Social media for children should be moderated by their parents, full stop. End-to-end encryption exists. You cannot un-invent it. It is trivial to roll your own encrypted chat service.
From the About page:

I wish this person all the best, but most of this is incredibly out of alignment with how I wish programming / engineering culture would evolve.

I want repairable, affordable, light-weight vehicles with as little software as possible.
Re:Have a Fucking Website on Wednesday March 18, 2026 @08:30AM (#47424906)
Every day on instagram I see people post pictures of text w/ words that are partially or fully obscured from view; presumably censoring themselves or others for the sake of the algorithm. Make a website, post what you like, be free.
Re:Roblox Is Minting Teen Millionaires on Wednesday March 11, 2026 @09:54AM (#47335613)
I remember how hard I had to lobby to get my parents to agree to ~$12 a month (that I paid for with 2 weeks of my allowance) for EverQuest.

Geohot is a bit of a jestermaxxer, but you really haven't presented much of an argument to support your conclusions.
Re:Global warming has accelerated significantly on Friday March 06, 2026 @03:58PM (#47280972)
I never said their (or your) points weren't valid. In fact, I think they are quite self-evident and well known. People are assuming in bad faith that I'm unaware of these facts or that I sought to mislead with my original comment.
Re:Global warming has accelerated significantly on Friday March 06, 2026 @01:32PM (#47279067)
People like to get worked up about this topic haha. All I'm sayin' is, it might get a lot hotter. Or maybe it will get cooler? I think it's important to put things in context because it's not some monotonically increasing function even if there is a local trend. I'm pro doing what we can to correct our impact on the environment; I'm even pro going beyond and attempting to control for other non-human externalities. My point is actually that nature doesn't care, but I think we should. Although, even if we try our hardest, we still might not like the outcome.
Re:Global warming has accelerated significantly on Friday March 06, 2026 @11:43AM (#47277367)
It's my understanding that if you look at a large enough historical time window, although warming has accelerated recently (and we are in part to blame); the Earth is still relatively cool compared to historical averages.
Re:Where things stand with the Department of War on Friday March 06, 2026 @11:26AM (#47277060)
I wish people still knew how to compromise when it's in their best interest to do so. Heads up for those that live in a fantasy land: They are going to create both autonomous weapons and mass surveillance with AI. It's better to have a seat at the table than to cede to your biggest competitor (of even more questionable moral / ethical character).
Now the turbo encabulator on the other hand...
Re:Claude is an Electron App because we've lost native on Friday March 06, 2026 @10:48AM (#47276465)
> Finally, the last hope of people longing for native is performance. They feel that native apps will be faster. Well, they can, but it doesn’t mean they will.

I guess we just shouldn't even try. Obviously the web is a good platform for some apps and a terrible one for others.

Re:Agentic Engineering Patterns on Friday March 06, 2026 @09:17AM (#47275165)
In most cases, the model is non-deterministic and you have no direct control over the input parameters. At best you might get access to some abstraction of a subset of those parameters. I don't know of a coding model that offers direct access to the seed. I like to hear about how people are using agents, but it also feels a lot like someone sitting at a slot machine telling you that if you put your shoes on the opposite feet then you win more often.
Do whatever you want with your app, but you should be punished if you lie. Saying E2E encryption makes users less safe is a lie.
Re:Glaze by Raycast on Thursday March 05, 2026 @11:17AM (#47263517)
So... can you explain why I wouldn't just use my own models and workflow? What does Glaze actually do? It looks like it has a private and public "store" where you can upload your apps? Can you explain to me how this is different than say, uploading my source / binaries to a server which is connected to the internet?
I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but we've seen quite of few pages from the Sam Altman book so far. It's hard to not recognize patterns of behaviour.
I predict that anyone in the know will be running local models before this happens. You want to provide a terrible service? Well, I will roll my own. A tale as old as time.
Tells you a lot about where their focus is at as a company.
When I was a kid, my parents installed Net Nanny on our home computer. I installed a keylogger. No more Net Nanny; lots more EverQuest.

I don't like age verification in general, for anything. The age gates in our society are very subjective.

Many times my Dad would buy alcohol at the grocery store w/ me (underage) in tow, but they never asked for my ID or refused to sell to him. Now, when I go buy alcohol as an adult with my wife (we are both in our mid-late 30s) they ask to see her ID as well as mine? If she leaves her ID at home then she has to wait in the car because they will refuse the sale if she comes into the store and cannot prove her age.

Buying a case of beer with a group of 8 year olds? No problem. Bottle of wine for you and your wife? Let me get both IDs.

Re:UK to force social media to remove abusive pics in 48 hours on Thursday February 19, 2026 @09:59AM (#47074491)
I'm not a fan of forcing sites to police themselves. As far as I'm concerned, that's what the police are for. Simply removing such an image does not necessarily mean that the uploader is being held accountable. This also only affects the lowest of IQ predators while creating an additional barrier to entry (regulatory capture) for anyone that wants to run their own "social media site".

Can we also get a legal definition of "social media"? Is that really just as simple as "services which allow multi-directional communication"? Hate to break it to them, but the internet proper is, itself, a service which allows multi-directional communication. No matter how many walled gardens are created, the 1s and 0s will continue to flow unimpeded.

Re:The End of the Office on Thursday February 19, 2026 @08:32AM (#47073540)
Lack of training data in narrow domains is definitely true. I'm hopeful though, AI seems like it should mesh well with the problem. One of the biggest wins for me so far is just how quickly I can build and iterate on visualizations of the data. It has cut down enormously on the amount of time that I'm asking myself, "but why is this the schedule?".
Re:An AI CEO said something honest: ExperiencedDevs on Thursday February 19, 2026 @08:12AM (#47073362)
Yeah... I think you've hit the nail on the head. Technical is probably too broad of a description. It's never made sense to me the amount of people leading software development in some capacity that have never developed any software, let alone any within the domain they "lead".
Re:OpenAI Should Build Slack on Tuesday February 17, 2026 @10:56AM (#47048898)
If I worked exclusively with technical people, then I wouldn't need to use Slack (or Teams, Webex, Jabber, etc). I can't ever see myself paying for an application like that.
Re:An AI CEO said something honest: ExperiencedDevs on Tuesday February 17, 2026 @09:32AM (#47047882)
This is why I always champion technical leadership. Many, many people seem to think this is unnecessary, but I think it's common sense. The layman might see building software like building a house. We know basically all the components of the house, we know we need to lay the foundation before raising walls and installing a roof. Software development is nothing like this. You can add a roof before the walls, you can dig an entire basement before providing any method of descending into it from the ground floor.
Re:The End of the Office on Tuesday February 17, 2026 @08:40AM (#47047371)
I'm not sure the people writing these articles actually use AI outside of trivial benchmarks. Sure, it can create "a website" in minutes, but what does that website do? I've found (I'm working on vehicle routing and maintenance scheduling) that you very much have to have a plan in your head and an understanding of what's going on in order to build towards reasonable results effectively. There is no replacement for knowing what you want, how to ask for it, and how to verify the implementation. That takes expertise. You cannot tell AI, "We fired the engineers. Take over their jobs and do them better." That's a non-starter.
Re:I’m joining OpenAI on Tuesday February 17, 2026 @08:25AM (#47047251)
OpenAI wants OpenClaw because OpenAI is not hype anymore. That's it. I've been pretty put-off by OpenAI though, so this will likely reduce my interest in OpenClaw.
Re:ai;dr on Friday February 13, 2026 @09:58AM (#47003435)
Not all AI generated content is bad, not all of it is good. I find a lot of people are taking hardline stances on something much more nuanced. This is Hasty Generalization and Fallacy of Composition.

I wish all OSes just came with a reasonable TWM.
Re:Rivian R2: Electric Mid-Size SUV on Wednesday February 11, 2026 @10:19AM (#46976014)
My friend has the R1S, he likes it a lot, but he's also got a lemon law case open and is hoping that Rivian will have to take the vehicle back. I rode in it and it's nice, but it's way too big for me. The R2 sounds like a step in the right direction, but it still looks too large. I had to shop cars recently and I bought a Golf R. The Golf is "mid-size" to me. I moved across the country in a packed Golf GTI.
