Re:I used Claude Code to get a second opinion on my MRI on Sunday June 28, 2026 @02:49PM (#48710241)
I'm surprised about the 266 MB of DICOM images, I've never had an MRI but my CT results are generally between 1-2GB (zipped) and I always assumed an MRI would have more data, guess I was wrong about that!
Re:Notes on Apple's Nano Texture (2025) on Monday January 19, 2026 @03:48PM (#46684306)
I don't touch my display on my MacBook and it's always yucky because of the finger oils on my keyboard, so the thought of having to use a special cloth to clean it always seemed like too much of a hassle for me compared to the glossy display. I did wonder if this improved ever since they added nano texture to the ipad pro, but sounds like fingerprints are still annoying.
Re:My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file (2020) on Thursday December 11, 2025 @03:56PM (#46237034)
For me it often still is.. at least when I'm working alone on something / no collaboration needed. Every time I try something else I revert back to this, although sometimes I do save the files, eventually.
Re:Bring true randomness to Spotify with Fisher-Yates shuffle on Wednesday September 24, 2025 @02:11AM (#45356855)
Always reminds me of the time Apple introduces "Smart Shuffle" in iTunes in 2005 which "which lets the user change the “randomness” of shuffled songs".

Re:Whats your max wpm in typing? on Sunday February 02, 2025 @09:56AM (#42909009)
If I check on monkeytype it's around 130wpm but as others have said it really depends on what you are typing.

(for what it's worth I learned to touch type on an old typewriter decades ago, however my wpm was much slower then as the typewriter would lock up if I typed too fast)

Back in the day I think most people got their apps from the PalmGear website (https://web.archive.org/web/20010331040533/http://palmgear.c...) and sync it to their Palm device via HotSync (later Palm Desktop)
Re:Cancer Rates Are Rising in Young People on Monday August 12, 2024 @03:45PM (#41228489)
I had a very mild pain on and off again that I assumed would go away and waited with going to the GP way too long.
Re:Cancer Rates Are Rising in Young People on Monday August 12, 2024 @01:02PM (#41226720)
Yeah if possible get screened and when in doubt about something in/on your body please get it checked. I also had to suffer through chemo this year because of metastasis – had I checked sooner I might've gotten away by just having the surgery and no chemo. Last chemo was two months ago, still have side effects, mostly neuropathy. Compared to other patients I shared rooms with I still consider myself lucky but definitely an experience you want to try and avoid (unless you need it, of course). Now hoping my next CT is clean.

I can't comment on causes as I'm not a doctor, in my case all the known causes did not apply to me.

I can't put my finger on it but I don't find this enjoyable to read at all.. so I don't know much about readability claims here. Maybe I'm an outlier.
Re:Dear Europe, please wake up on Tuesday April 30, 2024 @01:47PM (#40213793)
I have never seen a 3+ month notice to quit in the country I live, curious which country this happens in? Sounds extremely ridiculous if true
Re:Palm OS and the devices that ran it: An Ars retrospective on Thursday April 25, 2024 @09:29AM (#40157307)
I loved Palm since my first, the IIIe SE and have had many of their other later devices too. I was even invited to the launch party of the Zire 71 with it's cool slide out mechanism! Oh and the Tungsten|T when it could finally play MP3s was very neat, and another sliding mechanism making it more compact. Ah memories, well back to my non-distinctive slab of glass.

I was also interested in the Sony CLIÉ's running PalmOS but never tried one. And of course the Psion's also seemed really cool but never landed its way in my hands.

Re:Most dating apps sell and share users' personal data on Tuesday April 23, 2024 @10:28AM (#40132403)
I care a lot about my privacy and this was one of the main reasons I didn't want to use dating apps. But I also didn't want to stay alone and meeting people in meat space (maybe I shouldn't have called it that) also didn't work for me, so I did end up using one of these apps. Luckily it worked and I clicked delete as soon as possible.
Re:EU tells Meta it can't paywall privacy on Thursday April 18, 2024 @09:53AM (#40076264)
I never accepted the new terms in the Instagram app, it keeps asking again every now and then but you can get around it for a while and use the app. I'm very curious whether that means they are using my personal data for targeted ads or not, but I also don't remember the last time I saw an ad (maybe became blind to them)
Delta for free in the regular App Store everywhere but the EU where we have to download a paid app store to install it, so it begins.
Interesting! When I got presented this list Safari wasn't even "above the fold" which surprised me, so I assumed it was randomised.

When I clicked Safari it also opened an App Store sheet for Safari, which I thought was weird but probably done to keep it consistent with the other options (more like "see more details" before making the choice definitive/installing)

Re:Vector: A high-performance observability data pipeline on Monday March 18, 2024 @06:37AM (#39742257)
I only learned about vector after I had setup a new fluent-bit pipeline, and have to say there's a lot of stuff that looks interesting in vector and wish I had time to play with it earlier. Might still do it when I have some downtime, it looks very interesting and capable, could be fun to try on a new project.
Meanwhile everybody you exchange e-mails with doesn't care about any of this and unless using E2EE all your email contents will be known by their e-mail providers anyway.
Without even looking up statistics or searching the web the easiest answer for you; ever hear of iOS / iPadOS and how every browser is Safari underneath and not everyone installs update (or uses devices that can't be updated); like elderly people who are also real users? Yet it is also (depending on region) the most popular mobile and tablet platform?

FYI This is my last reply to you, you're just looking to be proven right it's not a useful discussion.

You mean nesting like this proposal? https://www.w3.org/TR/css-nesting-1/
There is no definitive way to answer your question. It depends entirely on your target audience and how much effort your company is willing to put towards support a, I will admit, likely minority. Some of us need to.
Yeah but only in evergreen browsers once they implement it.. plus now you are making the browser do more work compared to just having simple CSS files that don't have to do complicated things.
This looks terrible. Is this really necessary?

I feel like purists who write CSS by hand don't want this kind of stuff, because otherwise they'd have switched to one of thousands of preprocessors. And people who use preprocessors and/or elaborate styling systems that take care of this stuff already.

Maybe I am getting too old and out of touch though.

Re:Show HN: I made a game to improve my typing speed on Friday January 05, 2024 @11:51AM (#38881216)
Fine I'll try despite having a painful hand right now, my WPM mention was not coding specific btw but I am always happy to help a throwaway account; I got "You can type 80 words per minute", and slightly more pain now.

The biggest thing that got me here is that it doesn't match my coding style and especially whitespace at line endings were annoying. Also I'm on the couch on my laptop, not behind proper desk.

Re:Show HN: I made a game to improve my typing speed on Friday January 05, 2024 @11:29AM (#38880905)
My parents forced me to take typing lessons on typewriters in the 90s and I am thankful they did, of course that had some technical limitations in regard to speed but it definitely made me a great blind typist which is the main foundation for typing fast in my opinion.

Some years later in school I also had a typing class at some point and the teachers thought I cheated because of my high scores so I had to take the test again with multiple teachers hovering over my shoulder – I scored slightly higher then.

I'm usually around 120wpm, which I know is not even a great score amongst typist but it's more than enough for me. I couldn't play the game due to an injury right now unfortunately, but I did click through it and agree with others that I prefer practising words or sentences - plus the letters appearing on different spots on the screen is annoying to me because that's not how I type, so I'm not sure if this is really great for typing practice (for me, at least) – but it could be good at becoming faster at blind typing maybe?

Re:I am the fold (2015) on Thursday December 28, 2023 @08:40AM (#38793364)
When it does load it looks like this could've just be a static site, so it's interesting to see it being a serverless function that crashes the whole time.

But yes, the idea of designing for the fold is from early 2000s (or i guess I should say pre-2010 in my experience) and should stay there.

Re:Validating Data in Elixir: Using Ecto and NimbleOptions on Tuesday November 07, 2023 @08:01AM (#38176252)
Hm, I hadn't heard of NimbleOptions before and always used Ecto's embedded_schema for these types of things (as also mentioned in the article).

Looking at NimbleOptions based on this example I think I would prefer to stick to Ecto because I don't like the idea of putting the schema in a giant keyword list - but maybe soon I'll have a better play around with it myself, read the docs and see if there are better ways to use it.

Re:Validating Data in Elixir: Using Ecto and NimbleOptions on Tuesday November 07, 2023 @07:57AM (#38176216)
Wish it was different but realistically I feel like you are right (outside of Elixir specific communities).

I love working with Elixir and have done so successfully for the past 4 years at various companies, however I have been trying to find a new client for a while now and I'm getting close to the point of looking for other types of work because things are looking bleak. From what I can tell there are also way more people looking for Elixir work than available jobs, unfortunately.

In my 15+ years of software development in various languages Elixir has been the most enjoyable developer experience for me. So I guess I'll just have to think of a side project where I can apply it and do less fun stuff to earn bread.

Re:Julia Evans: Git rebase, what can go wrong on Monday November 06, 2023 @12:06PM (#38165267)
what do you think git pull --rebase does..
For me Hinge proved most successful out of everything I tried, it gave me the most matches that actually resulted in real world dates and eventually to finding my current partner of almost 3 years now.

N.B. I only ever use free versions as I do not believe in paying for these apps so cannot speak to paid versions.
