Tailwindcss makes using CSS easier, it’s still CSS underneath, which you can interface with directly if you want.

For medium to large applications it takes quite a bit of work to give your Qt GUI a custom style, and do it right. This isn’t something you can hand wave away.

> Doesn't resize decently,

About HTML+CSS, that’s just incorrect.

Go and try Tailwindcss and then tell me how bad HTML is at resizing.

You shouldn’t call it a hyperbole. Sometimes you have to point things out for what they are rather continue to pretend that it is normal.
Re:Tell HN: iCloud Password Sync turns on by itself on iOS 17 on Thursday December 14, 2023 @11:41PM (#38651049)
This is a bad response to Apple stealing personal information from millions of people. OP is not alone when it comes to iCloud partially or completely enabling itself upon updates. The problem is that malware is perfectly legal as long as you have some EULA somewhere to cover it.
Nor the incentive. The one mentioned by OP sounds unrealistic.

Trackers will be able to gain root access by fetching the user’s local Docker API socket, and by doing so provide better personalized ads. This is really good, sign me in!
Social media and media organisations are too volatile to be entrusted with important pieces of history.

I can’t even access the tweet.

It must be sarcasm.

In reality, people don’t have the time to read up on these issues to build an opinion in the first place. The most potent media corporations that could’ve amplified this issue for the general public are effectively propaganda machines for whoever pays the most or has the biggest guns to their heads.

It’s a sad state of affairs. Most of the public are unaware that a cage is being built around them.

But those who do have some understanding about these threats, they certainly are increasingly more distrustful.

I don’t think the concern here is TLS, but rather how CloudFlair works. This is a unique problem to CloudFlair. TLS itself is not the issue.

Worsening geopolitics and an ageing population are more immideate problem compared to the inability to eliminate (not reduce) carbon emissions.

Or am I missing something? Can someone explain to me why ”eliminating carbon emissions” was sandwiched between the other two issues?

Re:Pdftool.org: modify pdfs offline in the browser on Sunday August 13, 2023 @03:00PM (#37113025)
I have not. I will look into it later.

The issue that many people were raising is with regards to privacy (not saying your app infringes upon it in any way). If PWA deployment can ensure that the app truly stays offline, then that’s a good thing.

I personally like open source better, as it is easier to examine the inner workings of the app. It also helps tech-savvy users fix bugs and verify that it doesn’t do anything they don’t want it to do. Etc etc

Also, Electron apps can be sandboxed using Flatpaks for instance. Flatpaks aren’t perfect of course, but they do provide some guarantees. You can even use Flatpaks while keeping the source code closed.

Re:Pdftool.org: modify pdfs offline in the browser on Sunday August 13, 2023 @01:45PM (#37112207)
If it’s offline, bundle it with Electron, release the source code and make the build process public!

Re:EU lawmakers take first steps toward tougher AI rules on Saturday May 13, 2023 @11:08AM (#35929101)
I have mixed feelings about this. Banning these technologies and then putting a few exceptions for the government isn’t an ideal solution to this problem. It feels like a power-grab. If you really want to for example tackle mass-surveillance, remove many of the cameras and reduce centralized control so that the police actually have to go and physically request recordings. But they are not doing that.

I haven’t mentioned ChatGPT because this AI act seems to extend beyond just ChatGPT and as the article mentions also sets rules for facial recognition and other similarly problematic technologies.

India hates Pakistan. Knowing this, it’s hard not to take what they have to say about Pakistan’s politics with a grain of salt.

They may not be actively showing this material, but at the very least they are facilitating porn use by minors. There is no acceptable reason to keep pornography in a school library.
Do you think that showing a minor pornography is okay because they can seek it out themselves?

Furthermore, do you think that buying alcohol to a minor is okay if they can seek it out themselves?

>read

Visual depictions.

That’s such a disingenuous argument because the books that the ”book banning” critics are talking about involve visual depictions of, among other things, fellatio between men. It’s hardly anything a grownup that’s not engaged in grooming would show a kid.

Calling it ”book banning” as if ideas are being surpressed or something, is very dishonest and it’s getting quite transparent at this point.

This is why people who argue that Signal should use usernames and passwords rather than phone numbers for authentication really don’t understand how important UX is for privacy.
Re:Why Are So Many Young Men Single and Sexless? on Monday February 27, 2023 @05:37AM (#34954913)
This is such a strange response. Aren’t women in their 20s adults?

Women think of men already having a partner as an indication of him being reliability, which is a positive.

Thanks for sharing your PoV.

The way I look at parenting is that initially it’s guarding and restrictive, but slowly one lets go in such a way that the child is on a good path in life. So the way I look at it is that it’s a parent’s responsibility to provide some kind of framework. Then different parents may obviously argue what that framework should be…

Re:Seven states push to require ID for watching porn online on Tuesday February 14, 2023 @10:01PM (#34799502)
It’ll act as an additional hurdle, which is good. If people want to take their time to use a proxy, then they can still do so. What this prevents is easy access by minors. Right now anyone, regardless of age is a few clicks away from seeing porn on their smartphone.
Re:Seven states push to require ID for watching porn online on Tuesday February 14, 2023 @09:57PM (#34799464)
> although I'm not 100% sure I think they shouldn't be able to access it at all until they're 18

Obviously I can’t tell you how to raise your own children, but you yourself are seeing that porn is harmful at least up to a certain age. It’s especially good to prevent porn during a child’s formative years.

I would argue that porn isn’t good for anyone really, considering at least the following factors:

1. Like a drug, it numbs the senses and leads to the consumer needing more and more extreme content to feel the same level of satisfaction as before.

2. It’s not clear whether or not the female participants are consenting or not. Not too long ago PornHub got a lot of heat for spreading videos of the abuse of minors on their platform. They ended up having to purge millions of their videos because consent could not be verified. So imagine if God forbid you or your child unknowingly watches these types of abuse.

3. It changes the viewer’s attitude to women. Porn portrays women as public toilets, no dignity or honour whatsoever.

4. If you’re fine with other people’s daughters acting in these videos, then ask yourself: would you accept that for your own womenfolk?

There is more to say, but let’s move on.

You can technically bypass this using a VPN. What this law practically does is adding an additional hurdle for children from seeing this stuff, and that’s something good. Adults on the other hand, are generally speaking capable of setting up a VPN to bypass whatever filter they want.

> In America violence and weapons are pushed onto "the children" daily.

A double-negative is not a positive.

> But god forbid they learn about or see a sex act, which by the way quite literally is what ensures the continuation of the human species.

Sex, which ensures the continuation of the human species, is not the same as watching porn. No porn is needed for human-beings to know what to do.

Come on! You know this argument is bullshit.

You can’t expect parents in this day and age to have the ability to protect their children from this material where smartphones are owned by almost everyone with unlimited internet access. When something becomes a wide societal problem then using the arm of the state can become a valid option to mitigate the issue. This is not about parenting grown-ups, this is about helping parents fix something that they can’t fix themselves at an individual level.

If a grown-up really wants to watch porn, they can use a VPN. It’s not hard, no ID is needed. By adding a hurdle for children to access this material we can protect them from getting harmed by it at a young age. I think setting up a VPN is a small price to pay for if it means increasing the average age of exposure to porn.

I’ll add to what you said by reiterating what happened not too long ago where PornHub were forced to purge millions of videos because they couldn’t verify that they were consensual. This happened after a large push-back from over two million people due to the publishing and re-publishing of rape footage of underaged women. These videos stood up for weeks and months before someone at PornHub took them down, they of course resurfaced again.

Imagine a child unknowingly watching rape on film. It’s bad for an adult, what about a child?

I don’t think most people really understand how vile and harmful porn is. I also think that regardless of the downvotes, it’s good to speak up against this. The intention is not to convince someone that doesn’t have a conscience, but to inform people who’re just unaware.

”deploying” is the closest I can come up with right now, but it’s not quite the same.
