Well that's an easy workaround - al-Qaeda is anywhere and everywhere so we have to spy anywhere and everywhere.

But didn't you see that movie about the guy with the hotel?

This is really, really, well done. It'd be nice with some simple styling, to not make it look too "alpha-geek" to the wider tech sphere. Otherwise, cracking work.

VirtualDub+Deshaker.
Apart from the part where it manufactures its own panels from its own resources.
"The impact smashed the patrol car’s windshield, leaving the deputy with cuts on his arm and glass in his eyes."

Clearly the peace officer was the victim of the cyclist's irresponsible road behaviour here!

Re:Free Mathematics Books on Monday December 09, 2013 @03:47AM (#6873415)
You should look at the intro to David Mackay's information theory book. It had something akin to what you're saying...
"I'm like a lover you just beat up for the first time"

Surely that just demonstrates poor knowledge of history? I mean, between the unethical experimentation on its own citizens of the 20th century and before, Japanese internment camps, the Gulf of Tonkin, the overthrowing of democratic governments in Iran, Iran-Contra, drone attacks for the past 7+ years, Guantanamo, the illegal invasion of Iraq, retroactive immunity for executors of some of the aforementioned...(and that's just off the top of my rather poor memory), how could your disdain have only recently arisen?

I find that a better analogy would be an uncle who gave you nice Christmas presents, so you ignored the persistent rumours that he molested your cousins. And now you're starting to receive the same treatment.

We should mandate subdermal GPS tags for everyone.

Think of the children.

Not all raids, no.
Also the fact that he is a supporter of the IRA, both in his statements for the past 40 or so years, and also materially (back during the Troubles). How the hell does a guy like that end up as Committee Chairman for Homeland Security?
"Host it wherever you want" - unless it's physically self-hosted, it's not truly "yours" is it?

Can you elaborate a bit on said psychological structure?

But this way, my $employer's Business School can charge 19 thousand for an MSc in Data Science and Management!

Quantitative business analyst just doesn't sound as wallet-opening.

Re:How My Co-founder's Dog Boosted My Productivity on Monday April 08, 2013 @01:09AM (#5510069)
You don't have to go through the process of imprinting a routine from scratch with a rescue dog, do you?
Re:A Practical Intro to Data Science on Sunday April 07, 2013 @07:54PM (#5509272)
Depends on the analysis lifecycle I think - I hate using Matlab for writing any sort of large experimental framework in, especially if it has to interact with other systems, but for quick and dirty experiments, plotting, or parallelizing totally independent for-loops eg. for a grid-search over some model hyper-parameters, it's great (the latter is literally changing "for" to "parfor". After you fork out for the Parallel Computing Toolbox of course.) But then a lot of code in research is written in the style of use-code-for-a-week->get a graph->curve is higher than their curve?->publication.

When I need to write something more substantive and reusable though, Python forever.

Well, I meant the software engineer job market...

I don't think mechanical engineers get any perks anyway.

I do sometimes wonder if this "PhD is a waste of time" is being pushed so heavily to get a glut of the best computer science grads, who would otherwise consider a PhD, onto the engineer job market. A cute little trick to drive down the salaries a bit, cut back on the perks...

I mean, people posting links like this, on this board, don't really have English lit grads in mind, do they?

Not that I disagree with the sentiment entirely, but it seems to be getting a lot of mileage the past few months.

And also that weight isn't the variable you should be optimizing, but rather body composition.

Zimbabwe. Or South Africa.

You could pop over to Zim to see what's wrong with that statement.
Wiping things out full-stop is difficult - look at myxomatosis application in Australia.

"Deadly [to rabbits] disease kills rabbits. It's completely expected, not amazing at all."

And yet, rabbits have regained a significant foothold in Australia, despite myx absolutely decimating the population in the 50s. It's not just about micro-scale effectiveness, it's about effective timing and implementation. Same goes for AIDs meds in Africa, or forest fires.

Re:Hackathons are bad for you on Friday March 01, 2013 @09:34AM (#5304369)
This line of logic could be used as a justification for doing anything. "Meth is bad for you? So is going outside, cos pollution or something."
Re:Simple Charters: Instant Private Flights on Tuesday February 26, 2013 @07:33AM (#5285179)
The 3rd slide (coin-based histogram) has a disingenuous scale...is the vertical axis exponential or something?!

[edit] Looking further down, it turns out that all their graphs are horrific.
