Re:How Google’s Web Crawler Bypasses Paywalls on Friday February 19, 2016 @05:22PM (#11137126)
This is what I do.

I actually made a bookmarklet with the following pasted into the URL, so you can do it in a single click:

javascript:void(open('https://archive.is/?run=1&url='+encodeURIComponent(document....)

Forbes website shows a blank page if you are using adblockers or noscript or some other extensions.

Open the link in an incognito window and it will work.

When you are learning C++ at that kind of speed its natural that you will have to lubricate yourself to reduce risk of injury

+1 for DataTau, I didn't know about that.

Check out this too: http://www.pyquantnews.com/

Less detail than I hoped but a lot of sources.

Be wary of tCDS - no long term studies. Also 'no such thing as a free lunch' - see gwern : http://www.gwern.net/Drug%20heuristics

The right wing news sources I read made it look bulletproof that she was manipulating things and would lose. I didn't even read the tech news as SV has a crazy liberal bias. Steve sailer had nailed a good analysis right from the start I believe

Re:Letter From A Psychopath on Friday December 20, 2013 @05:17PM (#6944465)
Thanks for all your insight here in this thread. I went through all this myself and haven't really been able to talk about it. Its reassuring to see others have been through the same. My psychopath convinced everyone I had psychosis when I questioned her once. I refused to believe something that I saw her do was a 'hallucination'. For months I was gaslighted by everyone I knew. I would think I was in the clear and then a friend would call me up at work out of the blue, asking if they can take me to accident and emergency. I had 9 months depression and am only now getting out of it.

It is insane how memories can be overwritten. I can write at length on this, I learnt it from videoing her talking to me. They have total frame control and will keep switching subjects away from facts.

I never confronted her to tell her that I knew who she was, but she did warn me indirectly. She showed the 'psychopath face', if that means anything to anyone...

Nice.

Finally somebody I can get behind; we need to get this guy into office.

Does anyone know of any other examples of if-by-whiskey being used today?

Is it useful for politicians or would it completely backfire, where any opposition would try to say "You are quoted as being pro-alcohol: calling it the philosophic wine" or "anti-alcohol, calling it the devil's brew" and pick the paragraph that suits their needs?

Re:Google Glass to Hit Developers' Hands This Month on Wednesday January 16, 2013 @08:48AM (#5066729)
Is it possible to stream from the glasses?

If so then a criminal would be deincentivised to murder a witness wearing the glasses - as everything they have seen is already online.

Of course it would take a few years of people getting shot by criminals who don't understand the technology before we get to that stage...

Half the front page of today's The Times in the UK is a picture of Zuckerberg. Though I think it might be more to do with giving the paper a "we're down with tech" image.

He appears to work at discus - did he use admin powers to comment on the article?

Its numbing how you don't realise how much somebody on the other side of the world has affected your life until you find out until something tragic enough happens to them that it makes the news...

Goddamnit, have some sensitivity, he only just died and many people on here know him personally.

If this is a troll then why don't you go reevaluate your priorities in life? Take some magic mushrooms and think about how your actions alter the world.

Even if the topic is not something you care about the techniques and methods gwern uses are not often talked about here and useful for a variety of text processing tasks.

His methodical analysis and scientific rigor is always what I wish other posts could have. If nothing this is a post which will motivate others to write better.

The cluster analysis is cool - not seen that before. Wonder what the results of Latent Dirichlet Allocation might have gotten...

You should honestly consider learning some basic tailoring. I'm starting it myself - I buy 'vintage' clothes from charity shops and most wouldn't fit.

Buy a decent antique sewing machine if you want a cheap one.

Its a sufficiently rare but useful skill to make good conversation too. And you can vastly increase the perceived value of your clothes by claiming they are hand tailored! ;)

Here is a good forum to pick up knowledge: http://www.cutterandtailor.com/forum/index.php?showforum=26

Just wanted to say thanks for this great post. I've not heard this viewpoint and now need to swot up on it. Glad there are optimists wrt the possible impending class divide.
Re:Eric Schmidt: How We Outrace the Robots on Thursday December 13, 2012 @05:59AM (#4915235)
We are at a stage now where its becoming easier to automate medium difficulty tasks (things like general office paper work - the lower-end white collar jobs) but we cant automate some 'easier' 'blue-collar' things like cleaning toilets and laying roof tiles - as its cheaper to get a low-class worker to do it than create a robot.

The middle class are the ones who are going to feel the heat over the next century. The smartest humans will not need to worry until a true singularity begins, really.

I'm so glad somebody else remembers that.

It was years after the game came out, and was perhaps just a side-note in the videogames magazines, meaning that nobody believed my childhood self when I claimed to finally obtain the eggs.

How does prismatic actually use NLP for finding articles you like? Does it use sentiment analysis of reviews from people it thinks are similar to you?

Btw I think "subreddits on steroids" is an incredible testimonial catchphrase - it would have been enough for me to buy your app, but I don't own a smartphone.

Can you think of any good ways of finding these niches and things within them? How did your friend find his?

I guess you need to make friends in 'hard' industries and talk to them a lot? There are also meetups for "unsexy startups" starting to pop up.
