Good point
Re:We stopped roadmap work for a week and fixed 189 bugs on Monday November 24, 2025 @10:06AM (#46034908)
We had a quarter, where each Monday we spent most of the day fixing bugs. It greatly improved the product.
Re:Discovery Coding on Wednesday January 29, 2025 @09:52AM (#42865525)
It took me 10+ years to realizing I’m the opposite of a discovery coder. I’m much more efficient with thinking through the problem with pen and paper before even touching the keyboard.
Re:Programming as Theory Building [pdf] on Tuesday January 07, 2025 @07:07AM (#42621578)
Thank you! I just listened to this episode and the added context of ”Ryle's notion of theory” was a great contribution to understanding this paper better.
Re:Omakub – Opinionated Ubuntu Setup on Monday June 10, 2024 @01:34AM (#40630503)
If this can help people switch to Linux it’s a good thing.
I still have this 90s' feeling that the internet connects me to the world, news, science and culture. I really miss it when I don't have it. But I never use social media, so maybe that's why I'm so positive.
Re:Neal Stephenson – Announcing Polostan on Tuesday April 30, 2024 @03:14PM (#40215022)
I hope it’s more than a historical fiction person portrait. Reading the summary I’m not convinced… yet.
Re:Crafting Interpreters: 640 Pages in 15 Months on Sunday April 28, 2024 @05:39AM (#40187298)
I have this Book sitting on my bookshelf. It will be my next interpreter book after “Writing an interpreter in Go” - it’s only ~200pages and I really like it.
Re:My 25-Year Engineering Career Retrospective on Saturday April 20, 2024 @06:37AM (#40096286)
As many others have pointed out, “sleep as much as you need”, my brain is on a completely different level after a good night’s sleep - especially after having kids.
Re:Htmx and the Rule of Least Power on Saturday April 13, 2024 @03:51AM (#40021325)
Finally an article I can reference when explaining my problems with the “modern” frontend stack.
This reminds me of my first real dev job, 10y ago, making small facebook games with https://phaser.io it was actually kind of fun now that I think back.
Re:Ask HN: Who else is working on nothing? on Saturday January 13, 2024 @03:15PM (#38984084)
Hope you are doing okay, stay strong.
Im currently taking this course without having the book and it works great. I might buy the book later but for me it’s important to have the imposed weekly deadlines in order to not just drift away and do something else instead.
As a non-native English speaker, Austers’ “The New York Trilogy” got me into reading (and enjoying) English books in high school.
Re:OpenAI announces leadership transition on Saturday November 18, 2023 @02:23AM (#38316511)
Bravely done by the board - it shows that they are actually trying to build something like AGI and not just talking the talk.
Re:Immanuel Kant–What can we know? on Monday November 06, 2023 @01:45AM (#38159564)
This blog post was perfect, It reminded me of why I'm so fascinated about philosophy of mind - brings back memory's of reading about it in university, back when I had time for this sort of thinking.
Re:Ubuntu Linux snuck into high-end Dell laptops on Sunday October 22, 2023 @04:22PM (#37978746)
I’ve been running Ubuntu on a Dell Latitude for about two years. Works good and is cheaper.
Asking yourself: “Is the abstraction I’m using optimal for what I’m currently doing or could another type of abstraction be even better?”

Forces you to at least admit to yourself that you probably lack a lot of knowledge. Makes you humble and hopefully qurious.

Re:Ways YC has changed in the last year on Sunday September 24, 2023 @01:10PM (#37634983)
The way Twitter has changed in the last year is so I can no longer read threads since I don’t have an account.
Re:Percy Ludgate on Saturday September 16, 2023 @07:32AM (#37533869)
Working a day job and then spending your nights working on an engineering project (like Ludgate did) will always be the most inspiring part for me.
Re:Linear code is more readable on Friday September 15, 2023 @03:02AM (#37519500)
Testability matters more than readability - please separate different parts into different functions!
If 3, And The are truly advanced we should consider not communicating with them. Maybe they are hiding from someone else... ;) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_forest_hypothesis
Re:Death by a Thousand Microservices on Tuesday September 12, 2023 @02:16AM (#37477432)
Been working for 6 month at a company with ~150 engineers that uses Microservices.

As a simple software engineer I love it, It allowed me to easily get right in to parts of the system and conceptually understand the boundaries between different systems and business unites.

But it sure adds complexity - complexity that I fortunately do not need to deal with... Yet.

Re:GIL removal and the Faster CPython project on Friday August 18, 2023 @05:53AM (#37173429)
The best way to remove the GIL completely is switching language to Go, unfortunately this is not always possible.
Re:Python: Just Write SQL on Monday August 14, 2023 @06:22AM (#37119364)
An ORM makes sense if you need to make very dynamic SQL queries, ie advanced logic at runtime.

If your app can work well with static queries then you should not add an ORM.

You only hear about folks praising mindfulness, this is an interesting observation.
Would fit nicely in a hotel lobby.
I think having a lot of money but being anonymous and not caring about what people think of you - would actually give you “high status” in a lot of groups. :p
An interesting observation!
Re:Albert Camus on Wednesday May 31, 2023 @02:08AM (#36135056)
I just want to highlight that a lot of traditional western philosophers have a blind spot where they are trying to make sense of the world from an individuals perspective… and I want to make the case that maybe meaning can not be invented for each individual but derived from looking at humanity as a whole from an evolutionary biologist perspective. At least That would be a more modern and scientific approach to understanding concepts like consciousness.

Although I’m happy to be wrong.
