Re:What Happened to the 100000 Hour LED Bulbs? on Wednesday February 06, 2019 @02:07PM (#19098546)
And the same may be said about the products we make today 40 years from now. Survivorship bias is the logical error of concentrating on the things that made it past some selection process and overlooking those that did not.
Where is the reference implementation?
I don't see why that warrants taking the github repo down.

Just try and compile this simple program:

> println("System");

It gives this error: "At line undefined, the submission failed to compile with the error: Error: Sorry, but you may not use the keyword 'System'"

This tool has a list of blacklisted words that can not appear in your source code.

I want a product that comes up with new product ideas.

Is Hacker News the new reddit now? Should I start posting graphic memes?

So I just tried out adioso on a desktop. It wasn't as responsive as I hoped.
Re:Ask HN: Do image hosting sites remove redundant images? on Wednesday August 29, 2012 @10:07AM (#4448570)
Well, technically a file system is a specialized typed of database. NTFS has some support for removing duplicate files and replacing them with links. Windows server 2008 calls this feature "Single Instance Storage".
Re:Replacing text in the DOM… solved? on Thursday July 05, 2012 @09:04AM (#4202824)
This bookmarklet uses xpath to replace every plain text 'the' with 'ye'.

javascript:d=document;x=d.evaluate(‘.//text()[normalize-space(.)!=\'\']‘,d.body,null,7,null);for(i=0,l=x.snapshotLength;i<l;i++){t=x.snapshotItem(i); t.data=t.data.replace(/the/gi,'ye')} void(1)

sudo apt-get install ruby-full build-essential rubygems apache2 && sudo gem install rails && rails hello && cd hello && rails generate controller hello && rails script/server && wget http://127.0.0.1:3000 -o -

Wait, that didn't work. I got all kinds of errors and warnings. I must have the wrong version of something. You win, point taken.

There should be an easier way. I should be able to just run "apt-get install rails-easy" and have a system that is completely configured for development.

Pigments can sometimes be stubborn things. But I find that folks tend agree that darker greens are 'greener' than lighter greens. So for best results I'd use a dark green with a glossy finish. It should produce the greener hue that you are looking for.
Re:Ask HN: Best way to react when your tech demo fails? on Tuesday June 12, 2012 @12:06PM (#4101110)
Prepare a demo video ahead of time. If the actual demo fails, show the video in its place.
Re:Ask HN: What's the easiest way to add invite codes on Friday June 08, 2012 @11:34AM (#4084656)
Well, provided that this doesn't need to be highly secured. You could base invite keys on some property of the verification code. For example, you could design a system where a code is valid if the sum of the first five digits is equal to the product of the next three digits.

A system like that is easy to code and requires no database. The downside is that your would be relying on security by obscurity. For something like an invite system that may perfectly acceptable.
