Re:Ask HN: How did you land your first job? on Saturday December 09, 2023 @01:37AM (#38579260)
My brother referred me to a summer internship. After that, 1 or 2 years later I joined a "students work" company who placed me at a web development agency, and I worked there part time during my studies for more than a year. Tried to do some of my own projects after that for 2 years, continuing my studies (I was a bad student, it took a long time for me to fail out of university).

Moved to the UK and submitted a lot of CVs, did the take home test, and one hired me as a web developer. This is what I'd consider my first real job. It was a nice job with nice people.

Re:Ask HN: Which headset do you use for work? on Sunday November 05, 2023 @05:35AM (#38149910)
I use it with an intel macbook, it works just fine, as you'd expect. I encounter no issues.
There is already a company which is doing similar thing in the UK for Wind Farms. I can't find the name right now though, they were featured on the Fully Charged youtube channel.

I am not in the UK, and I'd gladly invest in a solar farm as a "community member" to cover my own usage but in my country noone is doing it - and probably I would not trust them either (eastern EU). I was actually looking for this a few weeks ago, and the only thing I found is that I can sponsor some African farms through some EU scheme.

In any case, if someone knows some good solar farms which have this community ownership model, I'd be happy to check it out.

I think the Wind Farm was this one from Ripple: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65rlHr6ey4I

I just got my first iPhone, without a charger. Now I have a MacBook as well, which has my only charger having USB-C out (and the ports on the machine). I find it pretty funny that I have to use an older Apple device with only USB-C ports to charge a newer Apple Device with a port I only have one cable for and have no charger to plug that cable except the MacBook. By Apple's thinking only has these ports because that's the future but somehow they missed to put these on the iPhone.
For anyone who is suffering from this, or on some days finds it hard to sleep I recommend Science and Futurism With Isaac Arthur podcast.

It has "Narration Only" versions of all episodes and it is very interesting, so if you can't sleep you can listen to it but it will not have harsh noises.

Also Philosophize This has the same properties (very old episodes have some loud music).

Let me know if you know similar podcasts.

Re:Teamspeak 5 to be based on the Matrix protocol on Tuesday January 12, 2021 @02:51PM (#25752469)
I tried Mumble but it was lacking in something, maybe the push to talk did not work properly or the echo cancellation was not working? I can't really remember now.
Re:Teamspeak 5 to be based on the Matrix protocol on Tuesday January 12, 2021 @09:22AM (#25747216)
Teamspeak is still the best when it comes to chatting when gaming, it is usable with voice activation, push to talk and it has so good echo cancellation that it works when both of us are on speakers.

Though the current version uses almost a full core on my machine, it's still worth it in my opinion and you can find many free servers you can connect to.

Re:Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project? on Thursday May 14, 2020 @02:12AM (#23175991)
I am making a self hosted or maybe hosted website where you can just import youtube/your videos and you get a link to a podcast feed. None of the existing ones worked for me and I like to listen podcasts before sleeping, and there are a lot of channels which don't need the video part.

It's not public yet, but let me know your thoughts about the idea.

Re:Why We Sleep, and Why We Often Can’t on Tuesday January 01, 2019 @04:38AM (#18799559)
I like to think about scifi stuff when I can't sleep and someone recommended audio books in one of the comments. There is a podcast by Isaac Arthur about science and futurism, and he provides narration only versions. Honestly this is a miracle for my sleep.

It's very interesting and because it doesn't have music and loud sounds it will not wake you up if you fell asleep.

(I think there is a bug in soundcloud where the RSS feed does not show past a few tens of older episodes? Not sure where to get all of them)

I think you can import the URL into your podcast reader.

Re:Timeline of the far future on Wednesday July 18, 2018 @01:39PM (#17560410)
He publishes it in a podcast format as well without the background music, which I am very thankful for.
Actually, I am happy they are sending these. I hope it is really working and they will delete my data as there was not one I approved again.

Job recruiter sites were asking me if I allow sending more emails and as it is practically impossible to unsubscribe from them I will be glad if GDPR makes them stop.

It's possible that your site's IP was used previously for some other sites and it was indexed as http://IP/... now google will retry to fetch the urls for a time.

Maybe you have someone's domain resolving to your IP. Seems to me that nginx is resolving the IP to the default site in the config.

That's why I had a custom script which always set the counter to zero for HipChat. The numbers are very annoying. We had a Lunch room where people discussed what to get for lunch, and it had a counter near it's name. Also reseted the tab counter.

It's literally 5 minutes of googling, it was the 5th result for her name. Not sure why is this so big of a problem?
You mean like bluetooth? :)
Re:ThinkPad X1 Carbon on Saturday December 31, 2016 @03:33AM (#13290161)
I am guessing is that when he started working on this stuff docker was in it's infancy (still is IMHO), and had no reason/time to port it.
Re:A Git catastrophe cleaned up on Wednesday December 21, 2016 @08:49AM (#13229020)
So if I get this then he just added the files to master, then tried to work on the topic branch?

That really seems weird. I don't think it's git's fault. Also he could have done git merge master --accept-theirs if he really wanted some kind of history but I guess it would be worthless.

Re:Ask HN: What is your favorite internet rabbit hole? on Monday October 24, 2016 @10:47AM (#12779245)
Currently my favourite time wasters are learning channels on youtube. Especially not the "weird" ones like VSauce because I think those are pretty unwatchable. I like SciShow / SciShow space even though that's borderline weird :)

My current fav is Sixty Symbols, endless very interesting videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvBqzzvUBLCs8Y7Axb-jZew

Also PBS Space Time, MinutePhysics, MinuteEarth.

Usually when you ssh into the machine to fix something broken then forget to backport the changes to the ansible script.
I am planning to buy a similar setup, just a tablet with a keyboard running Windows 10, I wonder how expensive this laptop in a box would be.

Quite expensive but may be worth it, I am looking at this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Teclast-Windows-Andriod-Tablet-Prote...

It really helps when renaming methods for example. I am not sure how much it helps with extract method.
Re:Is Self Hosted Blogging Dead? on Thursday January 21, 2016 @05:19PM (#10948931)
I changed my opinion when I checked out their homepage, usually if you go from HN or reddit it's a higher quality post but when you go from the homepage you can get a glimpse of the average post. It just lost that kind of credibility feeling for me.
Re:Should more OEMs cater to the small smartphone segment? on Monday December 28, 2015 @12:12PM (#10802107)
Android removed support for reflow after 5.0 I think.

I would be happy if they would bring it back, until that opera mini still works, except for embedded browser views.

I think I have the same problem.

For example I knew that I want to look for a new room. I couldn't start it because I did not know how much time it would take. This makes it really hard to start.

When I finally started I just said that I'll do it until 8 pm or something. This makes it easy to not stop cause "oh it's only 30 minutes I have to do this then I can go take a shower".

This is why I think techniques like pomodoro can really help someone. It's just hard to start something, and more you do it, more you know what's left. Usually this stops the fear for me.

I don't know but they removed the reflow from the browser used in Motorola E 2gen and for me who only uses it for reading on the tube this almost made it unusable.

I can only read in horizontal mode or scrolling left and right on every row.

I set opera as the default browser because that supports it but apps like Pocket are unusable for reading stuff like HN comments.

According to them it's a wontfix.

This makes me so angry, I wish I wouldn't have upgraded from a Huawei G510... I feel I wasted my money on shit.

Re:Type-safe routing in Spock on Sunday April 19, 2015 @04:07PM (#9404651)
When I tried out the play framework that was one of the "woah" moment when I discovered the typesafe routing. It is really good, and it automatically generates the routes from controller methods.

It's like a whole new world of generating urls.

Re:The Emularity on Saturday January 24, 2015 @04:24AM (#8939225)
It is not even that, just some people like the "errors" in the playback. They say it makes it sound warmer.
Re:Oliver Heaviside on Friday December 26, 2014 @06:16AM (#8798638)
After I learned signal processing at university I always thought that the Heaviside step function was named like that because the step is "heavy" or something in the signal.
