Re:Samsung installs keylogger on its laptop computers on Wednesday March 30, 2011 @10:54PM (#2390230)
Yea, some colleagues of mine thought that installing a fresh OS on their laptop would "break" it. The software engineering workforce has its range of very good and very bad employees.
Re:Pipe: Infix syntax for Python on Tuesday March 29, 2011 @02:02PM (#2383672)
Thats great, now if they added some of the other lisp features (macros, etc.) I'd consider using python.
Re:(Android) Developer Income Report #8 on Monday March 28, 2011 @01:30PM (#2379196)
Not really. Apparently you ate not aware that paid apps are not available in Poland. Kind of hard to make a great product when you cab only make money off ads.
Re:Firefox 4 is here on Tuesday March 22, 2011 @01:17PM (#2355311)
Seems like all my previous addons that were used to improve firefox UI have been incorporated into 4.0. Very glad that Vimperator works, the main reason I use firefox. I wouldn't have upgraded if it did not.
Even if a judge is appointed, there could still be public outrage over the perception of low conviction rates. This would cause another judge to be appointed. The same thing goes on with cabinet positions of all levels of government where the public demonstrates outrage.
Re:XOR Swap - Stack Overflow for Tech Interview Questions on Monday March 21, 2011 @01:55PM (#2350811)
What is the 'mutable' keyword do

Do people actually ask this. I can't understand if it should be, "What the the mutable keyboard 'do'". I'm not sure of any mutable keywords by the name of "do". Or did you mean "What does the 'mutable' keyword do". Again, I'm not familiar with any popular programming languages with the keyword mutable. If they are just asking for the definition of mutability, that seems a strange question for a technical interview.

From my experience most of these interviews at these big tech companies have these kind of questions. And they suffer from having inexperienced engineers conducting the interviews. I think this is a big, untalked about problem with regard to why tech companies have such a lack of talent.

The point is when people talking about breaking DRM, they aren't necessarily doing something illegal. There are a lot of legitimate reasons for breaking DRM that don't violate the law. It would be completely ridiculous for stack overflow to ban discussion on this topic altogether.
Re:Entreporn, The Fallacy That Wastes Your Life on Friday March 18, 2011 @04:08AM (#2339755)
I'm skeptical about the statement that you quoted. I don't really have the facts to back up my assertion, but I believe we will always have large companies.

If the comment is meant to mean that if everyone had the entrepreneurial drive the whole house of cards would crumble down, I still think that is misguided. The distribution of the success of businesses is somewhat similar to the distribution of programming skill among developers. There are many that are in the low mid range. There are very few that are light years ahead of 90% of the other developers.

Re:Don't distract new programmers with OOP on Thursday March 17, 2011 @12:49PM (#2336837)
Pretty much all recent functional languages deal with oo programming by using multimethods and namespaces. This takes care of the problem you're talking about in a beyer way than most oo languages.

Re:Steve Jobs explains ban on Flash on Monday March 07, 2011 @11:32AM (#2297617)
Wow. This is pretty funny considering how old the news is that this article is about.
Re:How to become an Android developer? on Monday March 07, 2011 @11:13AM (#2297550)
Yea. This article could have been written about any web store without needing to change much of the content within it.
Re:Everyone thinks they're hiring the top 1% (2005) on Thursday March 03, 2011 @02:01PM (#2285276)
There are some real smart people that don't have business savvy or street smarts. Its easy to get locked into a big dumb corporation that doesn't recognize talent. You could spend a long time in a place like that and not realize your potential. After all, most kids still go through college and work at "safe" jobs.
Re:Everyone thinks they're hiring the top 1% (2005) on Thursday March 03, 2011 @01:58PM (#2285265)
This phenomenon isn't something only present in tech companies. I think the stat was, the congressional approval rating floats between 10-20% while the reelection rate floats around 80-90%. Humans have evolved to trust those fewer edges separating them in their social graph more than those with more edges.

Re:2000 as Seen in 1910 (23 pics) on Monday February 28, 2011 @12:44PM (#2272039)
Glad I didn't live in that future. As has been said by others, predictions of the future often tell you more about the society making the prediction than what will actually come to pass.
Re:How to build your own "Watson Jr." in your basement on Thursday February 24, 2011 @12:14AM (#2257011)
This article doesn't really tell you how to build a "Watson Jr." as they call it. It just tells you to use OpenNLP and UIMA (which is unnecessary, but understandable why its advocated since IBM created it).

I was kind of hoping that there would be a deeper dive into how the data was being stored and retrieved. I'm also interested in the Machine Learning side of it. They don't really give any hints at that as well.

Re:Torrent meta-search engine on Wednesday February 23, 2011 @01:41PM (#2255195)
Yea, usually these meta torrent sites act kind of like a massage parlor. You pay for the massage and any negotiations between you and the masseur have nothing to do with the parlor.

Hopefully some of these torrent sites can have a better UI like this place. It really has a lot of bite. I like it.

Re:A Visitor's Guide to Silicon Valley on Tuesday February 22, 2011 @02:31PM (#2251159)
Don't think I ever had a decent burrito since I moved up here. I'm spoiled since I used to live in SoCal. I agree about the Vietnamese food and the sushi.
Re:Show HN: Our new $149 hackable Bluetooth wristwatch on Tuesday February 15, 2011 @03:10PM (#2223038)
I don't really see the point of having a watch nowadays. I usually just look at my phone for the time. This watch seems to do some of the stuff a standard smartphone does, but is more limited. At this point in my life, I'm trying to do what I can to limit the number of various gadgets I carry around on my person. I would rather have a small little device that does everything pretty well, than 50 devices I have to lug around that do everything perfect.

In a sense its similar to using your computer instead of a television. You can access more interesting internet videos online, and usually don't have to watch commercials because of ad blocking software. You can play video games on your computer instead of using a console. Your computer could hook up to a projector or HD Television as needed. You can read books on your computer. You can call people on your computer. You can IM/Email/Facebook on your computer. I think the future will be far fewer devices that can do a whole lot more. This watch seems like a step into the past.

I never heard of this site until now. Its a great idea. I really wish I thought of this. Not only is it a fun project, but it has the potential to be used by a great many people. I wish the Greplin guys luck with this.
Re:Nokia’s Suicide Note on Friday February 11, 2011 @01:42PM (#2207595)
I agree. I keep hearing comments about Nokia being late to the game... blalballba ...if they decided to use android instead of WP7. I don't see how that is an issue. As has been stated by Nokia, this is going to take 1-2 years to make the switch to WP7. Why don't they spend 1/2 of that time switching to a popular platform instead of an unpopular platform. I guess I'd have to be an ex Microsoft employee (like the CEO) to understand any of this zaniness.
I've been watching the blendtuts videos. My game only uses basic models since I want to support older generation handsets, so I'm not making use of any of the advanced blender features. But, it has been well worth the effort learning Blender. Its really a great tool.
I've been using blender for models in the android game I'm making. Don't see a reason to spend $ 40 when there is a fantastic open source alternative. Kind of like buying windows server instead off just using linux.
Re:Meat-Eating Furniture on Monday February 07, 2011 @10:55PM (#2191855)
I'm hoping they make one that eats humans. That would be a fine piece of furniture to put on my mantle. I wonder if you were to breed organisms, would they be able to produce a plentiful amount of energy for our electrical grids. I'm not necessarily talking about humans. It may make sense to breed dogs or rats, whatever gives the best bang for the buck.
Re:Android Patterns on Monday February 07, 2011 @12:46PM (#2189871)
I never really had a problem with the universal back button. The app development on Android is very similar to web development. I'm used to using the back button often on my browser, it seems only natural to do it on my phone as well.
Re:Why you don't have any Gingerbread on Monday February 07, 2011 @12:41PM (#2189857)
Surprised this didn't get ranked higher. This is kind of big news, especially since there are more android handsets than iphones nowadays.
Re:Facebook.com is now the internet on Monday February 07, 2011 @12:37PM (#2189837)
Companies that put up facebook pages are just doing it because its easy and there is no cost associated with it. Nobody is depending on it and nobody will care much about it when the next big platform comes along.
Re:Dr Dobbs - The Rise And Fall of Languages in 2010 on Sunday February 06, 2011 @08:43PM (#2187144)
That seems to be the main problems with these metrics. They aren't looking at the popular libraries that make use of the language. If I search "Android OpenGL development" it should count as a query directed at Java. This survey doesn't seem to do that though.
This kind of reminds me of the Fear - Love spectrum in Donnie Darko. I don't want to be a charlatan, martyr, or hustler. The world really isn't that simple. And if you want to know where you can put your spectrum, see the movie and find out.
