Re:Ask HN: Dealing with too many browser tabs? on Friday March 15, 2019 @05:33AM (#19398048)
Seconded this. Been using it for as long as I can remember.

I'm one of those freak that easily have 50+ tab open when doing "research" on certain topic.

Re:On “Open” Distros, Open Source, and Building a Company on Wednesday March 13, 2019 @03:33AM (#19376506)
This response doesn't address why Netflix and Expedia Group is joining AWS open distro effort. Licensing is major headache for them I assumed.

Personally, as current and former administrator of multiple ES cluster, I'm quite worried how this "intermingling of open source and proprietary code" will affect my current and previous team. We certainly not aware of it before this week.

Re:Ecosia – the search engine that plants trees on Thursday March 07, 2019 @02:22AM (#19326176)
I've seen Pornhub doing similar initiatives. Haven't read any updates whether they did plant all trees that they promised to. No one keeping tab.
Saving comes first. Even before spending.

That's practically my advice to everyone. You'd be surprised to see many people live paycheck-to-paycheck even when their salary grow double or triple.

Lifestyle inflation is very real.

Non-native English speaker. But isn't easier to understand like so,

"Tantivity to Toshi, is as Lucene to Elasticsearch"

You're talking about Golden Goal. Soccer already have that from as long as I remember.

Then it was "downgraded" to Silver Goal. Only both to be abolished later on.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_goal

Wiki mentioned "The golden goal and silver goal were widely perceived as failed experiments" but I'm in the opposing camp. Golden Goal is freaking exciting as a spectator.

Re:Show HN: Stay with founders in San Francisco on Tuesday October 30, 2018 @03:30AM (#18334499)
I think you got it wrong. S/he want to meet the founder. But s/he's a schlub.

After few cycles the founders may have lesser incentives to participate.

Same here. We need another Everpix-like platform.

Without the "amazing journey" of course.

And taste better.

But for business its all about cost. Cheaper material, easier to control in manufacturing line, cheaper to move around.

Can it is.

Re:Disguised user location data collection on Huawei phone? on Sunday October 14, 2018 @10:47PM (#18217084)
If you think "promoting" is bad, try giving out free hardware.

I toured datacenters in Malaysia and the amount of Huawei equipment is unbelievable. All major telco DC are using them.

I asked around and most are saying that Huawei gave away their hardware for almost no initial cost. Huawei even supply their engineer to migrate away from Cisco/Juniper.

Re:How to Name a Baby (2013) on Tuesday September 18, 2018 @06:54AM (#18014116)
"There" in Malay & Indonesian.
I haven't had the time to try this. But my issue with built-in AWS forecast is it'll be totally inaccurate once Reserved Instance come into play. Does CloudForecast solve this issue?
Nitpicking, but can we put some warning if the link will automatically download something? ZIP in this case.

HN seems to cut the link text.

Re:Mylo: A leather-like material made from mycelium on Tuesday April 17, 2018 @11:50PM (#16864467)
Then we should start consuming them. Javanese & Minangkabau people of Indonesia does.

Prepared properly, they have jelly-like texture and taste earthy. Great in soup and spicy dishes.

Re:Ask HN: What has HN given you? on Sunday February 18, 2018 @10:18PM (#16410515)
Completely agree. To add to that, HN also makes me feel inadequate, but in a good way. That in return "forces" me to always improve and strive for the better especially in my career.
Re:EBay to Ditch PayPal for Dutch Payment Processor Adyen on Thursday February 01, 2018 @11:38PM (#16288456)
But the brand name matters. My previous company selling online product to typical non-tech audience, and majority US customer insist on Paypal.
Re:EBay to Ditch PayPal for Dutch Payment Processor Adyen on Thursday February 01, 2018 @11:35PM (#16288444)
My previous employer in SEAsia is using Adyen, with majority customer in Europe and Aus/NZ. Hundred thousands of customer. I've never heard of Adyen before joining this company, but my experience with them has been positive. Not Stripe good, but at least on par with other modern payment processor.

Major upside for Adyen is they price match(at least for my company, we process USD ~350mil/annum). This may sounds crazy but my company constantly negotiate the pricing with them. Almost on monthly basis.

I knew this because my team have to work with lots of local and China-based payment processor to create PoC. Just so that corporate team can show this to Adyen and renegotiate the fee.

Re:Wi-Fi startup Eero lays off 30 employees on Friday January 05, 2018 @05:06AM (#16077687)
By default its off. I have 3 AP with ~40 device connected and my controller is in my laptop which usually not even on. Works fine.
Re:Alibaba is leading a $27M investment in MariaDB on Friday September 29, 2017 @12:27PM (#15366697)
Familiarity?

MySQL/MariaDB is pretty much the "standard" database that most programmer started with. At least in university.

So there is no point on using PosgreSQL if MariaDB fits the bill for them. Less learning curve, easy to hire for etc

Re:A straight talk about btrfs on Friday August 25, 2017 @04:37AM (#15097022)
Don't think so. I maintained multi-vendor NAS'es and always try to be up-to-date.

Do you mean QNAP? Last year they started offering new enterprise NAS with custom OS built on top of BSD kernel

> QNAP Enterprise Storage(QES) operating system, which is based on the simple and efficient FreeBSD kernel and the ZFS file system

Just sharing mine. My company customer consist of major international financial establishment.

As some simply can't go with certain open source project due to compliance, we settled with Tectia SSH[1]. Similar story with VPN and other security-related stuff.

Everything is SFTP with them. Even API json response lol

Re:Perl 5.26.0 released on Thursday June 01, 2017 @08:26AM (#14459655)
DevOps duh

In all seriousness I'm glad with these changes. I'm paid more to be NIX sysadmin, with minimal working knowledge of AWS/Azure/GCP.

All hail buzzword!

Re:Kim Jong-Nam Was Killed by VX Nerve Agent, Malaysians Say on Thursday February 23, 2017 @11:13PM (#13720935)
The timeline seems to agree.

Jong Nam felt uneasy after being sprayed and went to KLIA clinic. As his condition worsen, he's transferred to Putrajaya hospital which is 30min away from KLIA. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. I would say 30min to 1 hour for the nerve agent to actually kill someone.

Sorry I don't have source. Just watched the news few days ago on Malaysian TV.

Re:Red Hat becomes first open-source company to make $2B on Wednesday March 23, 2016 @11:56PM (#11350473)
Speaking from business perspective:

Same reason many people using SUSE Linux.

- Support

- SLA

- Familiarity and continuity

Sure business can pay for Debian enterprise support too, but its slightly different mindset when the whole ecosystem was made for business and enterprise.

Define "successful startup"?

Countless of people have started small and stayed small. I think it always been like that traditionally. You start a business, you grow it till its big enough to serve your niche market, and you pull in few million every year for the rest of your career life without much effort.

I used to work in manufacturing industry and this model is more prevalent in their whole supply chain. You could own 1 factory with less than 20 staff, producing 1 type of component(bolt/glue/bracket etc) and be done with it.

However, if you define successful startup, as multi-million dollar revenue organization, that's another story.

Re:How to clean an airliner on Wednesday October 07, 2015 @08:13AM (#10345491)
I worked for few days after high school with company that do cabin cleaning during aeroplane ground handling. This is in SouthEast Asia, and I'm dealing with budget airlines. Most have 1hour turnaround time. So imagine inside the cabin..

00:00 - Passenger disembark

00:15 - Everything started

00:20 - Cleaning/supply crew / repair crew / QC inspector (12 unit)

00:30 - Food crew (4 unit)

00:40 - Flight attendant & safety officer (8 unit)

00:50 - Cleaning crew / repair crew / safety officer /food crew disembark. I believe captain and copilot will be on the plane by now.

Each steps done by different team with almost no synergy with others. It was not pleasant experience if you consider the space inside the smallest 737. If you'd think that I'll clean every nook and cranny, you're way off your chart. We're specifically looking for visible stain(vomit/blood/soda). The only special treatment First & Business Class get is stricter QC.

I hate the fact that most people(including me apparently) still assume AWS is not in their "downtime" equation. Just spend the last 30min troubleshooting SMTP auth problem.

Not funny when its Sunday.

Do foreign student allowed to work part time in Germany/Finland/Sweden etc? That will definitely attract more student who want to be self sufficient instead of depending on allowance from parent back home.
