Did anyone aside from terminally online edgelords cheer for that though? I don't know that I saw anyone serious celebrating his death, certainly no members of congress. I do find it odd that the reaction from twitter and reddit bottom feeders (and the likes) stirred you so much. For me politicians actual vile comments and complete indifference to the assassination (or attempts) of state representatives and their families is much more disturbing than what people on some Sopranos meme subreddit had to say about Kirk - but perhaps the Hortman's were those 'others' you mentioned?
Re:Tesla Roadster on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:24PM (#50113154)
I mean it looks cool but considering they haven't produced any of the other Roadster models in any meaningful quantity, and have repeatedly come up short on much more reasonable product offerings... Idk I have just the slightest doubt about a flying electric car hitting the market any time soon. Hasn't it been nearly a decade since the promise of a software update that would turn your Tesla into a self-driving taxi that can earn money while you're not using it?

Believing your system is beyond critique or question, or that anyone who dares must be the enemy, seems pretty commie to me tbh. Like not in the marx textbook theory sense, more in the actual soviet/chinese communist system sense.

I think it’s very obvious that the powers that be are keen to keep people divided and focused on anything but them. Ex: trans issues, trans people have been around for ever, but didn’t start dominating media and politics until about 10 years ago (not long after the global Wall Street protests.) Just mentioning this will send both sides of the issue into a rage (either I’m a genocidal maniac or I support litter boxes in schools, depending on your interpretation.)

UUID is the obvious answer. "d4580737-1168-4399-b747-8a5e7af5fc97, climb and maintain 14000" just rolls off the tongue.
Id want to see who’s funding it before betting. If it’s all private capital, that sounds fair. If its backed by direct government investment or better yet, rate payer increases, my money is they fart around for a decade or so and then the project goes belly up due to poor planning and ballooning costs. and the execs walk away much richer.
Do we really need evidence to draw a line between the US's biggest trading partners boycotting the US alcohol industry and a drop in sales in the US alcohol industry? I feel like the only way you don't make that connection is if you're either severely uninformed or so lost down the MAGA rabbit hole you've forgotten the taste of food, the sound of water, the touch of grass...
I'd worry about farming in Utah or Arizona deserts long before sonoma and central valley.. They're draining rivers and aquifers to grow grass in the desert to sell to even drier deserts in China and the middle east.
Thats a pretty clever work around… sharing a playlist and using the comments on a podcast as group chat, not sure I’d have come up with that. the kids are alright I guess, good for them.
If an AI agent does some crime on my behalf, regardless of whether I explicitly instructed it to or not, I should probably be held accountable right? Same as if I did crime, knowingly or otherwise?

Like if any of us got caught doing what OpenAI apparently has done, we'd be in federal prison pending trial and hoping for a plea deal with some light at the end of the tunnel.

You'd think with tech being a force multiplier and all it'd be real easy for agencies to shed the supposed few and far between 'bad apples'. They should be able to do more with less bodies, with flock and other tech helping them, right? It seems to me the entire system failed this woman and waiving it away as a single lazy cop gives the system a pass.

There is no real mechanism for holding them accountable and the consequences of these tools include death (it only takes one perceived wrong move for officers thinking they've bagged a felon to ventilate you. Hell not even that, see that officer who mag dumped his own car after he mistook an acorn for a gunshot.) This lady is quite lucky that it was only 13 days, if she had a career that's probably hosed but it might not be totally life ruining if she has a strong support system.

Alberta separatism efforts by the US/Russia are probably about to be cranked up to 11.

Haven't they been caught snooping on customers before with their in car surveillance?
Re:AirPods 5 on Thursday September 10, 2026 @07:40AM (#49642034)
oh IDK how I didn't notice that.
Re:AirPods 5 on Thursday September 10, 2026 @07:39AM (#49642012)
Not first party. the ones I get are "foam masters" brand on amazon.
Re:AirPods 5 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @07:57PM (#49636349)
Not trying to convince your anything, just putting it out there for those that are plagued by this, but I had similar issues and memory foam tips solved this for me with airpods. For me they'll stay in if i'm basically motionless, but as soon as I move they're on the run.. With the foam tips I'm able to do basically anything and not worry about losing an expensive earbud.

I'm afraid to try expensive over the ear headphones again after a pair of XM3's started making the most hideous screeching noise right after the warranty expired.

Re:Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:14AM (#49625252)
Is China the example we want to follow though? I thought communist dictatorships were generally considered a bad thing?
Also, if they have nothing to hide, they have nothing to fear.
I get the vibe they're using ALPRs to identify drivers, and then going from there to find crime? Seems like criminal investigations should start with an actual crime. At the minimum, I would think that there would need to be some suspicion of criminal involvement to obtain a warrant to get financial records. Apparently this administration considers driving down the interstate suspicious enough to toss the constitution out the window.
Re:Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread on Saturday September 05, 2026 @10:45AM (#49577028)
It doesn't event attempt to address any of those issues or anything real. American politics is all about keeping the working class distracted and pointing fingers at each other while the ownership class rapes (literally) and pillages.
I feel like if we can throw parents in jail for allowing their children to walk unsupervised, we can probably toss them in prison for giving them unrestricted access to the internet.
I'd say it's not so much "as secure as we know how" and a lot more "as secure as we're willing to pay for". I'm sure this company has competent sysadmins and devs who'd be happy to lock things down. Usually management doesn't want the expense or the hassle.
Re:Google Maps Showing 'Lake America' in U.S. on Monday August 31, 2026 @01:08PM (#49512132)
I hate it, but my guess is if they don't play ball here, they risk losing government contracts or worse, being blacklisted as a "supply chain threat" as they tried to do with Anthropic. Gov't/military canceling GCP and Gemini contracts probably wouldn't do well for their stock.
Flock had some prompts (/queries or something like that) leak and apparently something as innocuous as visiting multiple gas stations after hours within a short period of time could have it's system mark you as an armed robbery suspect.

I think we all have to fear police responding violently because Flock's sycophantic AI system told them with 100% confidence that we're the bad guy.

Doxxing is bad of course but does "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" apply here? Or is that only for us working folk?
>The problem was never power or water

Correct. The problem isn't just data centers or power or water, it's that left unchecked these greedy people will risk the power grid, drain rivers/reservoirs/aquifers, and destroy our natural environment (and cities) with pollution because it's more profitable than doing things the right way. I think more than anything we want responsible, friendly neighbors who are mindful of the impact they have in the areas where they operate.

They're callous, reckless, have no concern for anything but their money. And "self-funded" isn't even true, the tax breaks and negative externalities of these data centers will be paid by the people (see: xAI and Memphis.)

inb4 i'm a chinese operative because I mentioned water. Get bent, I think grass farmers in the desert should be forced to get real jobs instead of exporting our water to China/Saudi Arabia as cattle feed. And people who farm real crops should be forced to convert to less water-intensive methods or shut down.

As a compromise, I call it xitter. The main benefit is apparently in some languages x has a "sh" sound so really i'm just calling it exactly what it is (and always has been.)
Re:Bill Gates: The turbulent AI era is here on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @09:53AM (#49449218)
The resources exist, it's just a matter of allocating them properly. We have lumber and concrete to build houses. We have fertilizer and land and trucks to grow and ship food. And apparently all of this will be immensely cheaper (practically free) within a decade thanks to robotics and AI (according to the trillionaire half this place worships.)

With that said I doubt that reallocation will happen in any meaningful way, and as the elites eliminate more people from the economy we'll descend further into violence and chaos. If the parasite class was generous, they wouldn't be parasites.

Re:Collaborative Human Agent Protocol (CHAP) on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @07:13PM (#49368396)
CHAP's already taken though.
I thought Trump fixed that? Shouldn't caging/deporting 2000+ people a day have a dent at some point? What do you blame when the immigrants are all gone?

Personally I'm pretty sure it's more about the value of property and the limitations on construction that wealthy property owners put in place to block development (which would lower property values.) Property values go up -> costs rise (taxes, insurance) -> rent increases. That and the fact that the government and corporate america (same thing really) want all development to happen within existing major metro areas. There's plenty of cities and towns with cheap housing, but they lack employment opportunities.

Those are relatively new and the president's children have financial interests in them, so they won't see any regulation any time soon. But it's certainly possible they will be regulated in the future... if we ever have a less-openly-corrupt government again.
