Re:Ask HN: What are some resources to improve speaking skills? on Thursday October 31, 2019 @01:08PM (#21411070)
I transformed my life by participating in Toastmasters for about a year an a half. Here's the thing, to get good at something you need the following..

* Training * Practice * Feedback * Show up and do it over and over again

Toastmasters provides all four of these ingredients.

Re:A man who linked CO2 to climate change in 1895 on Thursday September 19, 2019 @07:59PM (#21021966)
To bad you core premise is incorrect. CO2 is not the driver of global temperature changes. If it was then ice core samples would show this. The ice cores show something completely different. The ice core data shows that CO2 levels respond to temperature changes. So temperatures go up and then hundreds of years later CO2 levels go up. Temperatures go down and then hundreds of years later CO2 levels go down.

What does drive global temperatures then? It is that huge ball of gas and fire in the sky commonly called the Sun.

So other then your core assumption being wrong your write up sounds interesting.

Re:It's time to replace GIFs with AV1 video on Thursday May 09, 2019 @05:27PM (#19872602)
The issue is that very often the "good enough" solution is what sticks. Gif are good enough and the world is not in a hurry to adopt a replacement.
Re:When Henry Ford Doubled His Minimum Wage (2014) on Thursday May 02, 2019 @07:45AM (#19806824)
Ford doubling his minimum wage is simply an example of capitalism (not government) raising wages. This is why capitalism is the greatest economic system (by a mile) ever devised.
Re:Questions About Food and Climate Change, Answered on Wednesday May 01, 2019 @02:43PM (#19800309)
Food production has zero to do with climate change! Cow farts have zero to do with climate change!

If you think otherwise you are an idiot. There is zero scientific evidence that shows a link between farm animals and climate change. Zero!!!

All this reminds me of a great Winston Churchhill quote...

"The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is."

Re:The Samsung Galaxy Fold's display seems to have problems on Wednesday April 17, 2019 @05:14PM (#19686536)
I had the iPhone 4. The antenna was a non issue.
There is zero evidence that CO2 effects climate. Zero! You are one ignoring facts.
Did you know that Canada was once a tropical climate? I'm just saying it's possible that the earth's climate has been changing for billions of years and will continue to change after they take away our freedom by placing a tax on energy.
Re:Changes to the Red Hat Certified Engineer program on Thursday April 11, 2019 @09:21AM (#19634178)
I don't see the data science bubble bursting. Data is the fuel of the 21st century economy and I don't see that changing.
Re:Why I Quit Tech and Became a Therapist on Monday March 11, 2019 @06:38PM (#19363564)
I so agree with you. One thing I will add. If you commit to excellence in something you will most likely fall in love with it.

And anyone who down voted this comment is clicking the "I am a moron" button.

Anyone walking around with the idea that having kids is bad is a moron.
I think I'll go grab a diet coke.
State of Fear is a great eye opening book. The parts about how the news media exists to keep is scared is very enlightening and true.
Re:U.S. Oil Production Is 23 Years Ahead of Schedule on Thursday January 24, 2019 @09:46PM (#18995128)
Sure let's stop consuming fossil fuels and go back to the stone age. All for a scientific theory that has zero evidence (save for computer models that are always wrong).
Re:Another Week with Bad Software on Monday September 24, 2018 @10:57AM (#18058211)
I agree!!! Software does 10,000 things correctly. Then people complain when one thing doesn't work 100% perfectly.

Unfortunately I believe this is no longer being updated and is not available.
Re:New StackOverflow code of conduct on Wednesday August 08, 2018 @10:52AM (#17716420)
Here is an important key to written communication. If someone doesen't understand your written message, the problem is not with the reader. The problem is with you (the writer).

I write clear Stack Overflow question and I don't have the problems you describe.

Learning styles is a myth..

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2017/mar/13/teachers-n...

I used to believe this nonsense myself.

Technical sales might be a good career path. Or perhaps technical recruiting. While these are sales jobs very often you can make more then your average software developer.
You know what's a cool job? Working at a great job doing interesting work... and having a schedule where I leave at 2:30 PM and pick my kids up from school. Then I get to spend the evening with my kids, playing with them, going to the pool with them, doing homework with them, reading with them, etc.

That's a cool job!!!

That was my experience. I went from the local community college to the top University in the state (currently a top 10 ranked public University) and found the the teachers at the community college were in most cases superior to the University professors.
Re:Jim Black's Steve Jobs Story on Friday May 18, 2018 @10:25AM (#17101694)
I think Elizabeth Holmes belongs in prison. However, I read her bio and she was a genius on par with Jobs.
Re:The Silent Type: On Ulysses S. Grant on Monday May 14, 2018 @06:27AM (#17064259)
Sherman would have been nothing without Grant. He was a complete failure as a general (he spent time in a mental hospital) before serving under grant.

And another thing I don't like about Sherman is he was a racist event by 19th century standards. Just about every white person in the 19th century (Lincoln & Grant included) was a racist by our modern sensibilities, but Sherman was very racist).

Re:Concorde ‘B’ on Monday May 07, 2018 @11:19AM (#17013367)
My 10-year-old son is obsessed with Concorde. I'm going to send him this article.
Re:C Is Not a Low-Level Language on Tuesday May 01, 2018 @12:01PM (#16968217)
If the general public & tech community refers to C as a low level language then it is a low level language.
I worked for Lloyds TSB around 2003/2004. In banking the domain knowledge (banking & finance) is more valuable then the technology knowledge. There was a guy at Lloyds who couldn’t write a line of code, but he know every field and every column and what that field meant and why it was there.

This guy was as close to unfireable (is that a word) as it gets.

I just want to share my story. My son always seemed to be behind his classmates. He's a bright, articulate, has an excellent spoken vocabulary, and a has wonderful sense of humor. He just always seemed to struggle in school through the early elementary years.

My son especially struggled with reading. In an effort to help him with reading, I spent huge amounts of time forcing him to read different books. I used Anki to help him memorize difficult words.

I did help him, but by the fourth grade he was still behind his classmates

Everything changed one day when I decided to back off and instead read to him (and my daughter) every night for pleasure. I stopped asking to read part of the book. I tried different books and quickly my son and daughter started to enjoy the nighttime ritual of being read to.

About half way through Roald Dahl's book the BFG, something clicked in my fourth grade son. He started reading the BFG on his own. Then he started to read during school downtime. When I'm driving him somewhere he is often now reading books in the backseat instead of playing games on his iPad.

My point is reading fun books to your children can help them fall in love with reading and thus make them want to read.

If I could give any advice to new parents is to read to your children every night (maybe take weekends off :-) ) and try and just have fun reading interesting stories to them.

Hopefully my son has found a lifelong love of reading, which will serve him well.

I recommend Kahn Academy if you want to go back and relearn math.
About 15 years ago my company made a long term investment in hiring software developers from India.

Early on were some of them terrible developers? Yes, but so are many United States based Developers.

Now 15 years later I can tell you that my India based coworkers are some of the best developers that I've ever worked with.
