Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:02PM (#50094234)
So, how does one actually find a "good" dentist? I've yet to figure this one out.

Not detracting from this post, but has anyone else noticed there's a front page post about Quaternions or Kalman filters on about a monthly cadence? Wonder why that is?
Re:Learn Electronics by Practice on Saturday July 08, 2023 @09:29PM (#36650568)
In my experience in a university ECE program, you'd start with understanding the high level properties of transistors, then combining transistors to make AND and OR gates, then XOR and other gates, then MUXes and half/full adders, then flip-flops and eventually into synchronous (clocked) logic.

The lab component of such coursework did start with TTL chips but the timing of the coursework was such that you'd have most of the asynchronous logic theory taught by the time the chips came out.

Of course! A setup GUI is almost a required feature if you intend to sell or give it to a non-programmer. That just wasn't the case for me.

Very cool.

Looks similar to my own project. I think we even used the same case for the display.

Not sure you can eliminate it, but you can certainly reduce the impact and scale by fighting anti-competitive behavior . A major reason this sort of mass manipulation is so lucrative and effective is because you only have operate on a couple of platforms to reach a majority of eyeballs.
Reminded me of the Amazon show called Upload. Sort of a lighter, more humorous take than Black Mirror, but the darker philosophical complexities still surface regularly.
It almost did. There was a hostile takeover bid from Broadcom a few years back, and the US gov intervened to block it.

Re:Building an E-Ink weather display for our home on Sunday November 13, 2022 @09:24PM (#33589593)
Very cool. Shamelessly linking my own weather display: https://github.com/Mrjohns42/WeatherDash

Supporting EINK on mine could potentially help make it more visually compelling like yours, but I've done other EINK display projects in the past (see https://github.com/Mrjohns42/DoggieClock) and screen burn-in was definitely an issue.

The world always needs more 3D platformers.
Keeping it.

Every company all hands for the past year wouldn't be complete without an exec making comments about our eventual "return to work" policy, which has been delayed over and over again by surges and variants.

Asses in chairs is not a "company culture". I'm 10x more efficient in my home office than my open floor-plan desk next to the bathroom (with no sound-proofing) in a high traffic area. The 45-minute commute (each way) that I save largely ends up translating into more hours worked from me. With communications primarily happening over email and chat, we now have written records of decision making processes and we lose a lot less information along the way.

We're not a purely software company, so I understand some roles simply don't work remote, but I don't agree with a company-wide policy preventing regular remote work. I'm not looking forward to the struggle that is on the horizon.

Also reminds me of the intro to Creature Comfort by Arcade Fire.

High school history was awful for me as well. But a new course on ethnic studies doesn't have to fall prey to the same issues that have plagued US history education. Namely, who is defining the curriculum, what biases are they including (intentionally or not), how are educators trained to approach and teach the subject. If our education system hadn't failed so hard in these considerations for US history, it's arguable that a separate ethnic studies curriculum wouldn't be (as) necessary. Here's to hoping we can learn from our mistakes.

Well, this seems to be just about everything most people wanted Facebook to be. Yet all I see here is (mostly-warranted) doubt and criticism.

Makes me wonder if an ideal service ever does come along, would we even be able to give it enough of a chance for it to stick? Or have we just been burned so badly, we'll never trust again?

There are large rubber bands you can buy specifically to hold the filter in place on the box fan. I've seen them on Amazon.

I know it's just TV, but this situation played out differently on Silicon Valley. Instead, the competitors hopped to the front of the line to pay off the patent troll before a successful case emboldened the troll to raise their price. Has anyone actually heard of things playing out this way in reality?
Re:Show HN: I made a simulator for personal finance on Wednesday April 28, 2021 @02:43PM (#26972650)
This is a fantastic tool but honestly my favorite part is that I can try what seems like most of the features without ever having to create an account and providing personally identifiable info that will inevitably lead to yet another mailing list for me to ignore. So thank you for having faith in your users!
Re:Daft Punk Break Up on Monday February 22, 2021 @06:13PM (#26231947)
The farewell video is a clip from a prior work of theirs circa 2006, so I'm not sure how much can be translated from the clip to the real world circumstances behind the breakup. Of course, their selection of this clip to make the announcement in lieu of anything else could be construed as some sort of statement. Part of me wants to know everything, part of me prefers the mystery.
Re:Python 3's F-Strings: An Improved String Formatting Syntax on Wednesday January 20, 2021 @11:13PM (#25855304)

Re:Show HN: ZuccNet – Encrypted Facebook Messaging on Tuesday January 19, 2021 @04:55PM (#25839430)
From Facebook Secret Conversations FAQ:

> If you think a message you've received in a secret conversation goes against our Community Standards, you can report it. Learn more about what a secret conversation is. When you report a secret conversation, recent messages from that conversation will be decrypted and sent securely from your device to our Help Team for review. We won't tell the person you're talking to that you reported it.

Since Facebook's software is managing the keys, they have the ability to decrypt Secret Conversations. You have to trust Facebook not to snoop. Whereas w/ ZuccNet, the public keys can be exchanged via a separate channel from Facebook, thus rendering Facebook unable to snoop.
