after 30y of this business, i’m dumbfounded we haven’t organized. doctors, lawyers, plumbers etc seem to benefit hugely from professional orgs and unions in their corner.

i guess we are too well paid.

(all of the above make more than you do, and it’s because they are organized)

Re:CERN gears up to ship antimatter across Europe on Thursday May 22, 2025 @09:14AM (#44061733)
what i saw of cern was a beautiful campus with ongoing cricket matches on the lawn, lots of offices and computers, and a great cafeteria.

my brother worked down the hall from tbl, and we stopped by, but he was out. brother’s boss (mdm wu, of quark fame), was out of town too.

brother was the vms admin, and would bitterly complain that mdm wu never cleaned out her mail spool, and it was now a ruinous 40mb.

st genis is quaint and nice to visit, with views of mt blanc.

no, wood is not a carbon sink. its gets turned back into co2 as it decomposes.
creosote railroad ties are commonly found in landscaping around here. unfortunately, they are hazardous waste, thusly getting rid of them is a bit of a hassle.
I've seen this video, he did a pretty good job, but his chemical treatment didn't penetrate at all. I suspect he would have benefitted from pressure cooker during that step. this is how treated lumber is treated to get full penetration of whatever chemicals they use.

given the depth the of the penetration, he basically case hardened it. you can see in the bullet tests that the interior laminations are much fatter than the exterior layers.

I really wish Nvidia had gone in this direction instead of gstreamer :/

this is a police problem. as usual.
read an interesting take that North American bison are (were) an invasive species from europe that wound up in NA by crossing some land-bridge at some point in prehistory.

Some people may not be aware that the Maytag family makes excellent cheese, or did, not sure if they own it anymore.

My Bosch dryer breaks its cheap nylon door latch every 2 years. the replacement costs $25, and could be 3d printed, or punched out of metal in about 10 minutes. once the electronics break, I'm just burning down the house and moving to the woods.

my school district has been short 2-300 teachers ALL YEAR. my kid didn't have a math teacher for the first few months, then got one, who proceeded to quit a few weeks later. now math class is watching YouTube videos about math. or it would be, but the district just went remote...

oh, and musk was fired for incompetence, and all his code thrown away after the x.com acquisition. he also isn't the founder of Tesla. basically everything "everyone knows" about Elon "monorail" Musk, is a lie.

it's a shame the video game isn't very fun to play at all too.
Re:My Tungsten Cube (2019) on Thursday August 26, 2021 @09:52PM (#28323451)
I too have owned a tungsten rod for the same reasons. it's very nearly exactly the same density as gold, but cheaper.

heh, I worked a the schaumburg HQ in the mid 90s. We had awful problems getting java applets to print cellphone invoices in a ms/sun compatible way. Many thanks to the anonymous coworker who taught me the dot operation in vi there.

Having seen it first hand, the vast majority of those 20 million people are living check to check. even missing a few shifts puts them on the brink of homelessness. this is going to be very, very bad.
The "removed a rib" thing was started by Gabriele D’Annunzio, father of Italian fascism. Most likely untrue, but a rumor also most likely to be spread by its subject.

Re:What Happened with Lego on Saturday February 22, 2020 @12:52PM (#22392268)
neither of my kids have any interest in lego. not for lack of trying, they have several 10's of thousands of bricks, and enjoy the movies. I think it might be because they have zero interest in the licensed properties they promote.

I started lego in the mid 70s with my brother's Apollo lunar lander kits (pre-minifig), and enjoyed the heyday of the early 80's space ship kits.

the lego city line is very enjoyable to me as an adult, and has very few "special" parts.

might want to think about a different name. https://www.kaseya.com
