America first. The Netherlands, second?
> Does anyone really think the Trump admin wouldn't consider seizing foreign gold reserves as part of such a move?

There has to be an adult in the room there to tell them this is a really bad idea. I mean I didn't think Putin would invade Ukraine so my track record is iffy but there's a reason the Belgians refuse to use Russian frozen assets - no one would ever put money there ever again. That'd be the end of their banking sector basically.

Where does it end though? The most optimistic (or pessimistic, depending on your viewpoint) say that AI will be able to replace or displace lots of professions. Is there enough work for everyone? Is there enough meaningful work for everyone? A software engineer or accountant making ~150k a year will find another job that pays less, so he will also pay less taxes. What's going to happen in the short term, inbetween this shift? A bunch of unhappy unemployed people leaning on social systems. That seems pretty devastating. Who is going to come out as winners?
The crux of this entire issue surrounding replacing people with agents, is that agents should pay taxes. If we're losing people that pay taxes our social safety nets will crumble. Maybe that makes the math more in favor of actually using humans too.
Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026) on Monday July 13, 2026 @03:01PM (#48897194)
I've had a lot of side projects but I'm finally actually finishing some, and it's sort of useful so that's fun. Wanted to make it easy to see the difference between the Xbox Gamepass tiers, maybe you only need essential or premium - saving a few bucks. With Claude it's been pretty fun to add new features. Since there's no API for Leaving Soon I built a scraper, content gets parsed through an LLM call and matched to games. There's a swipe mechanism to favorite or trash games, so you comparison doesn't get cluttered up by fifa's or cod's. It's just been a fun playground, I host it on https://gamepass.fyi
Re:I love LLMs, I hate hype on Sunday July 12, 2026 @04:18PM (#48884341)
I'm guilty of creating a fork that just goes off the rails, but still needs to keep up with upstream. I do it via a skill and seems to work good enough for now: https://github.com/midasvo/findroid-ce/tree/main/.claude/ski...
I pay for games because it's more convenient than pirating them. For movies and tv however... They make it so difficult to be a customer.
Re:Show HN: HackerNows – Native iOS HN Client on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @08:50AM (#48745874)
This looks fine to me? In long threads it gets a bit hard to follow, only thing I'm missing is a jump to next root comment. https://i.imgur.com/8e1Syyf.jpeg
You also don't really need LLM's, we still have software engineers too. Everyone is focusing so heavily on the speed gain producing code, but in my experience clients of established products aren't really waiting for massive changes and gigantic features to be added. We aren't taking the time to think things through anymore.
Re:U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6 on Friday June 26, 2026 @04:39PM (#48691696)
So as a European, I'm being blocked from all new models apparently. I'm a big fan of using Claude Code for my sideprojects and for those I don't really care about sharing context. Is there aything that comes close to Claude Code and is still affordable?
I think the comparison TikTok and Philip Morris tracks. Both spent insane amounts of money and talent optimizing the bad choices the addict could make.
We made that world. There are very smart people who spent their talent making the most addictive social media as possible.

Here it is, the true hacker mentality.
Re:AI agent runs amok in Fedora and elsewhere on Thursday June 11, 2026 @03:17AM (#48487309)
Same - but mine are open source in the sense that they're public on my own Forgejo instance. So no one's gonna bother with em, but technically they are open source.

One exception: I was using an opensource Jellyfin client called findroid but the maintainer had been busy for a long time so a lot of features I wanted had stale PR's. Instead of bugging him I forked & renamed the project and together with Claude built in all the features I personally needed. Just keeping up with upstream now and enjoying my enhanced app. Once the initial dev gets those features in I might switch back. Claude made this really easy. If the maintainer wants my code he's free to take it. Here's the repo https://github.com/midasvo/findroid-ce

I actually got an email from someone who was using it who found a pretty bad bug I hadn't encountered yet and I quickly fixed it. All that time I was still under the impression I was the only user haha.

Great news. Would have been devastating to have such an integral part of our society at the whims of not just another nation, but an unstable and downright hostile one.
Re:Claude.ai unavailable and elevated errors on the API on Tuesday April 28, 2026 @04:05PM (#47939913)
It's genuinely hilarious how the same leadership pushing for RTO because getting people together creates magic, seems to have no issues trading those same people out for LLM's churning at specs.
Re:Ghostty is leaving GitHub on Tuesday April 28, 2026 @04:01PM (#47939867)
n=1 but i don't really discover new projects via github, it's mainly here, reddit, or via colleagues. then again, i selfhost forgejo so don't have a real presence on github
Re:Moving from GitHub to Codeberg, for lazy people on Thursday March 26, 2026 @11:46AM (#47531929)
Same - also installed a forgejo runner via docker so i've got CI. Forgejo has it's own artifactory/registry so the apps I make get a docker image and I just run that docker image. All on my own hardware.
Re:Updates to GitHub Copilot interaction data usage policy on Wednesday March 25, 2026 @05:03PM (#47523224)
I'm in my happy space selfhosting forgejo and having a runner on my own hardware
Re:Claude Code Cheat Sheet on Tuesday March 24, 2026 @03:21AM (#47499501)
It's just abhorrently slow, it does a lot but I always thouhgt TUI were fast but the amount of times it doesn't register my input is way too much.
Re:A sufficiently detailed spec is code on Thursday March 19, 2026 @04:00AM (#47436250)
This and the idea of creating some sort of english-adjacent programming language for LLM's is fun, I guess, but what problem is it solving. Do we really need to go an abstraction higher?

Genuinely, from outside, it seems like your government doesn't give a damn on what they are and aren't allowed to do.

Re:Claude Code gets native LSP support on Tuesday December 23, 2025 @07:10AM (#46364660)
To be fair, VS Code git implementation is really off-putting if you've used something good.
Re:We should all be using dependency cooldowns on Friday November 21, 2025 @12:04PM (#46006298)
Renovate (dependabot equiv I think) creates PRs, I usually walk through them every morning or when there's a bit of downtime. Playing with the idea to automerge patches and maybe even minor updates but up until now it's not that hard to keep up.
Re:ChatGPT Atlas on Wednesday October 22, 2025 @07:01AM (#45667312)
My dad uses Gemini because it's the default thingy on his android phone - I asked him if he used ChatGPT and he said yes and navigated to Gemini. Most people really don't care that much I think.

Quitting smoking was the best decision I made and I wish I did it earlier. If you feel ready Allen Carr's book worked for me. I wasted so much time smoking.
Re:Charlie Kirk shot at event in Utah on Thursday September 11, 2025 @06:33AM (#45209925)
It's a bit odd to claim both sides do something but not elaborate when asked for more info. Seems disingenuous.
Being based in Europa is a massive USP for European companies - the USA being harder and harder to trust each day. It's difficult to build business on shaky ground.
Re:ASML, Mistral AI enter strategic partnership on Tuesday September 09, 2025 @06:48AM (#45180229)
There's no way to catch up really - if they keep innovating like they are it's not possible to bridge that gap.
