Re:Vue.js: the good, the meh, and the ugly on Friday July 06, 2018 @11:53AM (#17472421)
+1 for .Vue files. I really like the organization around components and not around file types(.css, .js, .html) within a project's file structure. For me it's an immense time saver knowing exactly which css and javascript was intended for a particular component (using scoped scss for example - which for me is still a pain in the React I use at work).

<throws wrench> ... why does X need role model X? Can't an X have role model Y? Why wait for there to be role model anything. Those who want to come in, come in!
seems like the message that is being sent is that workers that are remote are less valued than those that are sitting at a desk in corporate HQ. Reading some of the quotes from the remote workers seems to imply that as well. If that's true, it's an unfortunate reality from a company that even does studies in favor of remote work.
Re:PEP 308 and why I still hate Python on Thursday March 09, 2017 @10:29PM (#13836123)
maybe it's bad form but I generally prefer to break my list/dictionary/set comprehensions into various lines. For me it increases the readability

    foo = [
        if condition(bar) transform(bar) else other_transform(bar) # 1: storage
        for bar in base.list() # 2: iteration
        if bar_tester(bar). # 3: filtering
    ]

to each his own I suppose, until the PEP8 police come and get us all!!!
Re:Artificial Intelligence Graduate Certificate on Wednesday February 01, 2017 @11:15AM (#13541904)
Would you provide the actual bit you're interpreting? These are the words I see:

    -------------
    Who is this MicroMasters Program intended for?

    The MicroMasters Program in Artificial Intelligence
    is intended for those who have a Bachelor’s degree in
    Computer Science or Mathematics and have a basic
    understanding of statistics, college level algebra,
    calculus and comfort with programming languages.
    -------------
I don't see it mentioning anything contrary to the above statement. The micro-masters wouldn't be a full fledged master's degree, but could allow admission to receive a full masters (per the below):

    -------------
    Complete, pass and earn a Verified Certificate in all
    four courses to receive your MicroMasters Credential.
    Learners who successfully earn the MicroMasters
    Credential are eligible to apply to the Master of
    Computer Science program at Columbia University.
    -------------
Maybe I misunderstood you.
Re:HandBrake 1.0.0 Released on Monday December 26, 2016 @02:08PM (#13259352)
odd how checking for updates via Handbrake's in app update checker (is there a better way to write that?) fails to see any newer version. So I had to get it via their website. Meh.
Care to share any of the minecraft courses you had your son do? Particularly the more successful ones. I'm homeschooling and would like to get my kids on that train since they're already enamored with Minecraft. I'm just not interested in paying for something they'll end up ignoring.
Re:Highly Available Block Storage on Wednesday July 13, 2016 @10:33AM (#12086407)
Oh I guess I thought ceph was all about eventual consistency. I didn't know it was strongly consistent like what I expect from block storage.
Re:Highly Available Block Storage on Wednesday July 13, 2016 @10:16AM (#12086272)
Ceph is not block storage -- ceph is object storage
Re:Highly Available Block Storage on Wednesday July 13, 2016 @10:12AM (#12086251)
There are limits - they are marketing their simplicity by avoiding complicated pricing schemes. This is typical DO, and I see that as a good thing especially if you're just dipping your feet into the concept. The past year or two that we've had block storage at Codero we've been marketing the ability to set your own IOPS with even our smallest blocks (1000/2000/3000 iops). That said I'd be interested to know exactly what performance they offer because they are definitely cheaper.
Re:Highly Available Block Storage on Wednesday July 13, 2016 @10:01AM (#12086184)
The purpose of the block storage in this instance isn't about giving your vm/droplet more space. It's separation. That way any data that's on that device can be attached to another vm/droplet. It probably would be more cost effective just to upgrade the vm/droplet if space were a concern. It's at least how we've marketed the same feature for the past year or two via Codero's portal. Not to say I don't like how DO has entered the space: keeping it simple.

Not disagreeing on anything, just clarifying that the power plant may or may not produce carbon.
Re:Elixir concepts for Go developers on Saturday October 17, 2015 @10:29AM (#10404460)
In all seriousness, if you want to learn Elixir, learn Erlang.

Couldn't we have said the same thing about Objective-C with regard to C? I'm not trying to be confrontational, just trying to understand why anyone would say that one should learn the foundation instead of the abstraction? It would be nice to have some concrete reasons delineated or even referenced. I have been searching to find them because I've more than once come across the above criticism, but I've never been able to find anything besides gut reactions. If there are any real obstacles the smarter among you perceive then I'd like to know to avoid them.

this ^^^^ especially with regard to companies. At least in the company where I work, the inability to self host is a deal breaker. Is this different for many/any?
Re:July 2015 was warmest month ever recorded on Thursday August 20, 2015 @12:52PM (#10093068)
While I see your point, the forecasts for past weather are based on data very different from forecasts for tomorrow's weather. The former is for past occurred events and the latter is for future probabilities.
Re:IPython 4.0 Released on Wednesday August 12, 2015 @01:13PM (#10049086)
so when Jupyter does the next upgrade will it be called IPython 5 or Jupyter 5.0 (or 2.0)?
Re:Dropdowns Should Be the UI of Last Resort on Monday July 20, 2015 @01:28PM (#9917568)
at the very end of the article it states "All these alternatives to dropdown menus don't mean you should never use them in a user interface design. Well-designed forms make use of the most appropriate input control for each question they ask". The from/to airport, at least, is a candidate for dropdown. The point of the article is that it's best not to default to "what works", and approach "what's works best" or what's most appropriate for the data to be input.
