Re:Ask HN: Does anyone enjoy work anymore? on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:54PM (#50346985)
More than ever - it's a whole new ride. I feel like I'm on the new frontier once again, which is where I always want to be.

No, it's not the same work I was doing a year ago, but neither was that the same work I was doing a few years prior, and so forth, all the way back to the beginning of my career.

Re:5-MeO-DMT sometimes cancels the Ebbinghaus illusion on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:01PM (#50305834)
This is about 5-MeO-DMT, not N,N-DMT (which is what people usually mean by "DMT"). Very different experience.
Re:NetBSD adds a new beginner-friendly text editor called atto on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:09PM (#50294277)
I used pico or nano as my everyday unix coding editor for something like fifteen years, starting in the late '90s. It was just fine. I couldn't stand vi and didn't see the point of emacs; I type faster than I think, so I never found that text-editing was enough of a bottleneck to make sophisticated automation worth the effort.

I only stopped using pico/nano after writing my own editor, which blatantly stole pico's interface design.

Well, yeah, that would certainly have a noticeable effect.

Never heard it called "mebufotenin" before.

Re:Writing about pratt parsing so I remember it on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:26PM (#50277281)
That is my favorite approach for parsing any language which has operator precedence. It is easy to write, easy to maintain, performs well, and doesn't require you to include extra tools in your build process.

I know some people love their parser generator tools, but I just don't find them to be worth the hassle; parsing is not a hard problem.

Re:Somebody please stop the spam texts on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:01PM (#50250884)
The spam continued long after that particular election was over. I don't remember how long it took to clean it up, exactly, just that each campaign who got my number did in fact respect the END/STOP request, and I was eventually able to get ahead of the viral spread.
Re:Somebody please stop the spam texts on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:49PM (#50250723)
After I once made the mistake of donating money to a political campaign, I actually was able to free myself from the torrent of spam by replying END and STOP over and over. It took months, but the messages did stop.

Someone managed to connect my phone number to my voter registration during my recent move, so the spam is back. This time, I am replying END or STOP and then blocking the number & reporting spam, just in case that creates more friction for them.

Re:No Need for Retirement When Utopia Is Around the Corner on Friday October 23, 2026 @03:43PM (#50214343)
I really think I will be working for as many more years as I am able, yes, because a life without work would be intolerably boring. There will always be work that needs doing.
Re:Attention people who think UB is fine on Thursday October 22, 2026 @11:20PM (#50204128)
This is only true because compiler authors are interpreting "undefined behavior" as a license for "user-hostile behavior". There are other choices one can make.
Re:Where Wealth Is Moving in America (2023) on Thursday October 22, 2026 @03:08PM (#50199698)
> does it mean that more tech hubs pop up elsewhere because in the long haul, people probably prefer to work and invest close to home?

That's why Seattle ended up with a software industry presence, isn't it?

Re:We Turned All Developers into Managers. Now What? on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @08:09PM (#50174429)
Yes, my job is more like management now than it used to be, but the fact that I'm still not managing people makes all the difference. I do not ever want to be any human being's boss. Coordinating robots is still a basically technical process.
Re:Walt: Tap-to-Pay for the Rebels on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @07:59PM (#50174351)
Interesting! I have completely ignored tap-to-pay and all sorts of phone wallets precisely because I am unwilling to let the big tech companies control my life. I had never considered that there might be an acceptable way to use this technology.
I have not given time estimates for years, but that has nothing to do with AI.
Re:The return of phones with physical keyboards? on Thursday October 08, 2026 @02:17PM (#50009724)
I've been waiting for the Clicks Communicator a good while now. If it ever ships, I'll probably buy one. I hadn't heard about the Minimal phone: an interesting concept.

I have never been able to really love a phone without a keyboard; typing on glass frustrates me so much that I tend to just avoid using the device.

Re:Why people don't want to have children any more on Thursday October 08, 2026 @02:12PM (#50009655)
I wonder why people downvoted you. My story is much the same: I could give a long list of reasons why I chose not to have children, but the simpler truth is that I never saw anything on the "pro" side of the ledger.
Re:Why people don't want to have children any more on Thursday October 08, 2026 @02:01PM (#50009467)
Why is it necessary to own a house before you can have children?

That was not the case for the families I knew growing up; homeownership was the exception, not the rule. My parents had eleven children, and never got around to buying a house.

Re:Ask HN: Is the Future of IDEs Bleak? on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @07:24PM (#50000129)
I gave up on IDEs years ago. The terminal is fine.
Re:Vibecoding isn't as fun as writing code by hand on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @11:47AM (#49980247)
Managing humans is hard work. Team dynamics are complicated. Communication is uncertain. Relationships which have power imbalances can be fraught. People's lives get messy and that leaks into their work. Performance is sometimes uneven and you have to deal with it.

Robots are much easier.

Re:Vibecoding isn't as fun as writing code by hand on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @11:24AM (#49979911)
My account is seventeen years old, and I've been coding more than forty years; is that enough to meet your standards?

I do love the weird new world we're in. I feel as though I've been a player in an orchestra all my life, doing a little one-man-band act on the side, and suddenly I've been handed the baton and now I get to conduct the whole show.

I've been automating myself out of a job as long as I've been a coder, which has become a considerable span of time; that is my job.
Re:Social Reality in China on Friday October 02, 2026 @04:09PM (#49938014)
This is a common experience with any unfamiliar genre: it all looks or sounds the same at first, because the point of a genre is to express variation within a specific, familiar structure. As a newcomer, the structure dominates your perception, until you've exposed yourself to enough instances that you can filter out the common features and notice the details, which are where the actual creativity lies.
Re:Suits Are Better Tech Than Modern Clothes on Thursday October 01, 2026 @03:41PM (#49926175)
hockerty.com will make you a shirt to measure, with your choice of materials, for quite a reasonable price. I have a few of them. It feels good to have a shirt which fits you exactly.
Re:SDF vs. MSDF vs. Slug: GPU Text Rendering on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @07:59PM (#49916028)
I wonder if you are more or less tired of reading LLM-generated writing than I am of reading complaints about LLM-generated writing.
Re:Burning Man Death Rates – A Short Lesson in Statistics on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:46PM (#49912093)
> The other fell from an installation.

I'd like to know more about that incident, if you have any information. So far as I'm aware, it's the first time someone has died after falling off a structure at Burning Man (though plenty of people have been injured, of course).

Re:Any nerds out there who've read a lot of research papers? on Saturday September 26, 2026 @06:25PM (#49861141)
"SSA is functional programming" changed the course of my career. Memorable indeed.
Re:Serious editors are a commitment (at least for me) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @01:55AM (#49812162)
I just wrote my own, tailored exactly to my preferences, and I've been using it ever since. Editors are not trivial, but the scale is reasonable for a single-developer hobby project.
Re: on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @12:29AM (#49811656)
I have literally never spent a moment worrying about this. How do you even know that this is the case for your phone? If my phone gets security updates, it never tells me about them.
Re:What Sun got wrong on Monday September 21, 2026 @02:25PM (#49791260)
I wonder how effective it really is, over the long term, to generate short-term profit by consuming trust like this.
Re:Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md on Friday September 18, 2026 @08:10PM (#49761939)
Consistency with `robots.txt` seems like a reasonable choice.
