Do you include spreading lies on twitter about Paul Pelosi as part of "what it takes?"
They can sell the software business to broadcom.
Re:Railway GCP Account Suspension Incident Report on Wednesday May 20, 2026 @05:42PM (#48214569)
Really? This isn't the first time their automation took down a big customer (UniSuper in 2024) by accident. In that case the automation actually deleted the resources and GCP had to recover them.
Even libraries can only license digital content for a limited period of time/loans before being forced to purchase new licenses. See https://www.spokanelibrary.org/the-true-cost-of-ebooks-and-a...
Vendors are less likely to try and screw you over if they know they can't ban you for a chargeback.
I can believe that, the "eBay stalking scandal" article on Wikipedia is insane.
At least AWS will send people out to your office to tell you which services you aren't using but could.
Re:IPv6 Traffic Crosses the 50% Mark for the First Time on Thursday April 16, 2026 @12:45PM (#47796091)
Comcast actually implemented IPv6 10-15 years ago so that they could unify the management of all of their cable modems. Prior to that they had many regional networks using with modems assigned management IPs in overlapping private IPv4 ranges.
United had a "chairman's flight" between NY and a SC airport that was created so the chairman of the Port Authority of NY/NJ could fly to his vacation home on the weekends.
I think there is some benefit to resigning because you can see the DOJ is already suffering in court from sub-par lawyering. Every departure of a competent DOJ lawyer puts even more pressure on the remaining ones and there's only 24 hours in a day.
Re:OpenAI Should Build Slack on Sunday February 15, 2026 @12:36AM (#47021329)
Not quite, they built Slack as an internal communication tool while building the game Glitch (RIP) and after the game failed they decided to productize Slack.
Re:Why didn't AI "join the workforce" in 2025? on Tuesday January 06, 2026 @01:26PM (#46516378)
> machines will achieve human level output at some point

Would you care to put some sort of time scale to "at some point?" Are we talking about months, years, decades, centuries?

Fun fact: For now, adding a boolean search term like -blahblahblah will skip the AI result and just show web results.
Re:Guideline has been acquired by Gusto on Monday November 03, 2025 @10:14PM (#45807102)
Fun Guideline story: I worked for a company that went bankrupt and used guideline for 401k. The first day the website allowed me I withdrew the balance for rollover. Apparently this should not have been possible before the bankruptcy was finalized. I found from court filings that the bankruptcy trustee kept telling Guideline they need to freeze withdrawals until the bankruptcy was finalized, and Guideline kept dragging their feet and acting like they didn't understand. The trustee ended up having to go to court and get a temporary restraining order to prevent more employees from withdrawing their balances before the bankruptcy was finalized.

Un-fun bankruptcy fact: All employee names & mailing addresses are part of the public record and accessible on PACER because they're potential creditors in the bankruptcy.

Not even, in cases where the company couldn't recover funds from misdirected payments they ate the loss. Though obviously I think that's a good thing.
Re:A change of address led to our Wise accounts being shut down on Thursday October 30, 2025 @08:02PM (#45766906)
Not even corner cases. I worked for a fintech that launched a dda-ish product that had 16 digit account numbers, issued sequentially, with no check digits. At launch there didn't seem to be a CS process for dealing with pretty obvious "customer mistyped account number and sent their money to some else's account." problem.
I think the high-density data centers that are being built to support the hyperscalers are more analogous to the dark fiber overbuild. When you lit that fiber in 2015, you (presumably) were not using a line card bought back in 1998.
So this will force datacenters that employ "reliability theater" to either actually be reliable or give up the facade and take repeated outages?

Ok!

Maybe the "wagyu" chili with a big 'ol squirt of nacho cheeze sauce?
Re:AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks on Wednesday July 23, 2025 @11:22PM (#44666547)
Google was kind enough to give the AI overview a stable CSS class name (to date), so this userscript has been effective at hiding it for me:

window.addEventListener('load', function() { var things = this.document.getElementsByClassName('M8OgIe'); for (var thing of things) { thing.style.display = 'none'; } }, false);

Re:xAI's Grok 3 comes to Microsoft Azure on Monday May 19, 2025 @01:35PM (#44032403)
The technology couldn't stop talking about white genocide for hours.
Democrats see government differently than Republicans.
And it was an antitrust action that unlocked a lot of that value. The consent decree required Bell Labs to license its patents (e.g. transistors) for reasonable royalties. The same consent degree also forbid AT&T from entering new industries like computing. So after they built UNIX, they sold the source code 'as-is' to universities for $200 ($20k for businesses).
One funny aspect is that Javice had an employment contract with JPM that stated JPM would pay for legal defense related to her official duties. Her lawyer argued that means JPM has to pay for her civil and criminal defense lawyers, and the court agreed!
Re:When imperfect systems are good: Bluesky's lossy timelines on Wednesday February 19, 2025 @09:24PM (#43110362)
They have figured it out, the client is paying for it.
Good news! Bluesky does default to chronological, but also provides other options.
Then I'd suggest their tagline of "Democracy dies in darkness" is pretty self-important and misleading.
> local weather manipulation

What do you mean by this?

Re:Telephone Line Rural Outside Plant on Monday September 02, 2024 @12:35PM (#41426807)
There's some videos on the AT&T Tech Channel on YouTube that show inside the CO, like this one for the "Speedy cutover service": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saRir95iIWk
Compliance was important because the product (RealPage's AIRM nee YieldStar) works by holding prices higher for longer than the average manager would. The RealPage pricing software is eye-watering expensive and can only be justified if it results in significantly higher revenue.
