Re:Don't Just Say Hello on Thursday September 17, 2026 @05:00PM (#49746500)
Hi is a shorthand for "can you talk" or "are you on screensharing" or "is there anyone looking over your shoulder" or such things

It's not definitely a sign that I'm actually interested in greeting you, or asking about your migraine.

Just something like "how do you do" which is a total nonsense either, so this discussion is moot.

Re:A shell colon does nothing. Use it anyway. on Sunday July 26, 2026 @04:52AM (#49056062)
I usually skip the get option builtin, and use : as...

while : ; do case "$1" in "") break;; -f|-foo) shift; whatever;; *) usage; exit 1;; esac done

For this... instead

  if something; then
     true
  else
     echo ERROR
     exit 1
  fi
Using : would be too much here.

For anything else including json etc. I usually go to duckdb. Awesome support, single file install, readable, easy to maintain.

Powershell on Linux or Unix? Just another huge dependency if you manage 1000s of machines, and good luck finding a Linux gal/guy wanting or able to touch pwsh without chemical grade gloves.

Re:Europe's resistance to AC is driving it insane on Monday June 29, 2026 @11:44AM (#48720785)
Not yet, at least, but close to (thanks, POTUS).

Back to AC... I have to fork out 4000€ to replace an aging AC in a small flat 60sqm (650 sq feet).

Just looking out of my window right now I can see 600 similar places, so that's 2.4mil EUR for a couple of (city) blocks.

As AC is to be added as it won't replace the winter central heating system we got in most condos -- well that's a lot of money.

.... but having all of EU defense including F35s calling in home in Trump US before every mission is totally fine right?
Re:Apple Watch for Your Kids on Tuesday June 09, 2026 @01:34AM (#48456915)
250 bucks. For an 8 yo. Meh.

I see, either everything one here goes to preppy schools, in a perfect Montessori world, vs others working three jobs to pay mortgage and 2 cars.

And the solution is apple watch.

Is this a canary?

What's gonna happen if I were to begin or continue using one letsencrypt certificate from ... Greenland? Cuba? The EU?

Has letsencrypt been served with a subpoena?

Re:SQLite is all you need for durable workflows on Friday May 29, 2026 @04:13PM (#48328583)
There's a wide gap from files to multipartition databases. Running databases in a container is not for me sorry whenever real production stuff is on the table.

Personally, lots of ETL can just be taken care of locally without involving enterprise databases. In such cases, DuckDB is 5x-10x better than SQLite and orders of magnitude simpler/faster than spinning up a dedicated Postgres database.

For general scripting, there's no match between a 20-lines awk script and a much cleaner, robust, maintainable equivalent SQL script based on DuckDB.

I just hope MotherDuck don't need to pump/dump for IPO - it would be sad losing that tool for the usual corporate greed.

Wow. Easy. One MAGA account, one real account. Citizenship!

How do you rate procyon vs these?
Re:Java Decompiler on Wednesday November 26, 2025 @12:38PM (#46060098)
... until you realize that the LLM-generated code doesn't even compile, or you need a PhD to write all the prompts needed to have a prototype instead of the real thing.

Tibet? Never existed?

Meh.

Goodbye first amendment. What's next? Revoking citizenship?

Too many requests. I suspect this article will bump up the monthly hosting bill.
Re:All British adults to require a digital ID 'Brit Card' on Friday September 26, 2025 @01:51AM (#45383128)
I just wonder how widespread fraud is without any form of ID. A fake utility bill is just a few clicks away on my PC.

Govt surveillance? I'm much more worried by the ever increasing number of cameras in the streets rather than something similar to having a passport to prove who you really are.

Re:Not Buying American Anymore on Wednesday September 17, 2025 @12:21PM (#45277841)
I guess it could be extended to any country with similari behavior.

Take the attitude to selling your data at state, country level "just because".

If US citizens love being scr@@d over good for them....

Re:Are people's bosses making them use AI tools? on Sunday August 31, 2025 @01:52AM (#45080680)
I have used my company LLM thingy. Able to summarize and document code leveraging remarks and general code behavior just because LLM just ingested the full python docs.

About generating things well... it just copypastes the same snippets you could find on stackoverflow, including bugs - if the task you throw at it has already been answered.

For complete and complex code... well it spews out the same useless advice you could get from a drunk non expert person while sitting at the bar.

Issue is... LLMs are too big to fail, everyone just poured billions in this huge statistics bean counter, and... someone has to justify those expenses at board meetings.

Re:Fun with uv and PEP 723 on Tuesday June 24, 2025 @11:34PM (#44373420)
Nice, if only you could count on having it installed on your fleet, and your fleet is 100pct Linux, no AIX, no HPUX, no SOLARIS, no SUSE on IBM Power....

Been there, tried to, got a huge slap in the face.

Re:Catalog of Novel Operating Systems on Saturday May 17, 2025 @06:52AM (#44013386)
Too much time on your hands folks. Get out of your cave, enjoy time with family, friends.... life is so short to lose time on designing sth just to make a post on HN .... or God forbid, X.com...
Wow. If not even a tax haven such as Delaware is available, Wikipedia could move to Europe. Ireland, Netherlands, Italy.... pick one, or all of them.

Saludos Trump, amigo...

Re:MinC Is Not Cygwin on Wednesday April 23, 2025 @02:34PM (#43775260)
Especially to package writers that assume bash is available everywhere, hope that bin/sh is the same as bin/ksh...sed -i... not on unices, grep missing a ton of options....

Time to ask an AI ?

Re:MinC Is Not Cygwin on Wednesday April 23, 2025 @01:48PM (#43774731)
How long will cygwin lifetime be?

A proud cygwin user myself, with cygwin in the PATH since the 2000s, I recently sideloaded Ubuntu under wsl.

Right now, wsl is my primary terminal app, I've mounted C:\ as /c, added a symlink to bypass the ugly Onedrive default name, and... I'm happy.

Slowly, I removed 90% of the mixed BAT scripts, converted to bash the rest, and I now enjoy it.

As the old timer that I am, I limp around powershell, so no luck with that.

Cygwin on the other hand seems to be slowly dying, as more and more packages are now unsupported/unmaintained, with Redhat apparently willing to smother it at the first viable moment.

Any thought?

Re:Python's new t-strings on Monday April 21, 2025 @04:03AM (#43749416)
If this is just for sql queries ... it'd be overkill especially where you need to compare the usual PREPARE statements with the hassle of keeping everyone on 3.14 and above.
As a foreigner I cannot comment on this, else I will be rejected at the airport by the ICE.

That's called freedom my friends.

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025) on Sunday March 30, 2025 @05:49PM (#43527992)
Same thing. I was happy (?) until a guy from Minnesota went out of his cage to micromanage me. I took cash and left.

Boss of guy from Minnesota was kicked out of the company. I'm told the guy from Minnesota is now sooooo much nicer now.

Re:Choosing death penalty by firing squad because it's safer on Saturday March 08, 2025 @04:18AM (#43298745)
In general, when will the US stop considering acceptable that... you cannot lie to the police, but the police can lie to you?

When will everyone believe that making someone take the blame in exchange for a shorter time in jail is beneficial to society at large... when the real perpetrator walks away unscathed, and a innocent is jailed for something he didn't even commit?

Sure, and it's not cheap.
Re:Mozilla deletes promise to never sell Firefox data on Friday February 28, 2025 @07:21AM (#43204815)
I'm one of them 2.54% and I cringe when some kiddie develops websites around some chrome bugs, just to let us and Apple folks down.
Re: on Sunday February 09, 2025 @03:25PM (#42993570)
Most of us had a spine, and stopped misbehaving before anything serious was done.

The guy didn't, and no one stopped him from collecting the very same data he could be using or will use to blackmail or worse.

Sorry to note that political allegiance beats common sense.
