Is this sarcasm? I hope so. If not, forget everything that FFF has told you, its nonesense.
Re:We Won't "Just Hang Out" on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:46AM (#50287010)
I am of the opinion that if you have it better then 90% of humanity (which is likely true), you are not entitled to complain. But that is just me.
Re:Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:28AM (#50286882)
No thanks. "I tried to reach you yesterday". "Oh sorry, I happened to walk by an opera house." PLEASE, less, not more automatisms. Everything has a tendency to produce false positives.
Re:We Won't "Just Hang Out" on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:35AM (#50286060)
Thats the way it is when you just started working. 25 years ago, when I started to work, it took me 10!!! years to finally earn enough to have a monthly surplus of a low three digit figure. I finally saving money in earnest roughly 8 years ago. So it took me roughly 15 years to earn enough to finally be able to save some money. Back then, doomsaying wasn't a thing yet, so all I did was hang in there, and, never really complain. Sure, things haven't gotten easier, but really, what GenZ is doing these days is professional complaining, thats all.

> What even is the point of cities in a world without work

Transportation, silly? Even if I didn't have work, I'd still want to reside in a city, maybe even the same city I am currently in. 10 minutes walking distance to the center. 3 tram-lines in 5-minutes walking distance. A supermarket 400m away. All things I didn't have in the rural area where I grew up.

Re:Amazon's "Digital Pacifier" for Toddlers on Monday October 26, 2026 @06:07AM (#50241484)
"over 100 years ago", you wish. The last case I was personally told about was from the 1980s. Yet, regulations and/or taboo didn't help that child. A hopelessly negligent and stupid mother is just that, case closed. And that is pretty much my point. No amount of government regulation is really going to protect the children from the decisions their parents make behind closed doors. And pretending the responsibility is with evil large corporations or the government is only clouding the truth, namely that parents are responsible for their children and what they consume. I am sooo fed up with all these excuses. And I have reasons. My mother wasn't and still isn't the most rational person. And no amount of regulations would have protected me from her mental health issues. It wasn't the fault of the car industry that my mother told me at the age of 14 that she wants me to go with her on a car trip visiting my grandmother because she would prefer me also dying in case she had an accident. No amount of industry regulations would have protected me from the schock I had when I heard that sentence. Openly talking about the responsibilities of parents and not hiding obvious stupidity would have perhaps helped a bit.
Re:Amazon's "Digital Pacifier" for Toddlers on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:26AM (#50241215)
Nobody is marketing a "toddler pacifier" to children. The intended audience is PARENTS. Or do you actually know toddlers with enough financial power to buy their own tablets/whatever? C'mon, the cope is getting really hilarious. I don't really understand where this reluctance to make parents responsible for their decisions comes from? Is it a knee-jerk reaction of actual parents? Why is it so hard to accept that YOU are responsible for most of the things happening to your child until a certain age?
Re:Amazon's "Digital Pacifier" for Toddlers on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:17AM (#50240705)
Thanks for underlining my point. Parents giving gin or cognac to their toddlers are just bad parents, a case for CPS, end of discussion. No need to regulate the gin industry just because there are hopelessly bad parents in the world.

You could appy the same hyperbole to alcohol. Yet America learnt 100 years ago that prohibition isn't really s solution. As much as you might hate it, there isn't really a way around people being responsible for their actions to a certain degree. Besides, comparing technology to heroin on a site like HN is pretty hilarious.
Well, regarding manual labour. Putting aisde the "is working with AI drying out your brain" discussion... Quite frankly, even fast touch-typists like me will never outpace an LLM write a few obvious functions... Isn't that also more or less the same thing as being freed of manual labour. How much of the thinking/design process your outsource to your LLM is a totally different discussion. See vibe-coding vs "pair" programming. But all that aside, I very much feel like LLMs are pretty much saving me a lot of manual typing.
Re:Amazon's "Digital Pacifier" for Toddlers on Monday October 26, 2026 @02:09AM (#50239736)
Child abuse is practiced by the parents who end up deciding to use such a thing. Please don't shift responsibilities away from those who have them. If a parent makes such a decision, they are prone to also do other bad things to their children.
Re:The Fall of Scientific American on Monday October 26, 2026 @02:02AM (#50239695)
It is not often that I have to utter the phrase, but in this context it seems glaringly obvious: Go woke, go broke.
Yes, against guidelines, yet, at least right now voted to the top, go figure.
Re:Grace Hopper Celebration Cancelled on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:03AM (#50085060)
Is a bit like with democracy. Its the best system we have... Everything we, as humans, do, will eventually be unfair, because, frankly, humans are just not fair. Sure, a select few have high goals, and might even DTRT... But thats always just a small group. The rest of us will try to take advantage of others, some coniscously, some unconsciously. Humankind will only be fair once it has ended.
Re:Grace Hopper Celebration Cancelled on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:43AM (#50084893)
Your post would be way less hilarious if you refrained from using words like "bitches" in a post arguing for DEI! Derogatory sexist terms don't really help your cuase.
Re:Grace Hopper Celebration Cancelled on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:17AM (#50084677)
While cynical, there is a lot of truth to your statement. I wish the activist type would realize that they are actually being used, but it appears there isn't much chance they will ever listen to the old dogs in this game.
Re:Grace Hopper Celebration Cancelled on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:56AM (#50084492)
Real equality isn't obtainable. What we are doing currently is just moving things around. The classic case of the vocal minority being louder then another minority. This isn't creating honest fairness, it just highlights certain groups to the detriment of others. Since LGBTQ has become louder, disabled people are being more forgotten again. Accessibility is HARD, so, just cater to LGBTQ and your corporate conscience is magically cleared up. Activists HATE this insight, since they are also blind to the needs of even smaller groups. I know what I am talking about, I am disabled, and I am watching the "landscape" since 35 years.

If your knee jerk reaction is to downvote this, I am not surprised, because, you know, that just underlines my point.

Means "punishment" in german, weird name.
Re:Denmark set to allow return of 'physical force' in school on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @04:25AM (#50068451)
No need for a "culture clash", slapping is out of the question anyway. If a female slapped my child, I'd make sure she looses her job, no matter where she or I come from.
This company is pure evil. And everyone working for them.
Which generates unnecessarily huge binaries.

OK, when I read "hate speech" it was finally clear this article is a gaslighting attempt. Should be flagged into oblivion.
Re:X Is Bad, Though on Monday October 12, 2026 @01:30AM (#50051726)
So... Yuu don't like the guy who bought Twitter and renamed it to X? Thats fine. You dislike him so much that you want to boycott the platform he bought? Fine! Go ahead, show how prinicpled you are, and actually don't use the platform for anything. Neither post to it, nor read anything from it. Thats all fine. But... I am soooo done with this "I want to get clean, so everyone else has to stop, so that I dont feel alone." attitude. I don't care that you don't like X. I haven't used it since almost 10 years. Deleted my account back then, and NEVER looked back. I haven't read a single tweet since, because the web interface is basically unuseable with a simple browser. Thats fine, I am used to being excluded from most of the modern internet. Do I write blog posts asking people to stop using Firefox and go back to lynx? Maybe I should, but nah, its too hilarious. I like it when people have prinicples and stick to it. I learnt to absolutely hate activists, those people that seem more concerned to influence the people around themselves, then their own actions.
Learned Helplessness. Happens alot all around. I see it a lot in disability care. SO much that there is a saying: "Suplemental disability caregiver" (Zusatzbehinderung Eltern). Might be a schock to the more socially oriented people. But the fact is, the more help you allow to be provided to you, the more you forget/unlearn how to handle things on your own. Which in the end, will make you hyperdependant on others.

3 is also relevant in the current consumer hardware "crisis". The more I think about it, the more I realize I dont even want to by anything in 2027. Not just because prices exploded. Sure, thats the initial motivation. But the truth is, most of us have enough stuff lying around at home that we can easily go for the next 4+ years without buying anything new.
Re:What's Earth's dominant species by mass? on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @02:54AM (#49989255)
Why should they nuke an apparently dominant species? Don't you think they might have some sort of Prime Directive? Killing off something because you don't like it is such a 10yo boy thing to do. I expect more from an alien race that is capable of traveling far and observing other aliens.
Re:Protect Your Friends and Loved Ones on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @05:32AM (#49976185)
"Know where your loved ones are at all times" feels like a call for stalking to me. There are boundaries to everything, and they should be respected. "I love you" isn't a sufficient reason to be pathologically close.
Re:Why Common Lisp Is Now the Best Programming Language on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @05:02AM (#49976004)
Are you seriously proposing that popularity == excellence is a thing on this planet? Please can you name a few examples? I can think of a bunch of counterexamples already...
Re:Blindsight (Watts Novel) on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @04:20AM (#49975683)
What do you actually want? Do you think the world would be a better place if I put a "This is my personal opinion" disclaimer in every trivial comment? Blindsight felt silly to me, you liked it, great! Can we move on?
Re:Why Common Lisp Is Now the Best Programming Language on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @04:16AM (#49975656)
This link is fishy. It appears to host TBLOP (The big list of porn) as some sort of invisible div before the actual article you guys read starts. Seems to be a weird form of SEO. Verify? Open the link with lynx, which does NOT honor CSS.
