are always responsive to any issues I’ve run into.
Re:The Serverless Revolution Has Stalled on Monday October 12, 2020 @11:34PM (#24762003)
We've been using full Serverless for the past year with Serverless framework little to no issues. Sure, a single server would be a little bit quicker but that is my only major complaint.

Looks like an MVP to me.
Re:Airbnb Is Moving Off of React Native (2018) on Thursday June 18, 2020 @12:12AM (#23559734)
I have not but my co-founder worked at Uber for 5+ years. He said they had engineers basically building whatever anyone wanted. He said they built their own Slack more or less just because they could.
If you aren't familiar with it, take a look at their examples. You can do whatever you'd like with it.
We're pretty new to it but anything and everything ops related is running through it with minimal effort –

* Lookup various account types and see all relationships

* Editing accounts

* Changing permissions and verifying accounts

* Uploading logos to S3

All in on AWS for BE. Just about everything you need is there for free or close to free. Netlify for FE hosting just because it’s so easy to tie up to Github. Retool for ops. Metabase for BI. Seed for Serverless CI/CD.
Re:Gatsby raises $28M Series B led by Index Ventures on Wednesday May 27, 2020 @10:12PM (#23332667)
I've been involved in a site that has over 10k pages and it worked fine. Sanity has a preview feature and Gatsby incremental builds are available now (which I haven't used yet) but should bring your build times down significantly.
Re:Rules for Data Modeling with DynamoDB on Wednesday April 08, 2020 @02:49PM (#22815778)
I disagree. I spent a few months with it and it was a bit of a nightmare. It fits certain use cases and AWS and others push it as a good use case for more than it should be.

Have geo data? Need a count? Need to look something up for your team member and you don't have time to setup BI tools? Want to query something differently because of design changes? The answer is pretty much no or you can but it'll take some extra thing for all of those.

We ended up picking up an Aurora Serverless and it is working just fine. We can quickly make changes as business cases change, our entire team can query it for now (until we have fancier tools on the biz end), and we are able to move much more quickly.

I've enjoyed using Gatsby in a hybrid approach to combine marketing and a web app for MVPs. It's allowed me to get up and running quickly and haven't run into any major issues so far.
Thanks for sharing. I just recently deactivated Instagram for ~3 weeks, logged back in to download my photos, and then tried to deactivate again.

At first, it failed and threw an error message about enabling cookies which made no sense. Then I got a pathetic error message stating "Sorry, you can only disable your account once a week. Try again in a few days." Pretty pathetic.

Re:Now Bigger Than eBay, Shopify Sets Its Sights on Amazon on Friday August 23, 2019 @09:59PM (#20784689)
Meh, I bought it back in 2016 in the 20s. Also bought Twilio around then. Hit some downturn/burnout freelancing and sold it not long after. You win some and you lose some.
Re:Splunk acquires cloud monitoring service SignalFx for $1.05B on Wednesday August 21, 2019 @09:50PM (#20763897)
I've heard of this happening in Austin with one firm specifically. For the most part, they have a bad rep around town.
Re:Startups from Y Combinator’s S19 Demo Day 2 on Wednesday August 21, 2019 @09:51AM (#20757115)
The same idea was built in Austin and acquired. I had the same thoughts.

http://www.siliconhillsnews.com/2018/05/02/meta-saas-acquire...

Sure but, these issues come to surface much quicker.

Every time I've started a new iOS project in the past ~2 years, I've reached out to a handful of developers and managers on how cross-platform is going for them. None have been completely sold on it. The ones that are, are the ones that have been doing it for a few months. I've come back around to talk to them months later and they aren't so confident in the decision anymore.

Most cross-platform solutions are great in the beginning and then the problems start to come to surface as teams grow, requirements change, bugs are harder to track down, code needs to be updated, the next hot cross-platform framework comes along with new promises, etc.
Re:New research on PTSD in elephants and other animals on Saturday August 10, 2019 @01:29PM (#20663362)
I wonder the same whenever I see animal posts like this. They experience the same shit we do.
This article resonates with me. As of late, social media has been a negative for my life. It is terribly distracting. I pay attention to who interacts with my content more than I should. I just deactivated Instagram (user ~#66,000 so I signed up in the first few days) for the first time this week (after deleting the app many times) and it has been very refreshing.

It is absolutely time to modernize here. The 40 hour work week dates back to the industrial revolution.
Re:15-Inch MacBook Pro Battery Recall Program on Thursday June 20, 2019 @02:33PM (#20235812)
I have the 2016 15" MacBook Pro model and the battery won't take a charge. I have to keep it always plugged in. Apparently I'm not in this recall.

It is a total bummer because it takes Apple 3-5 days to fix this. The batter has 476 cycles on it and Apple rates it at 1000.

I see Dodge Promasters replacing some of these in Austin, Texas.
This is great. I wish more companies did something like this.
