Inscrutable to you does not imply inscrutable to everyone. Haskell is a different beast since it has to type check everything in a fine grained way.
Given that software is composed of a hierarchy of dependencies, I would like to see a funding approach that works at the dependency tree level to support an entire tree or sub tree. There is a huge freeloader problem where business don't contribute any support for their core dependencies. I wonder if there is a role for an organization that could act as the interface for corporate support at the dependency tree level. It could offload maintainers (or fund them) to handle certain compliance requirements and provide an official sanctioned entity for purposes of corporate policies. There should be a way to garner support broadly for risk management and specifically for security in the corporate context.

Re:Covid-19: Do many people have pre-existing immunity? on Thursday September 17, 2020 @03:12PM (#24508703)
See: https://www.news-medical.net/news/20200731/Research-suggests...

In addition to immunity based on T cells, the HIT depends on how individuals are networked. The original 60-70% estimates were based on 100% of people being vulnerable and also a random distribution of individuals interacting. In reality a small fraction of the population will have many interactions and once they become immune those transmission vectors away and the average R number drops. So based on the latest research plus observations of the worst hit places, 20-25% seems plausible.

Alternatively pass regulations to make private companies over a certain size report more.

Re:Bill Gates calls for nationwide shutdown on Wednesday April 01, 2020 @12:21PM (#22750417)
Just assuming the cost does little to prepare us for the next one. Think of this as a dry run for testing all the strategies for tech and social norms that will help us with the next one.
Man's Search for Meaning.
Buying time does get you better drugs, better testing, better data as to how much distancing is needed (there are a range of options), ability to tailor response to outbreaks in specific areas, and ultimately the vaccine. All this information is useful for future outbreaks which will potentially be worse. Alternatively if everyone gets sick at once there will be a massive percentage of people either too sick to work or out of work caring for others.
Re:Ask HN: How are you preparing for COVID-19 disruptions? on Wednesday February 26, 2020 @05:07PM (#22427903)
Some measures are easier that others. It is important to have at least a basic level of preparedness. E.g., get sleep and eat nutritious food to keep your immune system optimal.
Re:Ask HN: How are you preparing for COVID-19 disruptions? on Wednesday February 26, 2020 @05:05PM (#22427871)
You can maximize immune system functioning by making sure you get proper nutrition and plenty of sleep.

Re:Outdoor Computing with a Deck Desk on Saturday December 21, 2019 @08:40PM (#21854563)
I had sore wrists from overuse for about 3 years. It cleared up when I started cross country skiing and jogging. It took about a year to clear up. This was 20 years ago and it hasn't bothered me since. I do make a point to take breaks, exercise including weightlifting. I also eat more protein now relative to when I had the issue.
I hope starlink succeeds too. That said, it is still important to fight back politically. I should help in the longer term and it also makes it clear to other industries with large monopolies that they may be next on the chopping block. They have had it easy for too long.

I got the Librem 15" laptop about a year and a half ago. I am happy with it. I ran QubesOS for a couple of moths and NixOS since with no issues.

The culprit is unequal distribution of wealth. The working class is affected by low minimum wage, limited access to healthcare, cost of education, and broken social security (AFP).
