Re:Palantir founder purchases large swath of forest in Sweden on Monday September 28, 2026 @05:04PM (#49884308)
Assuming this is for conservation, it's hard to find reasons this is a bad thing.
This is why datacenters in central texas are desperate to build anywhere in the edwards aquifer... so they can get "free" water from natural springs (already stressed by draught) and dump the effluent into city wastewater systems.
Re:Meshtastic on Saturday November 29, 2025 @08:18PM (#46092577)
This community is laughably caustic and abusive. My friend attempted to create a simple tutorial site and their org harassed him for over a year. He didn't even mention the word "meshtastic" and they made dozens of false trademark claims that his site could be "confused" with an official site.

I was previously a fan, but I'd never seen behavior like that from an "open source" project.

Hmm, I can copy paste just fine from the build page?
I can't wait for blower 3090s from China / MSI to get cheap (although I fear this may never happen)
Yeah, but the B60 is basically half the speed of a 3090... in 2025. I'd rather buy 5yr old nVidia hardware for $100 more on eBay than an intel product with horrendous software support that's half the speed effectively. This build is so cool because the 2x 3090 setup is still maybe the best option 5yrs+ after the GPU was released by nVidia.
Re:High-performance read-through cache for object storage on Saturday September 20, 2025 @11:39AM (#45314277)
s2 is one of the coolest technologies that more people need to be talking about - I'm still begging them to move one layer lower -> turning s2 into an incredible middleware for edge IOT deployments!

PLEASE if someone from the team sees this - I would pay so much for a ephemeral object store using your same edge protocol (seen in the sensor example from your blog).

Cheers!

Re:FFglitch, FFmpeg fork for glitch arch on Tuesday September 16, 2025 @11:13AM (#45263424)
Is there any way to use this in conjunction with a mask overlay filter in ffmpeg if I just want to "glitch" part of a video?
Re:Evidence that AI is destroying jobs for young people on Wednesday September 03, 2025 @10:28PM (#45122835)
30% fraudulent H1b, TN, and PERM visa mills (predominantly from india).
Re:Evidence that AI is destroying jobs for young people on Wednesday September 03, 2025 @10:18PM (#45122778)
H1B visas are clearly a massive factor. Well before AI.
Re:Passkeys and Modern Authentication on Wednesday September 03, 2025 @10:17PM (#45122767)
I honestly have no understanding of why people thought passkeys really improved anything... Why would I want to give a massive tech company the ability to usurp ALL of my accounts under the guise of being "more secure".
I'm a fan of SpaceX but after his christmas eve crash out over hating americans / his general procedure for running a company I have zero-idea why anyone would want to work for Elon... For any amount of money.
Re:40% of daily code written at Coinbase is AI-generated on Wednesday September 03, 2025 @10:08PM (#45122705)
This is... deeply troubling for a crypto exchange...
It's a US company - tell the UK to pound sand if they think they're going to tell businesses here how to operate because they want to run the UK like a draconian hell-hole.
Re:I Run a Full Linux Desktop in Docker Just Because I Can on Friday August 22, 2025 @10:27PM (#44992500)
What's the best way to forward the x-server over ssh?
Re:370k Grok AI chats made public without user consent on Wednesday August 20, 2025 @10:15AM (#44962181)
Has anyone figured out the google Dork to source these?
It's starting to hit product management and sales roles.
It's precisely this. Trump is allowing one of the last vestiges of the American middle class to be outsourced to India. Just like Clinton allowed the same to happen with factory jobs to China.

As a person of color this is even more detestable.

There have never been more unemployed new college grads studying computer science and computer engineering. There are ample americans ready to take these jobs.

Boomers promulgated lies about "shortages" for years to lobby for relaxed visa schemes. Ironic you mention nationalism being silly, since Indians are some of the most openly caustic nationalists I encounter on a daily basis.

Have you seen the state of the river Ganges / any river in a developing nation?

Not to mention how the amazon rainforest is just burned down to clear space for palm oil plantations?

I couldn't agree more! Canada has massive potential, albeit also large issues with their immigration system being gamed.

In my opinion, outsourcing is a larger evil. The money used to pay the salaries of outsourced engineers should be taxed at-least at 20% (along with remittances to India) akin to what we currently penalize foreign countries for maliciously suppressing the cost of physical goods. This is called Countervailing Duty or Anti Dumping Duty penalties.

I've reached my limit with the entitlement of these people in the united states. Especially systematically excluding americans or non-indians once they reach a hiring level / role.

There's a reason most people you run into SF are either here on O1 or h1b visas these days...

Time to cull the waterloo crowd and maybe think twice about cheap outsourcing to latam and india.

This is an exemplary reason to not work for a startup.

Cash is king - never work for free or let some overzealous founder (who has tons of equity and is ok working for poverty wages) try to encourage you to work longer or harder "because equity go up one day".

The founders of Windsurf are clearly horrible people and the fact they were DM'ing people on twitter trying to explain being awful people really reflects the current state of the valley.

Garry Tan even deleted a comment on this tweet where to Windsurf employee #2 he said "looks like you left $20M on the table". These people see employees as replaceable widgets and to them this is just a game build around the "excitement of building".

Legitimately F*CK these people.

Gambling is degenerate and not something that should be legal. Gen Z is especially vulnerable.
Re:H-1B program grew 81 percent from 2011 to 2022 on Sunday July 20, 2025 @10:25PM (#44631246)
As a person of color who prides themselves on not treating anyone based on their skin color or culture this kind of flagrant racism is insane. I frankly feel for my caucasian colleagues because for some reason subcontinental h1bs have a special ire for them.

It's un-american and again - strikingly disgusting

Re:H-1B program grew 81 percent from 2011 to 2022 on Friday July 18, 2025 @04:47PM (#44609663)
The issue is endemic and I've seen it at companies I've worked at. Indian hiring managers have distinct obvious biases to only hire other Indians.

This is blindingly obvious if you look at the share of h1b visas that indians account for (a vast majority).

The jokes really do write themselves "Extraordinary Podcasting Ability".

Would much rather that visa had gone to a researcher or engineer who's motto wasn't "not wanting to push pixels around at a FAANG".

Yep, I would've voted for Bernie and it's important for the greater population to understand that Trump and the GOP have basically done nothing to curb abuse of the LEGAL immigration system. Elon and Big Tech WANTS Trump to import infinity foreign labor to continue driving wages and opportunity down for American tech workers.

The fact that only a 3.5% remittance tax on non-digital payments was barely implemented is pathetic.

Yeah. Time to do something else.
Re:Section 174 is reversed! Mostly, that is. on Friday July 18, 2025 @03:40PM (#44608957)
Watch them increase the H1b cap after this "win"...
