Re:Discord is ditching Electron and its new app uses less RAM on Thursday November 05, 2026 @04:19PM (#50384595)
I share the intuition but pragmatically if the codebase will only ever be interacted with through AI agents it probably is nothing and wouldn't matter anyway. You can probably even generate an exhaustive amount of documentation instantaneously if you are concerned about a human knowing their way around.
Re:Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf] on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @11:56PM (#49620733)
Every other paper in existence has been ingested with 99% of writers not knowing it will be retroactively used for training. But session data which is disclosed as being used in terms of service is disgusting?

If the work is duplicative/derivative then the preprints they put in sessions can be shown by the users and we can see.

Re:Maybe you shouldn't install new software for a bit on Friday May 08, 2026 @04:11AM (#48060164)
Having casually read into a few recent incidents the vector has often been outside of software. A lot of mis-configurations or simply attacking the human in the chain. And nation states have basically unbounded resources for everything from bribes, insiders, and even standing up entire companies.
On his staff page he's described as a "leading scholar in the field of tax law". Maybe he was the one that got FTX on QuickBooks after having been paid for 11 months there.
Re:Crypto Firm FTX’s Ownership of a U.S. Bank Raises Questions on Thursday November 24, 2022 @01:43PM (#33734829)
It is an alleged massive fraud going on a public relations tour pre-trial, which not every defendant gets. I guess we'll see if NYT allows him to sail through it sympathetically.
Re:Making the dislike count private across YouTube on Wednesday November 10, 2021 @02:56PM (#29179762)
I have found videos that were marked disliked by me that I never intended to dislike. Pretty sure it was all from trying to scroll on mobile and a click accidentally getting registered.
Re:“I will slaughter you” on Friday February 19, 2021 @07:57AM (#26192628)
The sentence: 'You built a formula 1 race car and tossed the keys to kids'

Suggests he doesn't even comprehend that curl amounts to 'instructions to copy data'

Re:“I will slaughter you” on Friday February 19, 2021 @07:49AM (#26192564)
I disagree with the idea that sharing a singular name of someone you had a conversion with is doxxing. Especially one voluntarily sent without a prior agreement that the email conversation would remain private.
>As developers we are no longer seeing our actions as “politically neutral” and are starting to understand the power we yield collectively to make positive change to our industry.

The only thing it changes in the industry is who gets a contract.

Also legal action can require the admin to have access to obtain this stuff. Also thanks to FOIA, there are government orgs that are required to comply with public requests for copies of emails.
Re:Mapping Coronavirus, Responsibly on Thursday February 27, 2020 @02:44PM (#22437008)
The explanation would be the desire to sell GIS products in a particular region.
Re:Li Wenliang on Tuesday February 11, 2020 @04:04PM (#22302826)
As big of a challenge as this is, the party has more control now than it ever had before. Control from technology but also control from social structure and how they teach people to think.
Re:Are Passenger Jet Engines Hitting Their Technical Limits? on Tuesday November 12, 2019 @11:14AM (#21515214)
Biotech is still in its infancy and mastering DNA would open up a new frontier where humans can edit the genetic code to what makes a human. Assuming it isn't universally banned.

The only truly depressing future to me is if interstellar travel really is as hard as it seems to us now. There kind of needs to be a physics/propulsion discovery on the order of magnitude of electricity or the journey can only be feasibly made by the immortal AI robot race that replaces us.

Re:How TikTok censors videos that do not please Beijing on Thursday September 26, 2019 @09:09AM (#21080565)
They (generally) don't think like that because they are taught an extreme sense of nationalism/collectivism.

Anyone with enough money to emigrate has a much stronger incentive to stay and play along with the system.

And Sherpa laborers hauling heavy oxygen tanks up ahead.
Not to anyone who matters because they will never know.
Re:Want to Stop Fake News? Pay for the Real Thing on Friday February 01, 2019 @10:31AM (#19054869)
People are more willing to pay to have their own views and beliefs confirmed to themselves over factual reporting.
Re:Saudi Women, Tired of Restraints, Find Ways to Flee on Friday January 11, 2019 @04:31PM (#18887291)
They are used to treating women like children who never grow up. There is always a guardian in charge of them. It is crazy to read they've set up a website to send notifications and disable family members from travel.

They only just allowed women to vote/run for office a few years ago, and women to drive last year. This is a great produced piece by nytimes as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ8WPHj6Nhw

I've watched a bunch of his videos a while back and he said he had a day job in the tech industry. But basically he's said he wanted a tesla without paying $$$ so he bought some salvage vehicles and did it as a hobby.

But with his channel starting to take off he might have transitioned to a youtube career. At this point he's probably funding a lot of it via youtube income.

Just my personal anecdote but a vast majority of the Chinese students I've known do not want to stay after their degree. A couple have rattled off the statistics on the huge advantage they have in the job market back home with a degree from the US.

Not that I'm arguing against immigration reform, though. Just playing devil's advocate.

Re:Three Charged in Fatal Kansas ‘Swatting’ Attack on Thursday May 24, 2018 @05:07PM (#17148417)
He instructed other people to delete tweets/messages after learning someone died to cover up what happened. That seems like obstruction and conspiracy to me.

I think it is a stretch to call tweeting a wrong address "wire fraud" though.

It is just a result of poor planning, technically they are two separate accounts. https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/2016/...

They did add an option so you can change your personal account's email address so you don't have to deal with account namespace issues.

Re:Atlas, the Next Generation [video] on Wednesday February 24, 2016 @05:05AM (#11165650)
How poignant is it for the HTTP server displaying you this page to continue responding to HTTP GET no matter how much the humans request it? It just doesn't have anthropomorphic shape so it will never be referred to as 'him'
Re:Show HN: Spot the Drowning Child on Tuesday July 28, 2015 @05:08PM (#9964489)
Well hopefully it would be an impetus to learn to swim instead of instigating dangerous situations that floatation devices put non-swimmers in.
Re:Driver caught using cell phone jamming device on Wednesday April 30, 2014 @04:33PM (#7676207)
There are building materials that naturally block/reflect/absorb mobile frequencies which is perfectly legal.

That is different from transmitting a signal to jam which is highly illegal.
