Yes, well, he named MySQL after a daughter called My, too.

Yeah, I can actually agree on that. I think there's a few times where I've registered and jumped through hoops only to find that, no indeed, "we do not ship outside of the USA"

This deal is about ebooks, so I figure shipping would be whatever your isp charges you for traffic in this particular case.

My computer club has used nginx since it first came out in 2004. We also had a bit of contact with Igor to get it running on Solaris. Since then it has been a very reliable piece of web infrastructure for us, and I wish Igor and the rest of the team the best of luck. I have high hopes that really great things will come out of this.

He has accepted an order of summary punishment, so at most it'll be a fine. It might not even be that, depending on how serious the prosecution will see it.

Technically, it's only everyone but GNU that (re)distributes emacs with the generated code that violate GPL, so you are correct in not calling that particular part a problem.

He is still a man with great ideas, and an amazing ability to hype them. But yes, they get overhyped. Black & White sounded a lot more awesome than it turned out to be when released (still a good game, though, but nowhere near as epic as we'd all heard). Fable was, in essence, the same thing. The Movies, I feel, isn't much of a game, but curtains for the movie making thing (which worked nice), but by that time I had figured out the hype machine and expected less. Lionhead makes solid games overall, but it amazes me how the gaming magazines and sites swallow everything Molyneux says hook, line and sinker.
And now I want to play Populous II again. :/

If having your password on a note is good enough for Schneier ( http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2005/06/write_down_you... ), it's good enough for me. For pretty much the same reason. If you're going to even use a password, it should be a good one. And if it's a good one, you aren't very likely to be able to memorize it.

Wouldn't a OTP scheme like OPIE be able to do this decently? My own computers do not permit root login via ssh, but still it'd be more or less a trivial matter to set up a local account for your "SSH buddy", and then over the phone give him the next OTP in sequence for the root account or so for a successful su - -c halt.

Re:Spotify bitrategate: 320kbps premium quality not there yet

Eh, my stereo equipment didn't cost anywhere near ten grand, but I wager it can still show the difference between 160 and 320 kilobits of compressed music. From what I gathered from the op, though, it's not so much about the practical difference than the fact that he feels he's paying for something he's not actually getting - and that's something that is fair to complain about.

Well, for example, an ncurses interface would be nice. That way I wouldn't need to use NX or other RDP software if I wanted to use spotify from my jukebox computer.

It is indeed a decent service, and I guess it was worth the money I've paid for it, but there certainly are a bunch of flaws. I miss a lot of my personal music library in it, for example, (and yes, while you can add them, but I pretty much only use/used spotify at work). To be honest, I didn't even remember to enable the HQ option when I had a paid subscription. I also use it on gnu/linux, where the windows client under wine for me is very sluggish (but only at work, not at home), and the native client still has ways to go.
Anyway, I seem to have gotten quite sidetracked, the point I was trying to make is that at least OP is giving them direct feedback and thus an opportunity to improve. While you think it's a great service, surely you can find some ways to improve it? I could, for example, live with a larger cache on the android app so that I can enter a store under ground without the music stopping when the cell service does...

There's also the so-called "MP3 effect", where people start to think that compressed crap is better than the lossless option.
Re:How much GNU is there in GNU/Linux?

I think it makes more sense than ever to call the operating system "Other" instead.
"So, what OS are you running?" "Debian Other on the laptop, Ubuntu Other at work"
This would also make the usage polls more relevant. You usually have "Windows", "OS X" and "Other" in the results already.

Quite true. A movement like the free software one needs people who are not willing to barter with their ideals. I for one do not agree with RMS on everything, and I do still use a few proprietary pieces of software, but I do appreciate the fact that RMS is who he is.

Well, from what I've skimmed in the emacs-devel list, there's some talk of putting guile in there, so that'd at least open up for scheme, and I guess javascript, or whatever it is that guile currently supports. This'd probably solve things like bignum support and so on too, I guess. I doubt we'd see this even in emacs25, though, but, still...
