Re:Top mathematicians are outraged by OpenAI's methods on Friday September 11, 2026 @04:20PM (#49664795)
Entertainment has no functional value for humans?

Or at least tell me the functional value of Fermat’s last theorem.

Re:A misalignment of AI in mathematics on Friday September 11, 2026 @04:14PM (#49664697)
Your comment perfectly illustrates why most are missing the point. Many people, including you, deeply believe that most mathematicians are chasing adoration of their genius, otherwise why would anyone care about such abstract work?

People like Grigori Perelman would baffle you, a mathematician who solved the Poincaré Conjecture, refused the monetary prize, field medal and continues to live a life of total recluse.

For most mathematicians their primary drive is chasing the unknown, not for anyone’s adoration, but to pursue their desire to see what lies in the beyond.

Not sure whose ego is being insulted here. If you spend two seconds reading the letter you’d realize it’s talking about human understanding has been crucial to advancing of mathematics, and AI companies are not bothering with it. If they succeed, human understanding becomes irrelevant. The beauty of math that you claim comes from the process of humans understanding it. Maybe you should try to redirect your emotions and misdirected feelings of schadenfraude to /dev/null and try to read what it is about

What a shallow midwit reductionist take. This is no different than people who claim that artists are only mad because AI has made everyone world class “artists”.
Based on what? I wouldn’t have learned about ASD-STE100 if I hadn’t stumbled upon this post. I’m not even going to use the linked GitHub project, just mentioning ASD-STE100 spec in certain prompts makes them useful.
Not everyone spends their time browsing hackernews or other forums all day.

This is the first time I’m hearing about this, I think it’s nifty, and it’s precisely why I come to hackernews at least once a day.

Also what is wrong with using Claude to make a more polished post about something that’s being talked about already?

That is before south park made their new shows.
Re:Nobel Peace Prize 2025: María Corina Machado on Friday October 10, 2025 @05:24PM (#45543944)
This is such a highly disingenuous bad faith argument, Obama won it in 2009, are you suggesting the Nobel committee should have used some time travel technology to peer into the future?
As a website owner I definitely want the capability allow and block certain crawlers. If I say I don’t want crawlers from Perplexity they should respect that. This sneaky evasion just highlights that company is not to be trusted, and I would definitely pay any hosting provider that helps me enforce blocking parasitic companies like perplexity.
Re:Why Writing by Hand Is Better for Memory and Learning on Saturday May 31, 2025 @01:12AM (#44141989)
It's mostly because learning happens kinda all over the brain. Concepts don't get stored into a specific region. I suspect that by engaging more areas of the brain the concepts have more surface area available to be integrated into.
Conventional cable news media isn’t tailor made to an individual, doesn’t have live back and forth positive feedback loops. This is significantly way worse then conventional cable news media
Re:Gemini 2.5 on Tuesday March 25, 2025 @03:56PM (#43475200)
How does it compare to OpenAI and anthropic’s user data retention policy?
Re:Gemini 2.5 on Tuesday March 25, 2025 @03:55PM (#43475192)
I mean this is pretty standard for online llms. What is Gemini doing here that openai or Anthropic aren’t already doing?
Re:Suspension of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong on Wednesday February 05, 2025 @01:34AM (#42944708)
It’s a govt service, they are not trying to meet wall street quarterly shareholder expectations
By that logic expecting citizens to stop at traffic light or expecting them to not violate speed limits is a nanny state act.

It was not an exclusive deal. Other companies can also sing similar deals.
Re:“It appears that Twitter is DDoSing itself” on Saturday July 01, 2023 @05:10PM (#36555265)
Which instance? Sounds like you joined a niche instance of a few hundred people. I find twitter to be extremely restrictive, you can’t have open discussions, you either get banned or get piled on by abusive blue check accounts.
Who runs the BGS? It’s the most expensive part, a few “centralized” providers will run this? What if BGS injects its own filtering? Honestly this sounds like a more complicated way of implementing centralization

Re:Google Search Is Dying on Monday March 06, 2023 @07:15AM (#35040124)
How is that Google's fault? are you expecting a "Search" engine to perform qualitative analysis on your specific topic and generate a list for you?

"best xxx reddit" that's google working as intended, you searched for a topic on reddit.

I swear with the proliferation of LLMs most people have completely forgotten what a "search" in a search engine means.
