News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

majorbugger

Unusable because of (lack of) performance. I have a laptop with a dedicated GPU...
I think this proves we are absolutely ready to hand over our businesses and lives to our AI overlords!
Re:It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta on Monday September 07, 2026 @05:00AM (#49595852)
It's still used for stuff like events or groups
Re:It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta on Monday September 07, 2026 @04:35AM (#49595616)
Honestly, the world has grown past the need for Meta. I would not cry if it completely shut down, problem is, what will fill the void? It would be nice to have something not controlled by Big American Corporation (or Chinese, or any, for that matter), but somehow I don't see it happening.
While at that, let's also get rid of all the cultural differences (which can cause problems during such interactions) because it's gonna be more peaceful
Way to completely miss the point of the article.

For many people this might make a massive difference. But people are not equally sensitive to caffeine.
Re:Measuring developer productivity with the DX Core 4 on Monday July 27, 2026 @05:12AM (#49066965)
Could be worse like crossover
I mean, what's the worst that can happen? A complete takeover of the box by a hacker via prompt injection or something similar?
Re:Agent-talk: Enabling coding agents to work together on Thursday July 16, 2026 @02:49PM (#48938602)
My agent has full autonomy when it comes to spinning up new agents or talking to them so it's not an issue
Interesting approach to exfiltration but that can't be prevented really because of lethal trifecta.
Re:Why Write Code in 2026 on Sunday July 12, 2026 @03:54PM (#48884103)
I have also never used punch cards, what does it prove?
Re:Why Write Code in 2026 on Sunday July 12, 2026 @03:05PM (#48883630)
Why is this even a legit question? I need to keep writing code to stay relevant, not to forget my craft, be able to review code... So many reasons. AI doesn't change a thing.
Re:AI Built a Nuke and Still Lost on Tuesday June 23, 2026 @08:22AM (#48643882)
Nothing, because the question makes no sense.

Yeah because LLM "experiences" the game

Why is this whiny post even upvoted lmao
Re:Amazon Says Its Data Centers Use 2.5B Gallons of Water on Thursday June 11, 2026 @11:31AM (#48491737)
Let's see the recent Guardian article: The UK government vastly underestimated the climate impact of artificial intelligence, it has emerged, after officials raised their estimate of carbon emissions from AI by a factor of more than 100.

According to new data quietly published this week, energy use by AI datacentres in the UK could cause the emission of up to 123m tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) – about as much as generated by 2.7 million people – over the next 10 years.

That latest figure replaces a previous estimate – since deleted – that claimed emissions would reach a maximum of 0.142m tonnes of CO₂ in a single year.

Re:Amazon Says Its Data Centers Use 2.5B Gallons of Water on Thursday June 11, 2026 @11:28AM (#48491687)
What angers me on the other hand is calling something "performative" while completely ignoring the facts. Have you checked the projected impact of new data centers on CO2 emmissions?
Yeah nah it's yet another security risk. There was an article recently about Claude Code desktop installing some browser files, it wasn't a hole per-se but doesn't make the whole thing trustworthy.
The corporate overlords are becoming too benevolent these days! Why not monitor employees' thoughts in real time?
Re:NPM packages from Red Hat have been compromised on Monday June 01, 2026 @11:06AM (#48357842)
I would like to meet the person behind the "postinstall scripts" idea and try to understand how they thought it was a good idea.
Re:Using AI to write better code more slowly on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @04:15AM (#48276697)
You have very optimistic assumptions about AI. Of course AI will not "replace you" on its own, but some person in the company will decide it.

Does it mean we can play Doom on WinRar?
Two of my paperwhites died so i took the opportunity to switch to kobo and couldn't be happier.
I don't understand this logic. You can live with 8 GB but there is nothing to "appreciate". It's enough for some stuff but totally short for other stuff.
Re:Programming Still Sucks on Thursday May 07, 2026 @03:16AM (#48046402)
Yes it does. Typical example - layoffs to make to stock perform better.

Re:Meetings Are Forcing Functions on Monday April 27, 2026 @10:23PM (#47929835)
As a developer I have absolutely no qualms with the weekly meetings and since we're fully remote, it's actually nice to be in touch with my team mates, even if they talk about the part they're doing right now for a while.

What I had issues with in the past is forced daily meeting (on top of other meetings) that just created stress and fatigue for me. Starting my day with a standup was literally the worst way to start it ever.

Re:Code is run more than read (2023) on Friday April 10, 2026 @11:29AM (#47719611)
Which is great until you have to make changes to this kind of code, not to mention a massive refactoring.
Yeah, it's annoying to have good support for dates in Java since 2014, instead of only getting it now like in JS.
