Very cool website. I'm not sure if this is worthy of adding, but sometimes if I eat something extremely salty I get a pain in what feels like my saliva glands for 3-5 seconds or so after the first taste (it then goes away).

I think it's the same as in this reddit post where others describe it: https://www.reddit.com/r/DAE/comments/1hw4xx3/dae_ever_get_a...

I've had this many times before too.

Agreed.

Notepad's got Markdown, it's what LLMs crave.

yeah I played bg3 with controller split screen with my wife the entire playthrough. Normally, I would've strongly preferred KB+M for such a game. We definitely got used to it after several hours.

I'm not sure if I can recall any tips other than just keep at it and it'll eventually become muscle memory. I don't think it's as good as KB+M but it wasn't something that was bugging me once we got significantly into the game. YMMV.

I wish I could go back and experience soulslikes for the first time! They really are a treat if you experience them as you describe (not everyone feels that way, but I certainly do).

You're in luck because that subgenre has exploded in popularity and there are a lot of good ones out there if you want to keep playing them these days. Elden Ring is one of the best though for sure.

Re:LaborBerlin: State-of-the-Art 16mm Projector on Saturday June 21, 2025 @04:18PM (#44340459)
Thanks for sharing. I was a projectionist at a local theater in my 20s, and I have very fond memories of working with the older machines. There was something so satisfying working them on Summer nights in the booth alone.

The move to digital projectors everywhere was very shortly after I left.

Always cool to see people help keep the medium alive.

Np, I got your friend request. Sent the invite, it might take 1-2 days and it'll email you at the addy attached to your Steam acct.
Re:Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Update on Saturday November 16, 2024 @12:35AM (#42154584)
The hype died down a little since most people who wanted in got invites by now. Still has a healthy player base and is a very good game though imo. If you want an invite feel free to add me on Steam, my friend code is 216728
I don't watch football, but in hockey they project digital ads onto the ice and parts of the plexiglass around the rink during the broadcasts that aren't there IRL. They are often vibrant and look out of place, it's quite possible that's what you were seeing.
The killer feature for me with this app is the stupidly easy CSV loading. I deal with huge CSVs at work often. SQLite Browser is the easiest, fastest and most lightweight UI tool to analyze them I've tried. It can load millions of records into a table in like <3 seconds. Then obviously you can query the CSV data via SQL.
Good post, I agree with most of it. One that goes hand-in-hand with "just ask the question" is learning to know when to pivot. If you've hit a blocker, whether it's something to do with waiting on a teammate, client, or answer to a hard question, consider pivoting to another task to knock out some easy wins.

Ideally the task you pivot to should require minimal context switching to get going. This way you won't lose productivity. Often if the blocker is a hard problem and you go back to it later, you might have a good idea after stepping away for a bit as a bonus.

It can go both ways. The most common one I've seen is definitely taking too long to ask about something. The other is asking too many trivial questions about things you can look up in minutes or ought to know given your job.

I think the problem is knowing when to ask is like many things a skill that gets better with experience. It isn't obvious especially to newer people. I also think if you're a senior you should be much more forgiving of juniors when it comes to this stuff. We were all there once.

I think asking too slowly tends to be caught more easily in things like standup before it snowballs. Asking too quickly tends to be habitual and seems to do more damage since it's harder to notice when managing projects, and often under the vague auspices of "pairing."

As with most things there's a balance. I've found if I try to learn one or two new features or shortcuts every couple weeks with the tools I use extensively, eventually I do get a sharp axe.

Typing speed is nice but not an important metric I don't think. It's like someone speeding past you on the road only for you to see them at the next red light. Other things will slow you down like code review or needing to wait until a set time to deploy. Also things like copilot and advanced auto-completion are making it less relevant.

Re:It's All Bullshit on Tuesday December 26, 2023 @08:07AM (#38771446)
How did you ultimately find them out?
Re:It's All Bullshit on Tuesday December 26, 2023 @08:00AM (#38771393)
Sounds eerily familiar. We've got someone who has done almost no work in their first 10 months. They were already assigned to a project I was on once, lied about progress repeatedly forcing me to pick up the work when it came time for us to integrate that piece. I made the situation well known to managers and they acknowledged it and even apologized. Yet this person is still somehow around and doing the same old, despite their kanban not moving for months and it being glaringly obvious. This worker abuses the low oversight, flexible hours and time off, and disappears on Slack all the time.

I kind of gave up caring and expecting anything will get done about it; it's way beyond ridiculous or any personal / health issue excuse at this point (and the company has a leave of absence policy for this stuff).

I think this actually might just happen sometimes in the industry, but it was the first time I've seen it and it's absolutely baffling. I just hope to not be on the same project as this person again, because if I am I'm going to have to have an awkward conversation with my manager about it since I'm not there to do 2 people's jobs. I really like the job in every other regard and don't typically work with that person, so it's a weird situation to say the least..

Re:Zork for the PDP-11 / RT-11 recreated on Thursday November 23, 2023 @08:42AM (#38392635)
Awesome, thanks. I was getting some sort of version error with the game file I was trying, but https://eblong.com/infocom/gamefiles/zork1-r119-s880429.z3 did the trick (renamed to zork.iml and copied into the vm).

Also in case anyone else is new to simh, you put the files in question in a folder then run path/to/pdp11.exe wherever simh installed it. CTRL+E is how you suspend the VM and can give it further commands from a simh> prompt, then the 'c' command to continue. Once inside the pdp11 vm "DIR" to confirm the stuff you're copying actually exists.

I've actually never gotten anything like this running before, very cool.

Re:Zork for the PDP-11 / RT-11 recreated on Thursday November 23, 2023 @07:57AM (#38392249)
Actual game files seem to be here: https://github.com/historicalsource/

I also had trouble finding the window binaries for simh on the official github repo and wound up using a fork: https://github.com/bscottm/open-simh/releases/tag/simh-4.1.0...

For the people saying it's fine for them, YouTube was blocking access but only doing it for certain accounts and only after you watched more than a few videos. My personal account was affected but not my work one.

I was using Firefox + uBlock Origin and the site would periodically stop working. Clearing cache and updating the uBO lists would fix it, but only temporarily. No idea if the situation has changed.

One alternative is pay for YT premium, but they still might target you with ads[1] which is risable. I've heard FreeTube is a thing as well.

They gave GTA2 away for free officially at some point, which might have reduced a desire for it. That's my only guess.
Re:Most promoted and blocked domains among Kagi Search users on Saturday August 05, 2023 @06:34AM (#37010722)
I might be misremembering, but I seem to recall geeksforgeeks being ok a few years ago. But I've started avoiding it because it seems like there's multiple nag screens in a row whenever I make the mistake of clicking. Seems a lot of people agree.

Is the issue here these sites aren't putting up the barriers to the crawlers, and are getting high ranking in all the results despite all the friction to normal users? It'd be nice if there were a way for a search engines to tell if paywalls / nag screens are a thing on sites and to demote them from the results accordingly.

It seems like it wouldn't be hard for them to tell, but maybe they don't want to de-rank sites with these patterns. But really, from the consumers' perspective, who wants these sites in the results? I'm all for subscribing to something if I use it repeatedly, but that doesn't describe 90% of the sites I visit and I don't have the money for 1000 subscriptions.

Maybe they could just have a filter to filter for free sites only. I don't know what the solution is, but having blocked domains while nice is just a band-aid.

Re:Movie-Theater Behavior Has Gone Off the Reels on Friday August 04, 2023 @07:25AM (#36998424)
It's been a problem since smartphones became widespread and people got addicted to them. And quite frankly the theater workers don't get paid enough to enforce the rules.

Just one of many reasons going to movies isn't really worth it anymore, unless you're really in the mindset you want to go and having lights shining / jostling around in your peripheral vision won't annoy you.

If you aren't averse to using a third party package, on my personal projects I always found https://github.com/docopt/docopt to be nice.

You can kill 2 birds with one stone by documenting your scripts while also providing the argument structure / parsing.

They all appear to be used. Bummer.
Out of curiosity, what did you do to work with (or around) said people? I guess your penultimate sentence implies you moved on.
Avast was caught massively spying on their users in their browser extension and anti-virus apps just a few years ago, check out their wikipedia page.
A bit of that, and the fact Avast got caught just a few years ago massively spying on all their users and selling their data both in their browser extension and free anti-virus apps.
Re:What happened with Asus routers this morning? on Thursday May 18, 2023 @02:46AM (#35984776)
Depends on your needs of course. If you want something cheap that can handle moderate usage in a house, I had pretty good luck with https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/e8450 recently (the Belkin one was much cheaper than the Linksys brand one, for whatever reason).

No problems so far at all after 4 months.

> As I get older I find myself valuing locality of behavior over most other concerns.

I absolutely agree, that's a big one for me as well and when I'm designing new features it's always a high priority.
