The major instances are coming back online.

X already knows who the maintainer is and could easily go after him.
Re:Following legal advice, the Nitter project will continue on Sunday September 06, 2026 @02:26PM (#49589364)
I think that this is different because Nitter uses real X accounts for scraping, rather than publicly available data.
Re:Following legal advice, the Nitter project will continue on Sunday September 06, 2026 @02:22PM (#49589315)
The project maintainer, Zedeus, runs the most or second-most popular instance, and I assume his lawyers decided that was okay.
Re:Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns on Sunday September 06, 2026 @01:33PM (#49588816)
I can assure you that was not an instance on the list.
Re:Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns on Saturday September 05, 2026 @10:25PM (#49582723)
Most nitter instances don't do anything to avoid legal trouble from X. They simply hope that X will not go after them. There are some instances which do put in effort to stay anonymous, and they usually do that with a Cloudflare tunnel to hide their server IP and by not posting any personal details online.

For Reddit you can use Redlib (https://github.com/redlib-org/redlib), I host an instance at https://redlib.miningtcup.me/ and people also like https://safereddit.com/.

None of the sites on the codeberg instance list spread malware. If you can link to one that does, I would be shocked. Some of the instances use CAPTCHAs such as DogWAF to prevent scraping, but those are absolutely not malware.

That does work, but it misses out on several of nitter's benefits:

- It requires JavaScript - It is not great for privacy, being behind Cloudflare and having numerous trackers - It is not open-source

It is possible to create X accounts without a phone number. I run [service].miningtcup.me and it uses 5 accounts, none of which required phone numbers for me to create, and none of which I paid for. You just have to get creative.
Re:Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns on Saturday September 05, 2026 @04:52PM (#49580530)
All the instances on the list agreed to be put on it. Their maintainers decided that they were willing to be on it because it's unlikely that they will get a C&D.
Re:Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns on Saturday September 05, 2026 @04:50PM (#49580515)
No, not automatically. The list is instances which are reliable, so if an instance is ratelimited any noticeable portion of the time, it won't be up there.
Re:Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns on Saturday September 05, 2026 @04:46PM (#49580483)
None of the instances listed have anything like that going on. I believe that all listed instances use either https://www.cloudflare.com/products/turnstile/, https://anubis.techaro.lol/, https://git.miningtcup.me/MiningTcup/dogwaf (made by me), or nothing at all. I recommend against using instances not listed unless you know the host because there are reasons for them to not be listed. I won't elaborate on the reasons for some major instances not being on the list as I want to keep my HN account.
Re:Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns on Saturday September 05, 2026 @04:37PM (#49580417)
The shady service is only for people looking to host nitter, and it's not required. My instance uses accounts that I made myself, for free.

I know the guy and it does work, and it's not an ad. Accounts from that website are used on shitter.thepixora.com. The website is extremely sketchy though, he recommends that you don't give it more than a dollar at a time.
Re:Lies We Tell Ourselves About Email Addresses on Tuesday June 09, 2026 @10:24PM (#48470569)
I would like to point out that the "suggested" validation pattern, ^[^@]+@[^@\s]+$, can filter out valid addresses. "user@something"@example.com is a valid address, and excluding @'s in the user part rejects it.
