Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @05:35PM (#50344997)
Check my understanding: Astra and Qwen would likely choose a different number— weight— to represent any given concept, like “king”.

So to fix the weights, Astra first has learn a new language of how the numbers that represent weights map to meanings?

Re:Malware uses LLMs to rank victims by how much they're worth on Saturday October 31, 2026 @02:15PM (#50318506)
Once ranked, victims can be assigned a proportional token budget so that a high value victim might be targeted with zero days or deepfakes that are more expensive to execute but have passed the desired cost/reward threshold.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:32PM (#50264533)
My son's M1 Air CPU died suddenly. Maybe it was a thermal death from overheating. Not sure. But all the data on it was lost because the storage is soldered on. PSA to make sure devices with non-removable storage are backed up!

(We replaced it with a Framework... with removable storage.)

Re:Thunderbird for iOS on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:22PM (#50076228)
Thunderbird for Android is based on the 15+ year old K-9 Mail app while Thunderbird for iOS is a greenfield project.
Are you asking if people intend to use pervert glasses for evil?
Does Meta have a reputation about being honest about what it's doing? This is the company that just lost a $17 billion lawsuit for endangering children.
Because it's intentionally a camera that blends into normal clothing so it's less obvious you are being filmed.
Re:Can you tell which images are AI-generated? on Saturday September 19, 2026 @08:35PM (#49771422)
But then, some people specialize in taking photos that others would not because they have in mind stock photos, art or something else. They see the world differently.
Re:There's no point at which turning your brain off will work on Friday September 18, 2026 @01:50PM (#49757820)
Agents are still a bit to eager to please, so they are still missing cases when the better answer is to push back, change course or refactor.

But when the human suggests changing the course, the LLMs will often agree the new direction is better and start heading there...

Re:Don't Let Anyone Take Away Your Big Box of Cables on Friday September 11, 2026 @01:27PM (#49662062)
I have a small drawer of cables. If cable+1 doesn't fit, I have too many cables.
Re:This Month in Ladybird – August 2026 on Monday September 07, 2026 @08:41PM (#49604413)
The history of Chrome and Safari traces back to KTML, the renderer for Konqueror, a niche browser on Linux with so little market share there weren't real conversations about it ever seriously competing with Firefox or IE.

Then something unexpected happened: Apple adopted KHTML for Safari's WebKit. WebKit was then adopted as the render for Chrome

Could a niche browser still become mainstream /today/? I think so.

Re:Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root on Sunday August 30, 2026 @02:10PM (#49501206)
A distro should be secure-by-default. Omarchy’s design here was insecure by default while the docs have the impression that Docker might be running rootless. Pairing insecure defaults with docs that claim better security is bad.
Apparently the Omarchy plugin ecosystem is also a free for all like the Arch AUR, except the audience includes people who are new to Linux and less likely to understand the risks.
Re:What's New in Emacs 31.1? on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @12:50PM (#49437033)
I went from `vi` to `vim` to `neovim` to a spiritual successor `helix`, and here's Emacs at release 31 still the dominant fork of the emacs family of editors. Impressive.
Re:New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @12:44PM (#49436942)
I see that my old M1 Mac Mini with 16 GB memory and 1 TB drive has held value over time, selling for $600 to $700.

A new Mac Mini with that much ram and storage costs about double now.

I wonder how much they tested on non-English languages with fewer synonyms.
Re:Zed: Delta on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @02:58PM (#49277023)
To be fair: a year ago the editor was in the center and the AI chat was in the sidebar-- Cursor.

Here they've moved the AI chat to the center and code editor has been pushed to the side.

Re:Zed: Delta on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @02:53PM (#49276967)
Right, the value is not so clear of having multiple people wade through lengthy LLM responses. Part of the value that a human in the loop adds is figuring out what's correct and important in the response and passing on a more polished result.
Re:AI is removing the middle class of software engineering on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @01:12PM (#49275647)
Perhaps more broadly AI will hollow out "middle intelligence".

We could end up with a gulf between those who use AI for cognitive inquiry vs passive delegation. Those who accelerate learning by asking "help me understand this" vs those who relinquish understanding and analytical thinking to AI to complete their work.

Re:Meta's new open-weight model targets local agentic AI on Monday August 10, 2026 @10:19AM (#49244070)
Zuck's "I believe everyone should have access to superintelligence" quote echoes back to Meta's "Internet.org" effort to provide Facebook for "free" in emerging markets:

Where I can learn more about the genetic need of people of Sámi heritage to eat animal food?

When I tried to search for the details, I found only that it was a traditionally meat heavy diet.

Link?
Animal agriculture is a key driver of climate change: https://sentientmedia.org/how-does-livestock-affect-climate-...

Along with the high price, that's one more reason to not buy it.

Re:Discovery Loop on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @02:23PM (#49186823)
For certain amount of fast growth: yes. Then there's continued "growth-hacking" and enshittification to keep fast revenue growing after the pain point has been solved with dark patterns and questionable tactics.

Why? Because investors poured a bunch of money in to support fast growth and now they want their money back. And incremental growth won't do. Since 9 out of 10 of the investments fail, the surviving one has to continue to growth-hacking revenues.

Re:TokenTown: A visual way to understand how LLMs work on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @11:26AM (#49098763)
From this I learned LLMs are complex and compute-intensive.
Re:Weathergotchi – an open-source climate Tamagotchi on Wednesday July 15, 2026 @04:31PM (#48926654)
I found some kind weather sensor like this in a creek in a sealed clear film canister-sized container.

I took it home and looked up the part number. Looks like it was probably part of a network of sensors monitoring the forest health, but some ziptie broke on this one and ended up starting to get washed away. It ran on a big watch battery. I didn't try to get the data off it.. don't recall how data access worked for it.
