Re:The Source of Chinese Savings on Tuesday November 24, 2009 @01:41PM (#959715)
Sorry for being naive. How would saving company money in a private account increase savings?
Re:Why I left math on Tuesday November 10, 2009 @01:48AM (#932601)
This is probably a regulation forced by the unions to ensure pay equality (i.e. people on the same level are paid the same).

The police in Botswana also doesn't carry guns...

> Perhaps you could ask some women.

Quite a few women I know would rather be at home with their children than work. I hear that same complaining line from a family member often. It is not torture for someone to stay at home and raise kids.

I personally would like to be a house-dad when I eventually have kids (while my wife works). I think the importance of raising children is quite underrated. And the modern trend of outsourcing the raising of your kids (to day-care centers and after school programs, etc…) is wrong.

> I'll offer just one feature: If you have a job outside the home, you are free to quit your job and take a better job when conditions change. Not so easy to "quit" the "job" of raising your kids, or of living in your home when you have no other home to live in and no work experience that you can use to find a job somewhere else.

You can’t really quit raising kids – whether you like it or not. I would also offer a flipside: In my parents’ generation it was common for women to work half-day (half-day secretarial work, etc…). Yet today it isn’t so – the majority of jobs require you to work from 8 to 17h00.

That is what I also thought. From the article:

> Many of the specially designed bikes, which cost $3,500 each,

They have thought extremely hard how to make the bike so expensive. A fancy normal bike costs $200. How the hell do you pay that much for a bike?

I paid $5000 for my car...

Re:Fad or Icon? How the Crocs brand crashed & burned on Saturday October 24, 2009 @07:09PM (#901026)
> If Crocs hadn't saturated the market, then all those knock-offs would have stolen more of the total money to be made on the idea.

That is true. I think the total amount of crocs sold is the same - the only difference is that 90% of them are knockoffs. I am wearing a $2 pair of knock-offs right now.

The problem is that it was a good idea which everyone could copy.

Nope. They went for the awesomeness factor.

Then again, my dirty fan only cost $20 (2 meters high fan, made in China).

I personally feel that killing is almost never warranted. Gandhi did not kill anyone and Desmond Tutu never advocated for violence.

The problem with violence is that everyone feels that their cause justifies it.

Just a few comments (this whole thread is contrary to YCNews policies).

> Nelson Mandela . . . yeah . . . ditto. Oh, did I mention 27 years in a notorious prison for 'enemies of the state'.

Nelson Mandela was convicted of trying to overthrow the state by armed means and sabotage. It was not due to non-violent protests and even if the cause was right, armed insurrection is never right. And if he succeeded in overthrowing the state it would have been a mess at that time.

Mandela was the head of Umkhonto we Sizwe (the armed wing of the ANC). While he does not bear personal responsibility (since he was in prison) Umkhonto we Sizwe did quite a few despicable things during the struggle.

Also, Robben Island (where Mandela spent the majority of his time) isn’t that notorious. Many prisoners of the struggle era were kept there and many of them obtained degrees while in prison (from UNISA). I would much rather be incarcerated in Robben Island than today’s Pollsmoor prison.

Whatever the argument, he still deserved a prize (as did FW de Klerk) for the negotiated settlement that brought about the first multi-racial elections.
