These days I go to https://news.ycombinator.com/active And search for [flagged] items first.
Does this explain Atlantic reporter invitation?
Re:Framework: A new RISC-V Mainboard from DeepComputing on Tuesday June 18, 2024 @10:39AM (#40718376)
I did not expect RISC-V to be ahead of ARM for framework. Is this is because of freedoms RISC-V brings for manufacturers?
Wait, isn't it the old way of thinking? That browser is a medium rather than a compute node. (I like both old and new ways)
Re:Kolmogorov Complexity and Compression Distance on Saturday March 30, 2024 @03:10PM (#39877678)
Sometimes I wonder what would be the smallest program to generate humans DNA. How many operations would it take and how would it compare to real world iterations of total evolution.

I failed at first try but I found a hint by looking at the example character by character.
Re:Stop using JSON Web Tokens for user sessions on Saturday November 25, 2023 @11:11AM (#38414379)
Using xss one might target login form and steal username/password instead of a token. So I do not see argument here against jwt. Sure the xss will have to be more sofisticated(?)
Re:U.S. federal price tag for the post-9/11 wars is over $8T on Thursday October 05, 2023 @03:16PM (#37782961)

Re:The Data Science Manifesto (2020) on Sunday September 17, 2023 @05:43PM (#37549645)
From now on you are not doing the real data science. But you can hire me to tell how the real data science is done.
Re:Math Proof Draws New Boundaries Around Black Hole Formation on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @04:14PM (#37153081)
Could it find some equilibrium environment to be able to suck as much matter as it radiates. So it could last longer (?)
Re:ECC RAM should be a human right on Saturday January 21, 2023 @06:14PM (#34471815)
If there would be such right, it should be expresed in terms of error probabilities rather than a specific features like ECC.

Re:Classifying Python virtual environment workflows on Saturday January 07, 2023 @02:49PM (#34291901)
My flow/boilerplate for apps:

./scripts/create-venv.sh # create venv using specific python version, update pip, wheel, setuptools, install requirements.txt
  ./scripts/freeze-requirements.sh # create tmp venv with requirements-base.txt and pip freeze > requirements.txt
./requirements-base.txt # dependencies with loose versions
  ./requirements.txt # frozen/locked dependencies
Re:The return of lazy imports for Python on Sunday December 25, 2022 @04:00PM (#34131186)
Is there an elegant way to import type hints without circular imports?
Re:Friends Have More Friends Than You on Tuesday November 29, 2022 @12:26AM (#33784016)
That is why I choose to have zero friends.
Re:There’s No Algorithms on Monday November 21, 2022 @05:26PM (#33698972)
We should not call it verification IMHO. The malicious user can create random website and add the rel=me. The "green" link makes impression that the user is "verified".

(I would prefer to have some chain of trust like pgp but with a better UX.)

AI should have elaborated more on what could be done better on Ukraine side. A few points for the context: - Ruzzians block evacuation routes of civilians when they have a chance. - Ruzzians rape and kill civilians when they enter a city. - Ruzzians use civilians as human shield (usual practice even before Ukraine war). - Ruzzians use nuclear plant as shield to place their artillery. - Ruzzians attack civilian objects no matter if Ukraine military is present or not.

So withdrawing from the city just means that the ruzzians can come and rape all the people.

Also this sentence does not make sense: > Most residential areas where soldiers located themselves were miles away from front lines and viable alternatives were available that would not have endangered civilians - such as military bases, densely-wooded areas or other structures further from residential areas.

Miles away from front lines - means the frontline is here already.

However, I agree that there should have been effort to evacuate civilians as many as possible.

And finally the title is just pure victim blaming.

Re:Polio Detected in US on Friday July 22, 2022 @06:05PM (#32197669)
By "not a big problem" I mean it would be worse to still have pandemic of original polio and maybe with additional mutations.

I am a layman in this field so I could be wrong.

Re:Polio Detected in US on Friday July 22, 2022 @04:51PM (#32196976)
Are you saying the problem is that we can't stop vaccinating for polio even if this normal type polio is gone? Because if we do stop vaccinating there is a risk of subtype 2 spreading. This looks like not a big problem. And it can be solved by making a beter vaccine(?)
Re:Show HN: Machine-learning-assisted side-channel attacks on Thursday June 09, 2022 @02:29PM (#31684994)
I guess these traces should depend on users network (location/latency/throughput/tor-enabled) and CPU. Did you use these as additional features for your model? Or was it a single configuration being tested?
Re:Show HN: Machine-learning-assisted side-channel attacks on Thursday June 09, 2022 @01:54PM (#31684508)
Could this be mitigated by disabling/suspending js in background tabs?
Re:Building a Budget Homelab NAS Server on Sunday May 29, 2022 @03:17PM (#31551967)
what would you recommend for power efficient hdds (when idle)?

I have recently built a truenas box with 2x4TB ssd's. But I think I will want to expand it. Currently it runs at 14W idle. If I add 2hdd I expect it to increase to 40W(?). How can I optimize this?
