I would think they'd be more interested in tangible assets.

They're cost effective and environmentally friendly, however dropping one on the floor of a public restroom is quite the faux pas.
Re:How to Break Out of the 'Female Entrepreneur' Trap on Tuesday February 26, 2013 @02:21PM (#5287776)
Wasn't aware the two were distinct.

Awkwaaaard.
Re:Bullying has to stop, now. on Tuesday February 26, 2013 @09:40AM (#5285791)
I think its pretty common that when students are divided by "ability", especially later on in middle or high school, it can weigh pretty heavily on the students in the "lower ability" classes. Its essentially saying "we don't expect much but you need to be here."

This system works out very well for bright, academically inclined students, sure. But it sets a structure of expectations that don't motivate what could possibly be great talent, but we wouldn't know because they didn't bubble in the right answer.

Re:Sexism In Tech: We’re Not Making It Up on Monday February 25, 2013 @02:08PM (#5280958)
It would be entirely fair to say that sexism is also on the decline, I don't dispute that. For example, my father can no longer sell me for 3 goats (without my consent, of course). But this doesn't make it a non-issue, just as violence is not a non-issue. Just because a program is throwing out fewer errors doesn't mean its fixed.
Re:Sexism In Tech: We’re Not Making It Up on Monday February 25, 2013 @01:43PM (#5280772)
If only there were some sort of world wide network of information where women could write about their experiences and share them with total strangers. I guess we'll have to leave it up to the occult for now.
Re:The Saddest Map In America on Thursday February 21, 2013 @05:09PM (#5260830)
Rhode Island always keeps it classy. Though I'm honestly surprised it wasn't Dunkin Donuts.
Re:Google Glass - If I Had Glass on Wednesday February 20, 2013 @11:17AM (#5251258)
Its only a matter of time before someone decides to upload videos of people rejecting them at bars with accompanying "woe is me" commentary and resulting subreddit.
Re:Psilocybin shows success in medical trials on Wednesday February 13, 2013 @05:13PM (#5216036)
No need, you can float :)
Re:Hack of The Sexes on Monday February 11, 2013 @05:50PM (#5203916)
Its like you took the words out of my fingers.
Not so much Devil's Advocate as bringing up a valid point. Most if not all social struggles are intersectional.
Re:Facebook Isn't Worth It on Tuesday January 29, 2013 @10:12AM (#5134381)
I think its a bit unfair to compare our parents generation (boomers) to ours (millennials, arguably).

The first thing that comes to mind is that, at least in my social circle, no one has a land line. We move a lot. We change cell phone numbers (carrier problems, relationship issues, who knows).

Its arguable that a FB presence is actually more stable than a physical presence for some social groups. Its not an all encompassing solution for human interaction by any means, but "worth it" is a very subjective term.

Re:Fuck it, I'll Do This Alone on Friday January 25, 2013 @11:44AM (#5116296)
I'm the opposite. I can eat at a nice restaurant alone and enjoy my thoughts and not think twice about it. When I see someone else eating alone, my heart breaks and I contemplate asking them if they would like company.

Yes, but its the anomalies that are most likely worth meeting up with ;)
Re:Petition To Fire Aaron Swartz’ Prosecutor Reaches Goal on Tuesday January 15, 2013 @03:29PM (#5062769)
Not that I agree with Bradley Mannings punishment, but I think a key difference is that he was not a civilian.
Re:OK Cupid launches Crazy Blind Date on Tuesday January 15, 2013 @02:33PM (#5062378)
My favorites are the "mens rights activists" who completely shit on women, complain about how "nice" they are, wear ill fitting fedoras, and then wonder why no one responds :)

There have to be normal people on OKC somewhere, right? ...right?

Re:OK Cupid launches Crazy Blind Date on Tuesday January 15, 2013 @01:21PM (#5061800)
Honestly it depends. Personally, I don't engage with people who want children because thats just an inevitable nail in the coffin. Everyone has their own red flags, there's no science to it really.

I only get roughly 1 response for every 7 messages I send, so clearly I'm not the only picky one, and its not just the ladies holding out ;)

Re:OK Cupid launches Crazy Blind Date on Tuesday January 15, 2013 @11:26AM (#5060983)
You would be surprised. As a female who occasionally uses OKC to meet people, I've had the joy of being offered a price. Straight up.

And yes, it was too low.

When you see "replies selectively", go for it. We're not the trolls. We're the eyerollers waiting for an actual conversation starter.

Re:Adobe almost does something amazing by accident on Wednesday January 09, 2013 @03:17PM (#5033243)
I was optimistic when I learned that GIMP would open .psd files. Then I noticed the distinct lack of a slice tool. Googling found me no useable alternatives other than "crop, save, and ctrl+z".

May be trivial for those who don't work on front end development, but a huge selling point for Adobe.

Re:DowncityJS - Providence, RI JavaScript Hackathon – Feb 2 on Monday January 07, 2013 @01:14PM (#5022282)
I plan on going with a coworker or two. I'll be the girl with a half shaved head and circuit board plugs, come say hi! (Though this is Providence, I may need to be more specific ;])
Re:DowncityJS - Providence, RI JavaScript Hackathon – Feb 2 on Monday January 07, 2013 @12:08PM (#5021947)
Sweet. It said Betaspring on the EventBrite page, but I didn't see an address anywhere. Not that I'm above wandering around downcity following people with laptop bags ;)
Re:DowncityJS - Providence, RI JavaScript Hackathon – Feb 2 on Monday January 07, 2013 @12:07PM (#5021941)
Thanks!
Re:DowncityJS - Providence, RI JavaScript Hackathon – Feb 2 on Monday January 07, 2013 @12:01PM (#5021910)
Wow, something happening in Providence! I can't help but notice the site doesn't list an actual location, does anyone know where this is taking place?
This post is actually better than most. Granted its only been an hour.

Its fair to point out that going out of your way to get a female speaker simply because she is female is not the way to go about things. I don't think this is what the article is proposing so much as making a valiant effort to have a more diverse panel.

Frankly, to all out boycott all male panels seems counter productive and a bit extreme. Some conferences have an open call for presenters, and sometimes women just don't apply. At what point is that the fault of the organizer? I can see invitations posing an issue, but not all conferences operate that way.

Re:A New Look for Facebook on Thursday January 03, 2013 @04:41PM (#5004859)
Aside from the obvious "this looks like the new myspace and windows 8 mashed together", I would be curious to see how this concept would fare with what people ACTUALLY post to Facebook. People with no concept of image quality or resolution. People I call my friends :)
Re:What Is It Like To Be an Adult and Not Have Kids? on Friday December 28, 2012 @03:54PM (#4979485)
Children, like puppies, also don't stay that way forever. I hate this idea that children don't grow up into flawed, possibly terrible people on occasion. No love is "invincible".
Re:xkcd: Instagram on Friday December 21, 2012 @10:07AM (#4952907)
They mine purchase data. Any store with a "customer rewards" card does as well.
Re:How to Download Your Instagram Photos and Kill Your Account on Tuesday December 18, 2012 @04:57PM (#4939820)
They should. I recently switched from a Droid X running Gingerbread to a newer Android phone, and it was super easy to grab all of my instagram photos (and everything else, really) out of the files directory.
I have the same concern, but having no family medical history (closed adoption) makes the new price point rather tempting, despite the inevitable anxiety.
