I'm reminded of [Things You Should Never Do Part 1](https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2000/04/06/things-you-should-...) , but substitute all those rulings and laws and interpretations for all the bug fixes, i.e. they support and provide service for edge cases, i.e. marginal people, organizations, and places. That's what the lawsuits are for; not to protect the ruling but to protect the people who weren't being served. Let's tear it all out just to build it again, adding all new bug fixes for all the same reasons.
Right. My word was before "wizard," and later I guessed "yesterday," which is after wizard. It put yesterday adjacent to the entry box, before wizard. Same is true for words before the word. Basically, if I make bad guesses, it doesn't list them in alpha order.
Re:Ask HN: Where are all the touch-based art forms? on Friday April 12, 2024 @11:20AM (#40013938)
Sculpture can be tactile. I know it's not purely tactile, but thinking of it in that way is becoming a lot more common (eg at the Louvre). And then I went to find a URL for the tactile dome at the Exploratorium in San Francisco (https://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/tactile-dome) and it turns out there are lots of tactile galleries now:

Re:The spotted lanternfly is now in Illinois on Monday October 02, 2023 @07:30PM (#37745886)
If it's otherwise healthy, they won't kill it or even hurt it that badly. They loved the black walnut in our yard and I was worried about it, but by the next year they were mostly gone.

I live in a woodsy suburb in SE PA, and saw that first infestation. It was horrible. Disgusting. The next year was way better, and by this year (I can't remember if this is year 3 or 4) there were hardly any. There are definitely predators catching on--I've seen praying mantises and various spiders eating them. I think I've heard that some birds have caught on, too.

What I don't know is at first we heard that it's a little colder than they like around here, and that we should expect them to move south. I haven't heard that it's bad south of here, but I don't know.

Re:National Motorcycle Museum Closing Its Doors on Monday September 18, 2023 @08:07AM (#37555080)
I've worked in and around museums for a long time and this topic comes up now and again. It occurred to me that if we think a museum should never close, then we'll never open up museums experimentally. There's no museum startup.

I agree it's a shame for the community and the staff.

The crime is having spaces where cars have more rights than pedestrians.
Right, figuring that out was an important step in our appreciation that catastrophes happen and are impactful on a large scale, you know, not just little things that get covered up by longer-term, consistent processes.

Requiring that they provide more information earlier encourages them to behave more safely (by exposing them to scrutiny backed by sound evidence). And if they still go down, at least it happened sooner and there are fewer depositors to be harmed.
Re:The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment on Thursday February 09, 2023 @03:07PM (#34730572)
My heart wants to agree with you but all those regulations must have something to do with how few people die in airplane crashes. It's like the textbook case of when regulations work, and I don't think the FAA has a department of special exceptions. We can wishfor it, but it's not easy to handle someone who wants to do something different.

Cool! I bought Cosmic Encounter in the 80s. I left it with my parents when I moved out, and then we would play it there when we visited so I never moved it to my own house. Then of course they threw it out. I had no idea it had been republished. Very fun game--a little random but for me that makes it more fun.
Re:Magpies – Smart, Witty Birds on Monday December 05, 2022 @10:50PM (#33875688)
KineticLensman's writing is a little unclear there, but I think that was the intent--birds are tricky, and Caracaras are just as tricky as raccoons, i.e. not safe.
This sounds like what I did in high school and college, where I did pretty well for grades etc. By grad school I was doing funner things, and then the first 15 or so years of working, I worked pretty hard and was productive. Since then I don't think I can measure what I do in terms of productivity; I'm a manager (every day) and strategist (on good days) and if I have a good idea, it's rare and unpredictable.

So I would ask, are you providing value in some other way? In school I got a lot of informal extra credit, or at least good will, by participating in class a lot even when I hadn't done reading or homework. I'm sure that alone caused teachers to bump me up a half-grade or better. And then after 30 years of working I still do kind of the same thing by being useful at meetings and in figuring out what work can and should be done, defending and supporting my colleagues and staff, and otherwise being a good influence around the office. What I'm saying is you might have other skills you're not recognizing.

Re:Jimmy Wales’ Final Email on Tuesday November 09, 2021 @03:39PM (#29167156)
The most successful nonprofit project in the history of the world and 90% of the comments here are about what they're doing wrong. Get a grip. Your idea about what they could be doing better is ... useless.

That said, some of those email tactics are a little unsavory. But you can bet they test the hell out of them and they do what makes the most money.

Because no serious environmentalist considers big hydro a net positive.
Laws in Europe are different in the US. I used to work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where I published the entire collection online. I got calls from colleagues in Europe amazed that we didn't worry about kids seeing stuff they shouldn't. We think the US is puritan but the decision that anything with merit can't be judged obscene actually protects us.
Many electric pressure cookers double or triple as other similar devices, e.g. rice cookers. Also, you can fry stuff in them before you start the pressure cooking phase (maybe you can do that in other devices, too, I don't know).

In general I would say that the temperature control in an electric pressure cooker is going to be more precise, so you see functions like yogurt making in them, too.

But how did the Pi get there? Was it just some NASA employee's project? Or was there physical intrustion and the Pi was part of the plan?
Re:Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years? on Thursday May 20, 2021 @12:37PM (#27223440)
Sodastream. We use it all the time. No-waste seltzer and the ginger ale mix is really good after you get used to it (one or two glasses is all it took us).

East, by Meera Sodha, an extremely good cookbook.

If you haven't heard it, Hilary Hahn's Chaconne is also slow compared to a lot of other interpretations, and for me has a lot of the same impact (makes me cry, basically, but stimulates a huge range of emotions in a very short time) as the later Gould recording. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqA3qQMKueA

CTO at a conservatory here. Although I haven't been in music long enough to really know, I think there is a lot of room here for a great open source product. Sibelius and Finale are too expensive and not interested in offering discounts to composition students. (Who would then probably be lifetime customers, so I don't really get it, but whatever.) Get in touch if you're interested in talking (I'm easy to find).

Re:The social obligation to be bad at things on Thursday June 11, 2020 @11:57AM (#23490176)
You don't know that there was oversharing. Or in any case, consider situations in which they're not oversharing. Everything he says might still be true in those cases. So your argument kind of slides around the point, it doesn't counter it.

The author is using a blunt kind of language that may encourage us to disagree. You're right that it could be said better ("date" is a good example). But there's still truth in it.

You're not being unreasonable but that's not the issue. The issue is the leverage you have now. Your value to your partner ends with the sale. You are valuable to the new owner as the sole person who understands how the product works. Even if they only want the idea and the customers, recoding it will cost something and be cheaper/easier/faster with your participation, plus they'll need someone to support the current product for a while, or they'll shed those customers.

Convince your partner that the buyers will need you, and will only get you if you're happy with the terms of the sale. If you can enlist the buyers in this campaign, so much the better.

So here is what my family did for years: a keepass DB in a Dropbox folder under a shared Dropbox account. Various Keepass clients on all the devices.

We don't pay for Dropbox, so this is broken now with the 3-client limit. And it was always slightly complicated ... I couldn't get non-techies to try it so I don't really recommend it to others (rather I recommend the lastpasses).

Anyway, this change makes sense to me. They'll make it a notch more user-friendly than using keepass, while raising questions about portability and whether we can trust dropbox with this. Hardly anybody cares about those issues.

Start an Uber for oil sales. You're not selling it, you're just enabling. Others can get licenses, or not. You don't have to care!
