I get what they're saying here, but given the fact that the UI is almost an exact ripoff of OSX, it's a little hard to take it seriously. "Give us money for building this OSX ripoff, we deserve it." I agree that people should be paid for their work, but I also have a problem with asking for money for stolen ideas.

>On some planet having U6 go from above 17% to just over 11% from 2009 to the present counts as "failed recovery" but I'm not quite sure how.

Agreed. I argue this point all the time, actually. I think it's interesting to go back through and look at how unemployment fairs in comparison to the political party of the president during that time. Looking at the U3 rate for the past 50 years, unemployment has only gone down once under a republican president (Reagan) and Carter is the only democrat in the past 50 years who didn't see unemployment drop from the time he took office to the time that he left office.

Can you share any information about people taking the same job for less pay? I haven't seen evidence of this, but I don't doubt that it's happening in some places. I'll admit that I live in sort of a bubble because my salary has doubled since 2008 and the salaries of many of my friends and family have grown quite a bit as well. Granted, most of the people I know work in some sort of tech-related field.
Re:The Big Lie: 5.6% Unemployment on Tuesday February 03, 2015 @01:48PM (#8992323)
I'm not sure how or why that became the standard, but it's the standard per the International Labour Organization. The U6 rate only started being recorded in 1994.
Re:The Big Lie: 5.6% Unemployment on Tuesday February 03, 2015 @01:24PM (#8992120)
The standard rate (U3) doesn't take underemployed or those who give up looking for work into account, but the U6 rate does. The U6 rate in January of 2009 was 14.2% and it is now down to 11.2% from its peak at 17.1% at the end of 2009/early 2010. Is the economy still struggling? Sure. Is unemployment headed in the right direction? Absolutely.

Edit: One thing that people commonly like to do is compare the U6 rate to the U3 rates of the past. "Unemployment isn't 5.6%, it's really closer to 12% ..." That's foolish because it's an apples to oranges comparison. Yes 11.2% is high unemployment, but what we judge as the low/satisfactory unemployment rate would come in somewhere around 7-7.5% when looking at the U6 rate -vs- the 4-4.5% that's considered low/satisfactory using the U3 rate.

Source: http://portalseven.com/employment/unemployment_rate_u6.jsp

"The U6 unemployment rate counts not only people without work seeking full-time employment (the more familiar U-3 rate), but also counts "marginally attached workers and those working part-time for economic reasons." Note that some of these part-time workers counted as employed by U-3 could be working as little as an hour a week. And the "marginally attached workers" include those who have gotten discouraged and stopped looking, but still want to work. The age considered for this calculation is 16 years and over."

Re:Ask HN: Are Internet speed tests accurate? on Monday January 19, 2015 @10:08AM (#8912188)
The accuracy can vary, but for the most part I've found them to display results that are right in line with what ISPs quote their speeds to be. Ookla explains the way that their speed tests work here -https://support.speedtest.net/hc/en-us/articles/203845400-Ho... and that's the idea behind all of them.

Probably the most inaccurate representation of speed that I've come across was when I had just done a firewall replacement for a customer and I didn't catch that their ISP had the speed/duplex settings on their equipment set to a hard-coded 100/Full-duplex. The firewall that I installed was set to auto-negotiate and since the ISP's equipment was hard-coded, the firewall negotiated at 100/Half-duplex. If you're not familiar with what half-duplex means, basically it means that you can still send & receive data, but you can only do one at a time -vs- full-duplex where you can send and receive at the same time. The problem with a speed test is that the download test only downloads, and the upload test only uploads, so in the case of the duplex mismatch, the speed test looked fine. As soon as users came in the next morning and put the internet connection under load, they began complaining about internet speeds and we realized that we had a problem with the duplex settings.

Another way to test is a utility called iperf, but it's a lot more complicated and requires you to have access to the remote machine. - https://iperf.fr/

Holy shit I hope that the OP was posting that as satire.

"So for 3-6 downloads AD companies will pay you $1,000 via epcm !!!!!!!!" - Gotta be satire, right? Please be satire?

You're looking for a DNS host. Amazon's route 53 is a good choice.

Alternatively, you could use wildcard DNS and programmatically determine the host header value to direct the user to the correct place. For example, in PHP that information would be available by using $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'].

I'm in the same boat, although I'm a senior systems engineer. I had considered a move to a dev or devops type of role, but I can't stomach the pay cut to start back at the bottom. I wish I had some advice for you, but I'm really searching for the answer to the problem myself. I've got some personal projects that I'm working on, but between work and my 18-month old son, I don't get much time to do that sort of stuff. When I do have free time, I find myself wanting to spend that time with my family instead of sitting at a computer like I do most of the time already, and that's a pretty rough fight to have with myself.

It seems like this is sort of a "hail mary" for him. He's hoping to make $600K over the next 3 years and he's planning on spending a ton of money on ads.
Nice! It's funny, but I was just reading about a similar game being built, but this guy took 16 months and spent $58K building the app. Here's the post http://forums.makingmoneywithandroid.com/income-reports/1635... where he talks about it. His game isn't exactly the same, and definitely has a lot more going on, but there are some similarities for sure.
Re:How to Export Your Facebook Photos on Monday August 18, 2014 @06:28PM (#8195065)
Nice, thanks for sharing! This is something that has been on my todo list for a while, but for a different reason. My wife thought it would be a neat idea to create a facebook account for my infant son and then tag him in photos and videos so that he can go back and look at it when he's older. I'm not psychic, but something tells me that either facebook won't be around forever, that his account may get flagged someday for TOS violation (under 13, account not created by him), or that some of that data might eventually get lost. It'd be nice to automate this, but this will work great for now.
