News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Not under this administration.. probably the closest is contributing to open source alternatives to services that were killed (like the IRS free tax filing that 18F helped to build and which was subsequently DOGE’d).
Yes, there’s some new design studio that’s replaced the design aspect of 18F. Doesn’t change the fact that 18F was eliminated - https://www.nextgov.com/people/2025/03/gsa-eliminates-18f/40...

(Ill note that this design studio is being led by newly proud white nationalist Joe gebbia who apparently blames illegal aliens and their ‘anchor babies’ for high housing costs apparently while unironically forgetting he cofounded airbnb: https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!VCGY!,w_1272,c_limit... - I mean look at these posts back to back, I wonder why they’re unable to recruit anyone: https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ArmA!,w_1272,c_limit...)

The vast majority of the competent people got DOGE’d. CISA lost like 40% of their staff including much of their red team specialty. 18F was completely eliminated (“Deleted” as Musk put it). If some specialist in the FBI who could have helped prevent the hack happened to have been assigned to work on the Classified Docs case, they were also fired because the most corrupt, incompetent group of morons is running things in DC for the next few years.

Likewise. Even companies like Saildrone where ~100% of the marketing before 2025 was about mapping the oceans and autonomous storm monitoring with their bright orange craft are now releasing videos with missile launching pods attached to navy gray versions: https://www.saildrone.com/news/us-navy-rimpac-lockheed-marti...

Love the little side project of building a high resolution high speed camera to investigate the flutter.
Figure 4 shows left-wing political violence completely flat with a 1 year decrease in right wing violence as the basis for your “flipped” narrative. Table 1 shows the last 10 years highlighting 152 right wing attacks causing 112 deaths and 35 left wing attacks causing 13 deaths…

The tech on the ISS is several decades old - modern versions of traditional radiators could dissipate about 1MW in a 3 metric ton package with a surface area of ~300m2. With advanced options like liquid droplet radiators, that weight could be cut in half.

Google and Amazon abide by US sanctions - if these are Russian firms, it’ll take much longer to get bespoke approval to pay AWS or GCP.. my org is smaller than those and we just outright banned Russian companies after Ukraine was invaded. Too much of a headache and too risky.
Why would government services not be subject to the same cost pressures due to inflation as the rest of society?
It wasn’t the exact strain, the mutations were nothing like you’d expect them to make, and good lord people on HN need better news and science sources if this is still the level of discussion on the topic.
Re:ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026 on Friday September 25, 2026 @10:40AM (#49845325)
For better or worse, Ireland’s extremely lax tax rules resulted in a ton of multinational corporate cash ‘stuck’ there with companies having the option of spending there roughly tax free or repatriating back to the US at some rate higher than that. It also really helps sell the ‘of course an Irish subsidiary owns all of our IP’ tax claims if there is actual spending there, hence you got all the pharma investment and the capital projects from others like Intel and Apple.
I've always found it crazy that if you search for a brand name / trademarked name that it's legal for the search provider to shove a bunch of vaguely related shit above the results unless that brand pays for ad placement to be the top result. Sure, fine, put whatever ad pays the most at the top of the search for "best iOS game" - but when someone searches "Wordle" - that you can't rely on Wordle being the top result is a indictment of the whole ad-supported internet. (Sub 'Claude' or 'Discord' or whatever other search term and it's the same issue)
Re:US military reveals it has weapons in space on Monday September 14, 2026 @11:11PM (#49707258)
I mean, true, but also, nobody is going to give up weapons while the US is kidnapping heads of state, launching decapitation strikes and invading a half dozen new countries.

They’ve massively expanded into Lebanon and Gaza, settlements are continuing to grow at an alarming pace, the Saudis have little choice but to get massively more involved in fighting Iran and their proxies, A less feckless US campaign could have eliminated or greatly weakened Iran’s nuclear program, Bibi’s mostly consolidated all power in Israel… it hasn’t worked out that poorly for Israel.
Re:My Mental Model of AI Broke on September 8 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @02:21PM (#49631127)
It isn't hard to conceive of things that plateau so perhaps OP thought that the 'intelligence' underlying these models would reach some mark and then level off. If instead they just keep getting smarter/better, that can really impact the highest potential use that people can imagine for them.
Re:QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes on Monday September 07, 2026 @09:28PM (#49604700)
There is a lot of good analysis of the Appeals process on this specific point - the CFAA as written required unauthorized access:

Section 1030(a)(5)(A), covers anyone who

(5) intentionally accesses a Federal interest computer without authorization, and by means of one or more instances of such conduct alters, damages, or destroys information in any such Federal interest computer, or prevents authorized use of any such computer or information, and thereby

(A) causes loss to one or more others of a value aggregating $1,000 or more during any one year period; ... [emphasis added].

The District Court concluded that the intent requirement applied only to the accessing and not to the resulting damage. Judge Munson found recourse to legislative history unnecessary because he considered the statute clear and unambiguous. However, the Court observed that the legislative history supported its reading of section 1030(a)(5)(A).

I'm not sure how you could categorize the Morris Worm as lacking mens rea based on that statute..

Re:QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes on Sunday September 06, 2026 @01:49PM (#49588990)
Not remotely true. Mens rea is a necessary precondition to establish criminal culpability for tons of crimes. Well before sentencing is ever considered. The far opposite, ‘strict liability’, where you’re guilty of a crime purely due to some action or inaction (the actus reus) is exceedingly rare in the US justice system.

That’s like 90% of parenting until kids age out of it. That being said, my 2.5yo kid can swim well enough today that I’d have no qualms at all about them being at a neighborhood pond by themselves in a few years.

They can skip the legalese because Musk had testified under oath that Grok was distilling OpenAI models while Elon was on the board of OpenAI.

Re:The Life and Death of Direct File [pdf] on Monday August 17, 2026 @12:12AM (#49326492)
More concretely and timely for this discussion - the beneficial ownership registry was passed in the 2021 NDAA by congress and signed by Biden. So there's a law on the books that FinCEN needs to collect the ownership data for all US companies to prevent money laundering.

This week, Bessent decided that the signature policy of the Corporate Transparency Act, a bipartisan effort to stymie cartels and foreign oligarchs, would not only be stopped, but they instructed FinCEN to delete all the records they've already collected.

Easily the most lawless gang of corrupt bureaucrats that have ever held office in the US.

Looks like it was a strike-slip fault, so a much lower tsunami risk compared to a subduction / dip-slip fault.
As someone who lives in the Great Lakes region - there are a ton of 100 mile flights that would take 4 hours to drive - often as the first leg in a two-flight trip. Also places like Denver -> Ski resorts (Vail/Aspen/Crested Butte) are 2 - 3hr drives, heavily dependent on road conditions all within the pure-electric range.

One other bit in support is that the person you’re replying to read “university student” but OP said “Post-Doc” which I guess technically is a student at a university but a post-doc EE is an exceptionally skilled and specialized role who’s likely been working on that specific problem for 8+ years.

In some number of cases, the business partner who would have passed you the requirements will just generate the code themselves.. I’m shocked shin some engineers don’t see a massive disruption coming..
Crank author at a crank “institution” - I can’t assess whether the OpenAI paper is accurate but I highly doubt this is going to be the paper to disprove it.
Even in the first option, it is so much easier to destroy something than to build it. This is causing damage that will take a generation to reverse. Why would any foreign students choose to study here if we’re one election from deporting them and banning them from working here?

> If no images are released on the internet (and users consume them privately), no one is harmed in the process.

Yikes.

A. They were released all over the internet - from the article..

> The chatbot has a public account on X, where users can ask it questions or request alterations to images. Users flocked to the social media site, in many cases asking Grok to remove clothing in images of women and children, after which the bot publicly posted the A.I.-generated images.

B. There is a bunch of data about consumers of CSAM 'content escalating' and eventually attempting to make real contact with minors.

C. They were sexualizing pictures of real people and posting the pictures online.

> One of the young plaintiffs said she found out about the imagery after she received an anonymous message on Instagram pointing her toward images and videos, including her high school yearbook photo, which had been altered to show her in sexually explicit actions and full nudity.

The material was being shared on a Discord server, a private chat space on that platform, and included similar imagery that had also been altered using Grok of at least 18 other women who were minors, according to the complaint.
