Re:Apple reports fourth quarter results on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:22PM (#50345584)
Because good news indicates a relative high and that’s when you should sell.

Look at the 3 month chart. Strong quarter. Certainly doesn’t look like a deal I want to get in on

Re:Private Jet plane crashes in Florida on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:22AM (#50338044)
If you have an ounce of empathy, hearing someone scream in terror and narrate their final moments will affect you negatively. The pilot is aware of the situation the entire time.

In every thread on this not a single person I have expressed anything other than regret for having heard it

Re:Casio Watches of the 1980s on Saturday October 31, 2026 @01:59PM (#50318378)
Casio is a fashion brand. They have G-shock watches in matte black if that’s what you want

https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GA-2100LXB-1...

They also have entire lines that aren’t G-shock such as their edifice line that are more dress oriented

https://www.casio.com/us/watches/edifice/product.EFV-160D-1A...

Fact is g-shock is their most popular line and they release collabs with streetwear brands all the time. People really like the styling

Re:Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews' on Friday October 30, 2026 @03:14PM (#50308832)
The fact that you are framing it as a binary between “demand performance” and “coddling” tells me you don’t really have strong people skills
The ones I had were chalky like Necco wafers

So you could literally puff out and make the dust from the wafer look like you were smoking

Cool stuff for a five year old!

Re:Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews' on Friday October 30, 2026 @03:04PM (#50308679)
Teams are made of people. People skills make you more effective at dealing with people.

Obviously you can be a total prick and demand performance and maybe get some people onboard but nobody thrives in those environments and unless you want to deal with turnover and mediocrity you foster good working environments with your teammates

Baseball is simply harder to watch. It’s true that NFL games are very much stop and go but the game moves.

Baseball will literally have complete innings where nothing happens unless you really geek out on pitching. Last year they had a World Series game go on for almost seven hours and it was only 6-5 at the end

It’s a super interesting game because the defense controls the ball and there is no clock. This also means the games can just drag on and on with no end in sight

Toronto is in the league. I agree it is a silly name but it’s not going to change anytime soon as it’s a tradition going back more than a century

It’s also worth pointing out that MLB has the best players from all around the world. The Dominican Republic and Japan have strong baseball players and their best players tend to end up in MLb

Re:Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @12:24PM (#50276257)
I’d think it really depends on the heat and proximity to the road

If a battery pack burn less hot and sits higher off the roadway, I can see it being less damaging

I support the death penalty for corporations.
I can think of 26 billion reasons why another platform doesn’t just appear and disrupt Meta

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitio...

And what if you want to contact someone? Are they on signal or WhatsApp or telegram? Or is it discord? Which server? How can I find that thing someone sent? Let me just open all those apps and start searching

I think you underestimate how little tolerance the average person has for this kind of friction. These huge platforms win because everyone is on them and it all just works.

The network effect is powerful. But we also need to be honest with ourselves. Signal is an objectively worse client than Messages, especially when the average person does not value privacy.
Legal != moral

When laws are only enforced against an underclass, they are inherently immoral

Cool. The parent claim was that 5% of users were doing something. A claim which has no basis in evidence.
Plex and Tailscale are notoriously tricky to get working together. Just any search of those two words returns pages of forum help topics
You have no way of knowing and also how much content is legal or not

My plex library has my entire library that I’ve been curating since iTunes was released which is now predominantly FLAC files I buy from Bleep and Bandcamp

Every movie I have ever bought is there too. I suppose technically it’s all illegal right? I copied it. In some cases I even bypassed some things the DMCA outlawed to do so.

And so what?

It’s such a quaint sentiment in 2026 to care about illegal content when the entirety of the LLM industry did this, but far worse, at scale, and nobody has even charged Meta or anyone else with infringement.

Plex and their users is not the problem

Re:Major ICQ security hole (1998) on Friday October 16, 2026 @12:02PM (#50120100)
If vendors didn’t make it a default setting that would still be the case today

I remember when SunOS shipped enterprise servers with pretty much every service enabled. And the patching process was so cumbersome and risky many admins never bothered applying the recommended patch clusters

So much to explore and poke at!

So where is FSD that has been promised since 2017?

Cool stunt car though

If the last decade of Siri has taught us anything, they can literally ship the worst version of a thing and people will still buy an iphone. They’re just that good.
Re:Major ICQ security hole (1998) on Thursday October 15, 2026 @07:45PM (#50111902)
It really was a fun time. I remember sitting in a coffee shop just sniffing WiFi traffic.

A friend was a reporter for the local paper and interviewed the mayor. I turned my laptop around and showed my friend the mayors imap password. Just right there floating through the air.

Re:Siri is so bad at everything on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:32PM (#50106148)
Funny, my Rivian assistant is more useful for this use case than Siri

I did some side by side navigation queries and was surprised how much more I preferred the responses from a company that isn’t even really trying to be a major AI player

Re:The Haunted Toys R Us on Thursday October 15, 2026 @09:40AM (#50103583)
Toys making noise when nobody is around to play with them is a pretty common “ghost” encounter. We had one ourselves with a Sesame Street Ernie doll that would randomly say “I feel great” in an empty room , in the middle of the night, etc. caught it on video once triggering with the doll just lying on the floor.

Turns out when battery voltage gets low (but not yet dead) this can happen in a circuit. I swapped out the batteries and our ghost never came back. Not surprised to hear it happening in a store where stock just sits there for a long time.

Pretty creepy though to hear that when you are lying in bed

What a blow to Elon to lose his account in his own platform
You can buy whatever phone you want. Many of them can run multiple OSes if that’s what you want. There is not a single mobile platform in town.

When Ford sells me an F150 I don’t cry about them having a monopoly on their Sync platform. That’s not now monopolies work

Does Ford have a monopoly position on the F150 because I can’t run Linux on it?
Re:New Apple TV 4K on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:19PM (#50076194)
Apples services division broke records for revenue so there’s a way to look at the TV hardware as a kind of loss leader for subscriptions

But everything is way more expensive than it was a year ago. Nothing escapes this inflation we are going through

Ridiculous take

Android’s global marketshare is 70% of mobile so you would have to declare a monopoly as “things I can run on an iPhone” as your position for that to work

There is plenty of competition and choice to iOS, you just won’t find that on Apple hardware for reasons that have held for three decades

Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:46AM (#50071698)
Pets.com became the emblem of the dot com bubble. Obviously there was a fortune to be made in online retail but they didn’t have it

Will c.ai be the pets.com of this bubble?

Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:43AM (#50071656)
I have never used it but the reputation it has in my bubble is that kids just used it to goon to Disney characters

So the problem is your customers don’t pay for anything and your content is unlicensed
