Re:RPKI now protects 70% of internet routes on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:22PM (#50113133)
RPKI isn't necessary for this hypothetical to happen, and there's a lot easier ways for various governments to put pressure on network providers to do their bidding.

Every smart TV is dumb if you don’t connect it to a network
Re:99% of My Website Traffic Is Bots on Friday August 07, 2026 @08:31PM (#49217765)
How often does your data change?

If infrequent you could cache the generated page and not query D1 for subsequent requests at all.

Thought it was just me, strange time to flip that switch without notice
Re:Has AI already killed self-help nonfiction books? on Tuesday June 16, 2026 @11:09PM (#48565232)
The average non fiction book is 200 pages, can be summarized in under 10, and is repackaging someone else’s ideas

Literary slop being replaced with AI

Sun Rays were so awesome. Smart cards for authentication and sessions. Options for fiber directly to them. Great tech that died with Sun.
Re:Ghostty is leaving GitHub on Tuesday April 28, 2026 @04:21PM (#47940135)
"The timing of this is coincidental with the large outage on April 27, 2026."

This PS is as impactful as the body of the post.

And almost by happenstance Apple. Turns out they have a great platform for inference and torched almost nothing comparatively on Siri. The Apple/Gemini deal is interesting, Google continues to demonstrate their willingness to degrade their experience on Apple to try and force people to switch.
Re:Opus 4.6 uncovers 500 zero-day flaws in open-source code on Thursday February 05, 2026 @05:55PM (#46906595)
Did they submit 500 patches?
Did anyone make a copy they can share?

No API and Bots is a feature for me
He also has a 25 Gbps Internet connection - not really a huge problem here

Shopify did this - it’s frightening when you see the numbers across your entire org
Re:ICANN fee price hike by 11% [pdf] on Thursday June 05, 2025 @07:20PM (#44196547)
Can I swear here without being banned? What a joke.
My immediate reaction reading the post was “don’t use PayPal”

Online marketplaces, multiparty sellers, credit card transactions, etc… are hard enough as it is

Don’t become dependent on a vendor who’s absolutely terrible to work with

Re:Replacing Kubernetes with systemd (2024) on Monday May 05, 2025 @05:28PM (#43899628)
I know some large AWS environments that run a variation of this

Autoscaling fleet - image starts, downloads container from registry and starts on instance

1:1 relationship between instance and container - and they’re running 4XLs

When you get past the initial horror it’s actually beautiful

Re:Tailscale has raised $160M on Tuesday April 08, 2025 @05:33PM (#43626681)
$33m/year burn accelerating to $50m+/year

Profitability and exit math just got harder

I love the service and am rooting for them - I just don’t get this cash outlay

I can’t wait to learn what I’m missing here

Re:What If We Made Advertising Illegal? on Saturday April 05, 2025 @02:35PM (#43595602)
99% of consumer tech would die
Re:The DOJ Still Wants Google to Sell Off Chrome on Saturday March 08, 2025 @03:14PM (#43303124)
First I don't believe this is an effective remedy to break up a Google monopoly, but I have no influence on the DOJ.

I'm curious though, if Google can no longer pay browsers for search engine traffic what is the business model that will sustain development and advancement in the space?

How does a non Google owned Chrome support itself and continue development?

What happens to all the applications that rely on Chrome extensions?

As much as I dislike Google behavior, I don't see this as being a good thing.

The FTC action is because GoDaddy claimed to have security when they didn’t - not because they didn’t have security in the first place.

Subtle but important difference.

Also the remedies include having a complete security program within 90 days IIRC, on what world would anyone think that’s remotely possible?

They wouldn’t even have an RFP drafted in 90 days.

You might want to move, but do all ~49,999 other people share the same view?
Re:So You Want to Build Your Own Data Center on Saturday January 18, 2025 @03:06PM (#42751009)
There's places where it makes sense to be on the cloud, and places where it doesn't. The two best examples I can give are for high bandwidth, or heavy disk intensive applications.

Take Netflix. While almost everything is in the cloud the actual delivery of video is via their own hardware. Even at their size I doubt this business would be economically feasible if they were paying someone else for this.

Something I've seen often (some numbers changed because...)

20 PB Egress at $0.02/GB = $400,000/month

20 PB is roughly 67 Gbps 95th Percentile

It's not hard to find 100 Gbps flat rate for $5,000/month

Yes this is overly simplistic, and yes there's a ton more that goes into it than this. But the delta is significant.

For some companies $4,680,000/year doesn't move the needle, for others this could mean survival.

Re:So You Want to Build Your Own Data Center on Saturday January 18, 2025 @02:05PM (#42750561)
If you didn't lower your bandwidth costs way more than 50% we should chat.
We’ll surely see a note is their next earnings release about the uptick in Gemini usage
Check out Fastmail
Is this really a $4B investment, or credits on AWS?

AWS margins are close to 40%, so the real cost of this "investment" would be way less than the press release.

Re:End of an era: Landsat 7 mission takes final images on Thursday September 26, 2024 @06:33PM (#41664235)
Life expectancy is statistical probability

The mission targets a length of time, then the engineering matches for the design and build

Reality is usually much longer

Reminds me a a city in the PNW using outdoor APs to track people. Doesn’t matter if you’re on the free WiFi they still get your movement.
Good
