With all the love and respect in the world, who do you think you're talking about? Emmet Shear is not trans to my knowledge, (nor, I suspect, his knowledge). If you think this was about Mira Murati, you should really get up to date before telling people off about pronouns.

Re:Reimagining Chess with AlphaZero on Monday January 31, 2022 @08:21AM (#30147588)
That's a funny idea, but I can't imagine you get past the point of having 4-5 sequential moves without finding a forced mate?
We have that in Sweden too. As an expat it's a complete nightmare for me from day one. Getting my bank to successfully issue it was impossible.

First, in the days before mobile bank-id, they sent windows-only hardware as I recall. Then came the days of letters/cards/hardware getting lost in the mail.

I gave up on it in the end. I have multiple things (banking-wise) I no longer have online access to because of it.

If you're going to make one system to rule them all you need to make sure the logistics actually work.

Re:Do Not Log on Wednesday January 05, 2022 @11:32AM (#29811099)
That's a wonderful theory.

I have a third party which returns errors ~20% of the time outside of working hours (yes, really).

1. Exceptions should be sent to sentry. 2. Exceptions should not be normal. 3. Do not log.

Solve for ability to review & debug after the fact.

Re:Pumps run dry at gas stations in Britain on Monday September 27, 2021 @10:16AM (#28670903)
It's not unlike the panic buying at the start of the pandemic. The media is driving this hysteria because a) it fits their narrative around brexit, and b) fear & outrage sells.
Re:Stockfish 14 on Monday July 05, 2021 @09:44AM (#27737913)
I don't disagree with what you said, but for context: when these players do speedruns they typically start from 600 ELO and work their way back up to GM, so they face players at every level as part of that 100-game streak.

Re:Starting a crypto project on Thursday May 06, 2021 @10:13AM (#27063502)
The tokens issued in this case (on of the few) have a purpose which is not speculation. If large amounts of speculation is undermining the business itself then yes I think that might qualify as a form of abuse? Happy to use an alternative term of your choice, ESL etc.

> Investors only care about getting more press releases out so they can pump up the price of their discounted tokens, which have a shortened lockup period relative to something like stocks. It’s almost like a pump-and-dump scheme for investors.

"almost"

If even useful services are being abused for speculation, it's time to realise the entire space is fundamentally broken. We've already seen massive fraud in the space, it's only a matter of time before people who fundamentally don't understand what they are "investing in" are left holding bags. It will necessarily collapse because of how it's being used. (imo)

The complete lack of sense of scale that is on display when making comparisons between either of those and a one-term clown who will go down as a footnote in history is borderline disturbing.

Get some perspective.

I blows my mind that a company that's sold / leased a few hundred units (?) worth less than $100,000 each is valued at $1 billion.

I mean might hope the requirement to provide said meta-analysis would fall on the person making the claim that the criticism is sexist, not on the person saying it might not be?
Re:78 days, and still no broadband (Sky/Openreach, UK) on Thursday October 22, 2020 @09:39AM (#24857831)
Just out of interest, what makes you think that nationalising OpenReach would make them deliver a better "customer" experience?

In my personal experience dealing with e.g. HMRC, local councils etc does not offer me much confidence on that front.

The only benefit I can see personally is that there might be less room for error if there's less need for changes as people move in and out of properties.

[edit: On second thought I'll not walk into this minefield of a thread quite this nonchalantly with an "actually".]

The symbol does exist in a certain context of Antifa/ARA imagery, but if you use it in full context it just makes the Trump team look even worse, surprised the media hasn't picked up on this angle yet.

> I feel absolutely shit when I am trying to be relevant

Sounds like you should stop. Obsessing over social media isn't healthy and unless (perhaps even if) you're doing it professionally I very much doubt it's going to bring you value proportional to it's (negative) emotional and psychological impact.

Poor take. There are plenty of good engineering organisations in Europe, just as there are more than enough terrible ones in the US.

That being said I agree I wouldn't want to work somewhere like what was described above. It's certainly not a style of interview I would approve of or conduct myself.

I'm actually not convinced on the surface of it that economies of scale apply to government. It seems to me like the larger the population, the more layers of government required to effectively deploy capital.

If you assumed a similar per capita tax rate, but more government is required to deploy the taxes in a larger nation, the larger nation would presumably end up with less money deployed per capita.

Of course I am neither a social scientist, economist or political scientist.

The entire concept of "presented hobbies" is what we are taking issue with.

What wwould this better your odds for? Short-term dating success perhaps. I'm pretty sure there are better long-term strategies for happiness.

Be yourself, like what you like (unashamedly), and you will likely attract people into your life who like those same things, and indeed you.

Yeah fair enough then, that's true - misunderstood your comment.
I don't know anyone who calls take-home (net) pay gross salary in Europe. I have lived and worked in multiple countries.

And the actual gross is definitely displayed on the payslips.

Your definition of interesting might be the most interesting thing in this comment.

I would not say that any of that makes you particularly interesting. Some of it might make you attractive to certain people, but I think that's quite different from what was originally intended by "interesting" in this thread.

"Say it's your hobby"... I suggest actually finding a hobby. Because it will make you happier, not because it will make you "look interesting".

I guess the parents point might be that the price of soy bean then wouldn't have been a good bet, because any benefits from the shortage of animal proteins would surely have been un-done by the fact much less feed would have been purchased (for obvious reasons)? Demand may not really have risen.

Re:Moving to Germany as an Australian (2016) on Sunday December 15, 2019 @08:06AM (#21796027)
Was this ~2.5 years ago or so? I remember having a few instances of that in the kreuzberg area maybe but I don't remember it affecting basically the rest of the city at all. Like the other person in the thread I really loved the public transportation when I lived there, but yeah you have to build in your own buffers a little bit - I don't mind that so much.

Do you happen to know if it works for vagrant VM's? Because having a file system mismatch (symlinked dependencies in vm, IDE doesn't recognise them) is a bit of a pain point for me right now, it would be really fantastic to find a solution within VSC.
Yeah agreed, KB integration was another big one, as well as shortcuts when you have agents who do 3-4 chats at the same time. In fact the ability to define agent capacity individually and by role to begin with is important.

The ability to define different capacities for the same agent across different queues and how to aggregate that is also an advanced feature which is useful. E.g. I can take 3 in English or one in French and one in English. Or I can take 4 tier one tickets or 2 tier two tickets. Or I can do x tickets for customers on basic support but if I'm on with a customer who has priority... Etc

Queueing and assignment logic gets tricky because requirements can be vastly different across organisations. Hence why there are companies at the high end charging enterprise money.
