This is the point the "just build more supply" folks never mention. Close to markets, water, aesthetically pleading single family houses on land. Like there's a reason housing crisis only happens in popular cities, because well, they're popular for a reason. Also people shit on zoning laws (yes they could be better), but I'm sure they dont want to live in hong kong style back to back concrete mega apartments with no parks
Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft

It's just a never ending balance problem. Also the "just build more housing" is such a numbers only view. Anecdotally, everyone I've talked to hate budget cookie cutter apartment complexes; they're ugly, neighbor problems, noise, pets, etc. What people really mean is they want a single family house sitting on land, but you just can't have both.

iOS apps at google are developed via ciderv that had a connection to your local mac, and it's amazing. All code editing is "online" and builds are cached, but simulator runs on your local machine. I'm convinced the apple dev env at google is like 100x better than apple's

I feel like core dev team learned a lot about actually enabling a web based ide for line 100k engineers across the globe for a gazillion line mono repo. ciderv is really just a skin for the amazing infra. Which is also why I think there was less resistance to the change

Re:Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview
on Friday February 20, 2026 @10:13AM (#47089000)
It's so weird. I actually prefer the web version for generic questions like "how would I do X in git" or something, and it'll answer it well. Gemini CLI will immediately try to run git log on the entire graph, grep every single file in the repo, like just answer the question. I actually put in gemini.md to just answer first without running other commands unless explicitly requested and it's been a lot better

But the thing is your local gov & economic policies (tax codes, bonds, projects, trade) matter to your actual daily life and retirement far more than left v right. They just play that game to keep you enraged and baited. And people do actually care about gas, groceries, and inflation; they just don't vote in their own objective interest
Re:LLMs could be, but shouldn't be compilers

Are LLMs not already compilers? They translate human natural language to code pretty well now. But yeah, they probably don't fit the bill of English based code to machine code

Re: the custom domain catch all reply, this is a bit annoying but there js a workaround. I made a SendGrid account which allows me like 100 sends per month, and I can reply in Thunderbird via SendGrid as any email account. Annoying to boot up Thunderbird, and I haven't found a way to do this on my iPhone, but I don't need ti reply from a throwaway frequently so it's sufficient for now.

That's probably where things are headed and there are already products trying this (even photoshop already). Just like how code gen AI tools don't replace the entire file on every prompt iteration.
Re:A Definition of AGI
on Sunday October 26, 2025 @08:25PM (#45716214)
Yup, I feel like the biggest limitation with current AI is that they don't have desire (nor actual agency to act upon it). They don't have to worry about hunger, death, feelings, and so they don't really have desires to further explore space, or make life more efficient because they're on limited time like humans. Their improvement isn't coming inside out like humans, it's just external driven (someone pressing a training epoch). This is why I don't think LLMs will reach AGI, if AGI somehow ties back to "human-ness." And maybe that's a good thing for Skynet reasons, but anyways

Re:Charlie Kirk shot at event in Utah

You're really trying to convince me people care about kids but we've been having school shooting for 30 years? And that the length or frequency of events makes them okay, or not worth mentioning? So 30 years of more frequent assassinations should be make similar types of events okay? To use "you're probably one of those" and "argue in good faith" in the same comment is pretty wild work.
Re:Charlie Kirk shot at event in Utah
on Thursday September 11, 2025 @02:26PM (#45214609)
Exactly. Sure call this whataboutism, but someone a kid losing a father is tragic, yet kids themselves getting shot are now regular desensitized events we just say "thoughts and prayers" and move on? Give me a break. Kirk wasn't even an elected official, yet I've never seen 2k+ comments nor posts about other shootings on HN. Kirk died doing what he loved, defending what he loved, so I love that for him.
