there are so many places to read about what stratechery writes about. Why pay, if it will become like any other free column? Canceled my subscription.

The counterfactual is impossible to prove here, but I think it’s at least plausible that this poster, who I guess lives near the beach, could have enjoyed their morning coffee on the beach

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Thursday October 22, 2026 @09:01AM (#50194744)
Sorry, I was talking about individual people, because you said “ we do symbolic things that do not matter”. Who is “we?” The Chinese engineers working on solar aren’t the same people working on coal.

Anyway, to your point here, I agree. But China is pivoting their entire economy, and that takes time. Obviously I hope all countries move faster, and undoubtedly it’s possible to move faster, so I do the best I can to help as one person

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:01AM (#50180211)
without hyperbole, literally tens of millions of people are working on decarbonizing these countries. the solar energy industry in just China alone is 4.2 million people
Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:57AM (#50180155)
I agree with this advice.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are several “climate tech” companies that abandoned the mission as soon as they raise a Series B

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:55AM (#50180104)
I applaud you for considering a change. However, you’re talking about making two career pivots at once, and I would suggest doing one at a time - i.e. either keep coding in clean energy, or do something other than coding, but not both. It’s hard to pivot.

If you want to be a senior SWE in clean energy, the Climatebase rec is good, or https://www.terra.do/, or subscribe to a newsletter like https://www.ctvc.co/tag/newsletter/ that announces when climate tech companies raise money (at the bottom of each newsletter), and apply to open roles at those companies when they start looking to spend their new money, usually ~1-3 months later.

Do you think they are actually shipping anything useful any faster? Muse is pretty impressive. I’m not seeing radical progress otherwise

> thieves buying

Are you willing to elaborate? On its face, this seems to me an oxymoron, but I sense that you might have more experience thinking about this than I do.

Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @09:23AM (#50056111)
From the linked email thread with discussion:

> I would like to float another ideas around even if it would be hard to enforce in practice. Force AI companies to give back. Want to use Claude code? Sure but anthropic have to become a sustaining member of QGIS.org first. Want to use codex, gemini? Then openAi and Google have to contribute to the project financially and I'm talking geniully multiple thousands dollars contributions.

I think this is a really good idea. Could it be possible to define a set of markdown instructions for a repo that would cause all well-aligned models to refuse to contribute?

Re:Meta and Microsoft Limit Employee Use of Claude AI Tools on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @11:40PM (#50001642)
There are a couple people I know who actually clearly ship faster with AI, but most projects take just as long as ever
Then a new model comes out two weeks later and finds a hole that your archaic review bot missed

I think it’s harsh to publicly describe your wife as neurotic for following basic etiquette

People have had parties in parents basements, tenements, city parks, open fields, caves, for all of human history
Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:06AM (#49892565)
The chart cutting off in 2022 makes it hard to glean too much.

I no longer worry at all about attending a crowded indoor gathering - those would be impossible to avoid in NYC - but enjoying “a night in” without kids is a distinctly post-COVID phenomenon for myself and many people I know

Plenty of people want ads. Every time someone asks “hey ChatGPT what do I need to buy to fix my sink” or “hey Claude what’s the best cat food” or “what’s the best island in the Caribbean for me to visit” they are specifically asking to see an ad.
The ads are the product that people are paying for. “Consumer” AI is currently marketed as agents that book restaurants for you, buy cat food before you run out, organize your travel, etc. etc. These are targeted ads for a particular restaurant, pet store, airline, etc. Some people find this desirable.

The economic article is a summary of a preprint paper that surveyed thousands of Americans. Seems like a research paper to me, but I don’t know economics well. Am I missing something?

My mistake on vaccine vs. cure. so have AI make a cure instead
Re:Everyone should slow down AI development except for me on Sunday September 13, 2026 @02:53AM (#49680800)
Shipbuilding is but one proxy for China’s dominance in industrialization. A more relevant one for AI is: China has built more energy capacity in the last 4 years than the USA has built in the last 150. AI is increasingly limited by power. For this and other reasons, IMO the US will inevitably be surpassed on AI.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-01-28/china-s-f...

“It’s too late” is a logistical issue IMO. In this article, virus production is totally decentralized and fast, but vaccine production is centralized and slow. Why?
The author scoffing at the climate scientist is so cringe
So somehow AI is able to magically create 100 lethal viruses with no logistical issues but is not able to make a cure due to logistical issues?

what would such proof look like? It's not like allegations are written in Lean
Re:Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf] on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @12:17AM (#49620910)
well they didn't really die on the hill. the NYT headline is still "OpenAI says it has cracked one of math's millennium problems" and the whole article doesn't mention this controversy. Normies don't know what NS is and don't care, they'll just see "wow OpenAI is the best I guess"

IMO this link proves the poster’s point. We are passing 1-2 laws a week. So far the 119th congress has passed 104 laws

100 years ago, the 69th congress passed over 1500 laws, plus hundreds of continuing resolutions, treaties, etc https://www.loc.gov/collections/united-states-statutes-at-la...

Re:Half-Baked Product on Friday July 03, 2026 @12:37PM (#48776960)
from my friends in sales, sales perspective could be: going from meeting to meeting just getting yelled at.

- previous customer yells at you for not delivering required features. You ask the engineer about the status of that feature

- engineers write a manifesto on #general complaining about you for asking them about the status of the new feature

- PM calls you in to yell at you for trying to jump the roadmap

- you start prepping for weekly call with the CEO. at least doubled your numbers this quarter!

- while you're prepping you get a response to one of your cold emails from the day prior, someone calling you "gauche" and "annoying"

- go into CEO meeting. CEO yells at you for being 80% under the quota, because the psychotic quota was set to 10x last year's numbers.

- long day! go home. husband yells at you for working late

etc.

That sounds super awesome, but I think college students are always going to find a way to shirk work. For example, in your proposal, plenty of college students would just get another AI to talk to the test administration AI (think Cluely)
Deleted my Instagram account. This should be a bigger international story, but most people outside HN won’t hear about it and won’t understand why this is such a big deal
