Ah, the "rampant voter fraud" narrative. Which has been disproven time and again, including when Republicans go looking for it (see: Arizona).
For those that don’t feel like watching a video, it was the Times Datalink.

Yes, that’s my second argument: even if it were implemented, you think Apple’s going to let just any ol’ POS IoT junk use an Apple TV’s connection? “Pass through using my IP address doing $DEITY-knows-what? Sure, random device, have at it!”
Re:Casio Watches of the 1980s on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:24PM (#50341225)
I don't think you're going to find Garmin to be any better. Garmin goes to the other extreme of allegedly sussing out you REM/deep/whatever sleep patterns from a HR monitor and an accelerometer. Eh, color me skeptical. IMO, Apple tells you what it is confident in telling you, and that's what time you went to bed, how many times you got up, and maybe figures out when you were awake.

That said, there are several AW apps that I've or my spouse have used that might be to your liking. I've used Autosleep (not in a while, though), and I think it might be more along what you're looking for (though you've not said specifically what you're looking for). It tries to figure out sleep patterns, and all that other stuff. More like what Garmin offers, I guess. Autosleep is pretty good at figuring out when you go to sleep without telling it. Meaning, for example, it picks up naps that Apple's built-in doesn't.

My wife has used Pillow, and it seems okay. Same as above with functionality, though I've forgotten why I didn't use Pillow instead of Autosleep.

HTH.

Ah, the obligatory “but ETH over HDMI!” It doesn’t need to be “considered” because it doesn’t exist outside a spec.
Re:Casio Watches of the 1980s on Saturday October 31, 2026 @03:21PM (#50319189)
That would be a reasonable answer most of the time, but as the topic was sleep tracking I'd disagree. Consensus I've seen seems to be that Apple has better sleep tracking (having used both, I would agree). Even if they don't, one can swap out to use another sleep tracking app. I think you're stuck with what you get out of the box with Garmin. (Though I've not looked at Garmin's app store. Knowing what I do about their SDK, I doubt a 3rd party could write a usable replacement app.)
Oh, I get you. Why today? Why so much? Having traded stocks for many decades, my observation is that sometimes today is the day for something that’s been coming for a while and is an accumulation of reasons.

Or IOW, we all want a “it’s because of this one thing…”, and sometimes it is, but especially in this case it’s probably been coming for a multitude of complex reasons. Doesn’t matter, INTL is down, deal with reality and move in. Knowing why won’t fix your portfolio. :-)

This isn’t one trader buying INTL at a 29% discount. But thanks, Claude(?) for the explainer of the basics of markets, I guess.
The discussion was availability of spare parts, not reliability. And has already been brought up, reliability won't save you from needing parts when someone plows into your rear bumper. Or when suspension parts fail, which they do on every car.
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Thursday October 29, 2026 @05:22PM (#50296218)
One of my few brushes with fame was when I was in Nevada City, CA for a job interview some twenty years ago. Coming from Seattle, we got there a few days early. Came from the airport, parked and got some coffee, started walking around. Walking down the sidewalk, I see a middle-aged bald guy in a $COLLEGE sweatshirt talking to some folks. Sure enough it is Patrick Stewart, just hanging out. Apparently there was a film festival in town, and he was there to do $SOMETHING I've since forgotten.

I didn't bother him, as much as we both wanted to (he looked busy), what struck me was how casual Sir Patrick Stewart was in his faded sweatshirt talking to some awestruck kid and his mom.

Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:53PM (#50295762)
We coincidentally watched that one just last night, The Booby Trap. There's a derelict ship on the view screen reminding the crew that the other crew never figured out a solution to the problem, and there's no indication that the Enterprise crew won't suffer the same fate.

(That one, at least, has Geordi literally saying, "that's impossible", but comes up with a solution. Apologies if that's not the one you're thinking of.)

Re:Amazon to buy satellite firm Globalstar in $11.57B deal on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @10:06AM (#50273813)
It lives on while its 90’s cohort Iridium didn’t make it.

Garmin inReach users will be disappointed to hear that: “inReach devices use the Iridium satellite constellation, which forms a mesh with 100% globe coverage.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garmin_inReach

About a third took the last buyout offer.
Gotta read the link:

“Eligible employees will receive an email with a link to their Voluntary Exit Offer details within the next few hours.”

Every time there’s a football game? At least that I’m hearing in the case of Spain. No, they don’t throw a switch, but they turn off enough CDNs to effectively turn off the internet.

Again, no personal experience, but have heard enough from folks here to believe it.

I don't see a single TV listed.
Works on latest desktop Safari, macOS 26.7.1 on M5 MBP.
Re:Show HN: Making a smart TV dumb and then smart on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:25AM (#50209617)
That doesn’t preclude plugging an Apple TV into HDMI1. If it does, then back in the box it goes.
Re:Show HN: Making a smart TV dumb and then smart on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:22AM (#50209575)
A quick search shows…

I’ve noticed that very few people recommending signage displays as a substitute for a traditional TV ever say, “here’s the one I bought…”

That’s because one will quickly discover that signage displays aren’t very good TVs.

Second time in as many days that I’ve seen someone use that quote without any apparent understanding of the topic at hand nor what they’re copy-pasting.
Yes, because courts are made of stupid people who won’t see right through this. IANAL, but from what I read, “well, technically…” often does not amuse a judge.
Re: on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @04:09PM (#50171957)
Sometimes I wonder if the recruitment process has become a way for HR and HM to appear busy rather than actually hire people?

My rule of thumb is: if your company has <=50 employees, and there’s a VP/Director of HR, your life as a hiring manager will be miserable. “What happened to candidate X? The team gave them a ‘hire’.”

“Still checking references”, or some such bullshit as an excuse for dragging feet. “What do you do all day?”

Re: on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @04:05PM (#50171912)
Can confirm. And what a poor-quality submission: couldn’t be bothered to link directly to the Reddit post? Oh, right, that post no longer exists.
Doesn’t that line go down if I buy a TV at cost or below, and they never see further revenue because the TV sends nary so much as a byte to the mothership?
Look for commercial digital signage displays.

People say that while forgetting to mention that you will spend multiples more money for a lower quality viewing experience. Oh, sure, it might be 4K but it won’t have HDR and the like.

Take the subsidized TV and don’t let it anywhere near a network connection. Throw an Apple TV in front of it for streaming.

Re:Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @12:39PM (#50169039)
What a stupid (and unnecessarily ad hominem) take. OP’s salary very much depends on understanding when their company produces crap.
"brake dust"? On an EV? Do you have any idea how long brake pads last on a hybrid (hint: a long time)? Now, for the same reasons, imagine how long the pads last on a pure EV. I expect the pads on our Hyundai Ioniq 5 to outlast me. (Granted, I'm retirement age.)

I'm not even going to address tire dust. That's just people looking for an EV-related pearl to clutch.

Re:AI companies are coming for the plumbers on Monday October 19, 2026 @12:29PM (#50154408)
Self-driving is a great parallel. Whereas the tricky part of self-driving are the edge cases, maybe 5% of what the car needs to handle. What DIY plumbing I've done tells me is that plumbing is just about nothing but edge cases, with 5% being standard stuff that an LLM might be able to handle.
Look at their profile. “Public sector software”. I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions, and any relation to the topic of TFA.
