By "cocky" you basically mean not completely paranoid?

It is a strange word to use in this context.

Rational expectations?

I mean I can list a 100 points to prove what a stupid article this is but I am too busy picking out parts to build this super computer for like $1200...

People with the mindset of this article need to get some antidepressants and try working out. You are obviously not putting things in the proper context.

Ya'll can put your money in exotic parrot stores and funeral homes. I will stick with the Nasdaq 100.
It just makes me sad how the country united when 9/11 happened and this has completely shredded us.

I mean I am sure these were completely unbiased studies....I would think any thinking person can tell the content is bullshit just from the headline.

As a centrist, both liberal and conservative media is absolutely disgusting.

Re:Robinhood Has Gamified Online Trading into an Addiction on Thursday June 25, 2020 @11:08PM (#23648286)
These were not special hotels, this was a feature like getting free breakfast today. This is how crazy the 1920s thirst for stock speculation was.

Not just betting on stocks but betting on stocks with huge leverage too. You want to bet on a $100 stock then go down to the hotel lobby and put up $10.

Re:Robinhood Has Gamified Online Trading into an Addiction on Thursday June 25, 2020 @10:59PM (#23648248)
You realize in the 1920s many hotels had a bucket shop in the lobby that you could place a bet on stocks?

Pretending this is something new is really laughable when things were 100X crazier literally a 100 years ago.

Re:Robinhood Has Gamified Online Trading into an Addiction on Thursday June 25, 2020 @10:57PM (#23648240)
Absurd article. I first traded stocks during the dot com bubble. People have barely caught even the smallest amount of speculative frenzy the past 20 years since.

I don't think we will ever match the level of addiction people had when online trading was a new thing.

What am I signaling if I say I don't believe in Santa Claus?
Totally agree. This is just peeling the skin of an onion.

Who are the people in Russia that help Snoden live his day to day life anyway? Of course you can make the argument that of anyone in the world, Snoden has no choice...however then it just becomes an argument as to what constitutes not having a choice.

What about if I just don't care?

I totally understand if you think less of me for this perspective but at least I am honest.

I legitimately do not care.

I just don't get how Youtube recommendations are so bad. So often it recommends me things I have already watched.

Or the algorithm knows I like David Bowie so recommends me "Changes". The most boring possible recommendation it can give to a David Bowie fan.

I really wish it had a setting to up the daring of the recommendation. It seems designed to just never recommend something that I would really hate but in doing so it never recommends me anything all that interesting.

Re:An even worse anti-encryption bill than EARN IT on Thursday June 25, 2020 @12:21PM (#23642396)
We need to just start with getting rid of being ruled by ridiculously old people.

Bill Pascrell almost certainly remembers where he was as a kid when he found out Hitler had been killed lol. Are you kidding me?

Re:Google Blew a Ten-Year Lead on Wednesday June 24, 2020 @07:38PM (#23635115)
Not to mention they lucked out that DuckDuckGo is called DuckDuckGo.

I just can't believe such smart people could believe that is good branding.

What exactly were the brand names they rejected to go with DuckDuckGo?

I am overweight, love candy, chocolate, ice cream, both sides of my family have a history of diabetes.

How could you possibly tease out that covid triggered diabetes in me when I am doing such a good job myself?

I hope the professors and phd student all get arrested when the algorithm classifies their face.
Facebook obviously posses some interesting questions on various topics but framing the debate as Facebook collecting "monopoly rents" is ridiculous.

I haven't used Facebook since 2010 and I have never used Instagram.

If someone in my social network wants to send me some information they have my number and they can txt me. If someone wants to send me a picture they can do the same.

I don't use Facebook because ultimately for me it is completely redundant.

To call Facebook a monopoly is an analogy at best. You are not going to solve these problems through analogy though, these are uniquely new problems.

I don't know how you really measure that though.

I am white and I have never once had a "good" interaction with a cop. Quite the opposite.

Actually, I am pretty sure there is a massive difference in experience with cops if you are a white woman vs a white man.

Re:Ask HN: How are you holding up? on Tuesday June 23, 2020 @12:56PM (#23616641)
I don't remember where I read it or if it is even true but I just remind myself that people had to resort to eating bird shit during the black death.

People had no idea what was killing their loved ones and we had the entire genome sequenced for covid in a few weeks.

In the grand scheme of things I am doing absolutely fantastic.

Re:I Am Deleting the Blog on Tuesday June 23, 2020 @08:37AM (#23613049)
IMO we need some kind of data driven media/data driven reporting/data driven newspaper type thing.

Then we can have reporting/debate/conversation on the meaning of the data but without the filters we use to have in place all reporting has essentially become meaningless, untrustworthy, opinion pieces.

How do you show how nice your house is that way though?

Just to piggy back off basketball and practice, this video of Steph Curry practicing shooting 3s for an hour from a few months ago just puts things in perspective for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqIRDgNoKBU

A best ever at something doing the most simple drills for an hour.

I have in my head I suck at basketball but Curry takes more practice shots in that video than I have in my life.

Re:Cameo's CEO on how he plans to disrupt Hollywood on Monday June 22, 2020 @05:09PM (#23606699)
To Catch A Predator guy saying almost anything for $50 sounds like the greatest service ever.
hah love the sarcasm.
I think it depends on how much you like being social too.

Not interacting with people, not having a place to go, just being in the house all day is absolutely terrible for my long term well being.

If my place goes full remote I would have to consider renting an office.

Re:Remembering Windows 2000 on Monday June 15, 2020 @05:39PM (#23533312)
I loved Windows 2000 but it is so long ago.

KDE plasma with the windows like menu is just better in every way. I use to have a dual boot into Windows 10 but even that has been gone for a year or two.

Re:Incumbents, Not Startups, Are Regulatory Arbitrageurs on Saturday June 06, 2020 @10:33AM (#23439440)
I was just reading a statarb paper this morning.

We really should have came up with a different word and left arbitrage alone back in the day.

I can't remember the last time I read about an arbitrage that was actually an arbitrage.

Now everything is basically "garage sale arbitrage". I bought a piece of junk at a garage sale and sold it on ebay for a profit. "Risk free profit", cha ching. Just a total corruption of the actual concept.

I get it though,it is a great word.

The problem though is that people under 60 running through streets with joyous abandon could be what actually causes the least amount of total death in the long run.

Keeping most of the population who is not at risk from developing herd immunity is lengthening the time of exposure for the people who are at risk.

Just the fact we haven't updated our strategy at all after getting data on the age distributions is pretty bad.

Re:Amazon refuses to sell book on Covid-19 and lockdowns on Saturday June 06, 2020 @09:30AM (#23439040)
If this book is a conspiracy theory then Standford's entire Hoover Institution is also. https://www.youtube.com/user/HooverInstitution/videos

That has been the most reasoned, data driven debates I have found since this all started and the narratives are basically nothing like the consensus in mass media.

Re:A world that's designed to make you sad and angry on Saturday June 06, 2020 @09:22AM (#23439004)
The only social media I have is twitter. I have had it since 2014 but I have never tweeted anything.

I think I follow 15 people right now and for me it is perfect. I will sometimes try to add new people but the moment someone posts something political or if they pass a threshold for posting too much useless content I instantly block them. I also don't follow anyone I know personally and can just txt them.

For me, my twitter feed is a phenomenal resource and an absolutely life positive thing. The problem though is the whole platform would collapse if everyone used it as I use it.

I have started using DuckDuckGo more and more but the biggest issue I have with it is that DuckDuckGo is such an incredibly poor choice for the naming of a search engine brand.

The results almost seem better in many instances for what I am actually looking for. We are never going to say "Just DuckDuckGo go it" though. It sounds just so stupid.
