Consumers will avoid AI art like they avoid fossil fuels and sweatshop merchandise?
Re:Show HN: Giving Opus 5.5 a simulated paint canvas on Friday October 02, 2026 @02:10PM (#49936681)
You learn something new every day! thanks
Re:Show HN: Giving Opus 5.5 a simulated paint canvas on Friday October 02, 2026 @02:08PM (#49936662)
I haven't thought as deeply as you about the ethics of it all. I only meant with my comment if I see art I expect it to be human and thats why I value it. If you churn it out with AI I feel hoodwinked into valueing something worthless.

But I am learning towards a lot of your points about how another mind is being created. I still am very uncomfortable with the implications that something digital is Actually Learning. These deep learning networks seem to need 100,000x more examples than a human to learn but once they get to human level they can learn just like us. That a bunch of linear algebra can play chess or make art brings up many questions about what exactly human consciousness is. If consciousness isn't the ability to do any of those activities, then what is it for? I might have to become religious and believe in a soul because I'm not sure I can handle the idea that I'm just a clump of neurons. But then again you have to look at reality in the face.

Re:Show HN: Giving Opus 5.5 a simulated paint canvas on Friday October 02, 2026 @01:57PM (#49936521)
Well the LLMs are much bigger than diffusion models so I think that's the bitter lesson. You could scale compute for diffusion models though.
Re:Show HN: Giving Opus 5.5 a simulated paint canvas on Friday October 02, 2026 @01:30PM (#49936165)
It’s interesting how diffusion models are getting bitter lessened by LLMs. I suspect anthropic has tens of thousands of RL environments recreating famous paintings with code because it was anthropic employees who first started posting about these capabilities on X.

Opus is also getting decent pixel art. I have ran some experiments with Opus 5.5 to turn 90s pinball displays (black and white pixel art) into double resolution colored remastered pixels.

https://files.catbox.moe/tbx2u7.png

I prompted it a lot but didn’t draw any pixels. Seems to be bad at hands still. I think a skilled pixel artist could greatly speed up their work with Claude code.

It also makes me sad for artists. They didn’t get paid much anyway. Art should be something human to human like writing text. Although, most large commercial art products (marvel movies) already lack any human to human connection you see in paintings or indie games. The large commercial art products will be 50% AI soon.

Re:Grok 4.7 on Monday September 21, 2026 @02:24PM (#49791240)
I'll have to try Gemini Flash for coding. The reason I haven't I used Gemini for coding is last time I tried it couldn't call tools very well.

I am a huge fan of Gemini Pro for chat... gemini somehow just knows the most obscure stuff. I'll double check something Gemini said and find the source is deep inside a hard to access scientific paper. Google just has the best index of the internet.

Re:Grok 4.7 on Monday September 21, 2026 @01:00PM (#49789980)
If they fix Claudish, they've earned me back as a max customer!

Fable 5.1 is not there quite there yet.

They need to get that Sonnet 3.5 magic back.

Re:Grok 4.7 on Monday September 21, 2026 @12:14PM (#49789234)
Apparently Grok 4.7 has 40% more weights than Grok 4.6, but the price ($6 output token, $2 input) is the same.

Given that the decrease in their margin and the fact they delayed the release of Grok 4.7 almost two weeks past the original date, XAI must not have been happy with the results for 4.7. And XAI also waited the day before Opus 5.5 is rumored to launch. I imagine OPus 5.5 will blow Grok 4.7 out of the water benchmark wise.

However, I have become skeptical of benchmarks. Grok 4.5 solved some issues setting up a buildroot system that Fable 5 couldn't do. I find the post cursor groks are phenomenal at frontend web development, though Claude is much better at backend ruby.

My favorite part of the new Groks has been how they speak in plain english. I simply cannot stand Claudish or Gptism. GPT is almost as bad as claude sometimes with how it likes to use big words in confusing explanations. Still, nothing beats Claude 3.5 and 4 with explaining since it seems all models have regressed. I wonder if Grok 4.7 will also regress with English because of all the RL.

To be clear I do not endorse this opinion I am just answering the “what can be done” question.
Make it international law and bomb anyone who doesn’t comply
Re:Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root on Monday August 31, 2026 @08:21PM (#49516458)
His tone is horrible. Because he implies untrue things while being 100% certain. He will paint entire communities as against omarchy when it’s just a couple left wing members with a stupid take. It doesn’t help the distribution is just … not that good.
Re:Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root on Monday August 31, 2026 @08:16PM (#49516421)
Like what???? I don’t revolt at anything pre-installed on fedora.

And arch Linux specifically ships with nothing!

6GB is 3x larger than most other distros. It is kind of mental.

Re:Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root on Monday August 31, 2026 @08:13PM (#49516402)
Have you… used any other Linux distributions at all? For longer than a month? Respectfully. The thing DHH killed was demoing Omarchy most stuff is in other distros out of the box. And like installing in a couple minutes is table stakes.
Re:Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root on Monday August 31, 2026 @08:07PM (#49516359)
I guess I love highly opinionated stuff only if I agree with those opinions.
Re:Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root on Sunday August 30, 2026 @07:39PM (#49503931)
That’s awesome! Everyone has different tastes. Personally I love GNOME because it’s extremely productive and works out of the box.
Re:Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root on Sunday August 30, 2026 @06:47PM (#49503593)
Omarchy has me questioning liking Rails because it just… straight up sucks?

It comes preloaded with friggen ZOOM. I don’t think Windows bloat is that bad.

If it makes people happy it makes people happy I guess. These guys trying it would be even more amazed at Fedora Workstation (“you can press windows and it shows all your open windows? That’s so much better”)

Maybe because the other way to get Caffine is in drinks full of corn syrup.
Re:Grok 4.6 on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @08:04PM (#49280206)
I feel like I’m im a different universe than you… 4.5 is one of my favorite models of all time.

Fast, speaks normally. Was able to figure out many issues Claude couldn’t. I thought code readability was a worse than Claude but I could just tell it how I wanted stuff written anyway.

What do you use it for? I’m genuinely curious. I’m also using it in cursor

Re:Grok 4.6 on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @08:00PM (#49280174)
Cursor is very generous atm, you get a ton of Grok usage and then your monthly subscription cost in api pricing for Claude and GTP.
Re:The AI Apocalypse Is Here on Saturday August 08, 2026 @10:29PM (#49227858)
They and their kin would be the highest status humans ever to exist. Duh.
Re:AI migrated legacy COBOL programs to Java, bugs included on Tuesday August 04, 2026 @09:05PM (#49177370)
I have been translating Motorola 6809 assembly into C. It is not that bad. I don’t find AI saves me much time writing the code because understanding it is still the bottleneck, but man it is good at explaining stuff.
Did you even watch the video? Purpose fit algorithms outperform is quite literally the OPPOSITE of Suttons argument. This is the man who wrote this:

“The biggest lesson that can be read from 70 years of AI research is that general methods that leverage computation are ultimately the most effective, and by a large margin.”

His problem with LLMs are they aren’t general enough… In fact his essay the bitter lesson was what inspired the current LLM scaling.

If you watched the video, you can even see the part where he talks about how AI will fully replace humans as the next stage of life. How wholesome!

Re:Stripe in talks to buy OpenRouter for about $10B on Thursday July 23, 2026 @10:30PM (#49030607)
Makes a lot of sense. If Stripe owned openrouter, they could ditch the 5% fee on top of tokens and make money from Stripes credit card fees.
Re:The Boeing 747 Begins Its Final Descent on Sunday June 28, 2026 @02:36PM (#48710125)
Didn’t read the full article but it starts with

> The jet was perhaps the pinnacle of American engineering excellence. Its retirement signals an end to an era of American culture—and ambition.

End of American ambition? SpaceX landing is rockets… today! That’s apples to apples also, both aerospace. In other fields we have literally taught computers how to talk.

Re:Zen and the Art of Machine Learning Research on Saturday June 20, 2026 @03:00PM (#48611923)
I only read Meditations. So yes, if he is not representative of the philosophy I have bastardized it.

Although, I am convinced Marcus Aurelius used Stoicism as a tool to control his emotions. Meditations reminded me of cognitive behavioral therapy. Repetitive soothing phrases to induce equanimity.

Re:Zen and the Art of Machine Learning Research on Friday June 19, 2026 @11:55AM (#48600018)
Stoicism in Ancient Rome was COMPLETELY about controlling your emotions, though. And in Greece it was never that big of a deal. The stoics we remember today are all Roman. Marcus Aurelius, Epicurious, Seneca.

Meditations is largely Marcus Aurelius soothing himself with logical arguments.

Im not doing it full justice but the passages read like “A whole is not less than its parts, Humans are intelligent, therefore the universe is intelligent, there for my situation is a logical plan from the universe, so I should be content.” Marcus was explaining why he needed to be the perfect elite Roman citizen, using nature to logically show why he needed to embody societally cherished traits like being logical, just, fair, but also being stern, powerful and strong. Over and over again.

Now at the time, they did consider it a hard science. They were trying to figure out secrets of the universe, the absolute correct ethics, and therapy (controlling your emotions) at the same time. Each tenet relied on eachother, you couldn’t have one with the other. Today we know the science was wrong and ethics are more complicated than they could’ve imagined, but the controlling emotions side remains. So I completely disagree that modern stoic bros are bastardizing it, it just is an flawed ideology that matches well with some of our modern western traits of a “masculine” man.

Re:Cohere's First Model for Developers on Monday June 15, 2026 @11:53PM (#48550391)
I was a fan of coheres general purpose LLM. Command A I think? Before they came out with their reasoning model.

More competition is better.

I love the design. Clean and refreshing - you start at the left and every sub element goes to the right. Like a file browser. And the commit screen is dense but super readable. I would move the summary column from the right of the README to the left of the README on the /home screen (and call /home the /README).

Loading files is very slow but I assume that's because HN is hammering the server.

I am not a believer in negative advertising. So I don't give a poop you are anti-ai. Or "better" than Github (better for who??). Just imply you are a code forge thats made for serious developers who need something engineered to be fast and reliable.

I wish you the best of luck, I can see Linear coming out with git repos after coming out with a diff reader. I have a suspicion there's space for many code forges in the market as you build out more features, especially if you lean into your products hacker-y-ness
