Way to miss the point!...all of them! Nobody said anything about manually installed packages being unsegregated or immutable, so let's not put up any more straw men. It's just a stupid way to work.

I think you may be the one without admin skills if you think working on your system Python is anything except reckless. No one cares that you have 20 years of doing it like that, it's a poor argument and shows up a really bad attitude.

Re:My Python Development Environment, 2018 Edition on Friday February 23, 2018 @04:42PM (#16449877)
Or you don't want to hose your system python, or you don't want to shit all over any other work you may be doing, or you want to ever test on anything other than a single (probably polluted if you're screwing around using your system python for everything) environment, or you're a professional using python, or if you want to be taken at all seriously....the list goes on! And yeah, using your system python means you're either not doing any professional/serious work or you're a hack who needs to stop doing anything professionally/seriously.
Re:Why It’s So Hard to Actually Work in Shared Offices on Wednesday February 21, 2018 @07:41PM (#16434259)
If you want to think like that, so do morning coffees, someone eating chicken for lunch and someone on a diet! Seriously, some adult thinking needs to be in place. I know several people with alcohol problems, devout Muslims and an abuse victim. Here's a hint, other people drinking isn't a problem for them. That's a part of life and they're mature enough to accept it. Sounds like the person you're replying to has plenty of inclusiveness, no reason to stop everyone elses enjoyment for the sake of the possibility that someone's not matured enough to accept it.
> I want the most up to date data possible so no caching

This seriously doesn't mean "no caching" and shows a real lack of understanding about caching.

You state that people should so what is appropriate for use case, though your other comments here go completely against that and are cargo cultist in the extreme. I think perhaps, when you say "should do what is appropriate for your use case" you actually just mean "what I think you should do".

Re:Apology after Japanese train departs 20 seconds early on Thursday November 16, 2017 @01:05PM (#15714917)
you joke, but the train I get everyday into London is only on time if I'm a minute late. Otherwise it's pretty much always 2-10 minutes behind schedule.

Oddly enough, I tend to do that as well. Though that's more through social anxiety than wanting to be exactly on time (I don't want to be late but I don't want to make the meeting host feel awkward either).
Re:Show HN: Dramatiq – An alternative to Celery on Monday November 13, 2017 @06:59AM (#15685846)
No offense, but this sounds a lot like "I can't be bothered to learn about the tech but I want to put it on my CV anyway".

The "95%" of use cases probably don't need a message broker at all. Far too many "modern webapp" developers are shoving message brokers into websites so they can pretend to be more important and sophisticated than they are. If you're not even willing to learn how to connect to RabbitMQ, or any broker, without a big giant messy crutch, I'd suggest you shouldn't use them at all.

Re:Ask HN: What do you care about the most in a tech job post? on Saturday October 14, 2017 @05:48PM (#15474516)
This has to be one of the childish and laziest things I've read in a long time. Seriously, who can't spend 10 minutes writing up a cover letter? If you can't even manage that, how the hell are you going to do your job properly? You're not!

Job hunting works both ways. If the company has put in the time to write up a decent enough job listing to make you interested, then you damn well do your side and don't waste their time (yes, this may be a shock to you, but sending a crappy email without a cover letter wastes someones elses time).

Re:Uber London loses licence to operate on Tuesday September 26, 2017 @12:51PM (#15340404)
Yet no-one's managed to come up with evidence of it being false. Perhaps less knee jerk "I can't believe that!" and more checking facts before discounting comments
Re:Uber London loses licence to operate on Friday September 22, 2017 @07:51AM (#15311282)
Did you read the comment you replied to?

It specifically says that people who miss the last train get cabs. So yeah, you've not really disputed anything they said. You like to get Uber? That's nice for you. I just use my local minicab company as they're almost as cheap and way more reliable. The price difference is only massive if you're silly enough to ask a black cab to take you 20 miles. Otherwise it's not really that much, nevermind "massive".

Also, if you're spending lots on public transport, just get a damn travel card. Transport's only expensive for tourists buying each on every journey. Londoners know how to keep their costs down, which makes me wonder if you're a tourist or business traveller who doesn't actually live here.
