Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @06:59PM (#50331263)
Is there any good GUI for a vanilla Linux networking stack, to your knowledge?
This was a completely vapid article. I expected some technical details at least, but instead it's an LLM generated poem confirming it worked in a short interval, which nobody doubts it would. All eyes are on long term heat dissipation and the impact of radiation and success of radiation hardening meterials and processes.
I know I tend to like some takeaway "summary" comments on HN, but this one just feels like snippets from an LLM reading the article. What's the thinking? The original text isn't particularly long or dense, and this isn't commentary.
Re:Biltong.ai on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:02PM (#50297474)
I'm not quite sure how this relates to AI, which without any context past the domain name I think it's fair to assume there should be.

Ah my bad, sleepy morning on my end.
Re:Giving chat feedback gives Anthropic your data on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:10AM (#50260542)
In what way are you "ensuring" it? They still have a plaintext copy on their servers and could ad arbitrarily decide to train on it (for instance, saying it raised a safety flag).

That link is speculation at best. I wouldn't tell my family yet not to do that. Insane if true, but let's not jump at speculation.
It can be both, one situation to the next.
There's a section at the bottom called "History & Use of AI". Please do your part to keep the discussion here honest and healthy, if not a read of the post, at least a ctrl-f would have been sage.
I'm getting an error loading the page.
I'm not sure what more to do then to annoy my friends and family and speak with my MP (done), who had already voted against it. Canada's political system seems healthy compared to the USA, but it doesn't feel healthy objectively.
It's not really your argument, but to be clear nobody is actually claiming the US followed Israel into war with Iran because of oil.
Re:RuneScape Bench: MMOs for Agents [video] on Monday October 19, 2026 @02:36PM (#50156133)
It certainly was my first taste of programming and stoked a lifelong interest in computers which has served me very well.
Re:MiniMax M3.1 Flash on Monday October 19, 2026 @02:04PM (#50155727)
Odd choice to have a mix of opus 5 and 5.5 in different graphics.
Re:Mercury 3: Diffusion at scale on Monday October 19, 2026 @01:40PM (#50155396)
I'm very curious what the actual model size is and how the training process differed from a traditional LLM. Cool work regardless, incredible how catching up to a few months behind the cutting edge now seems like an achievable feat for new entrants, if still quite costly.

forgot the second comma after '"bought"'
Re:AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:09PM (#50091085)
I would argue this actually pushes up the desire for such games. We'll be inundated with games at decent/good games, and our standards will adjust. Maybe something an imperfect analogy would be watching a decent tv series at home but going to the movie theatre for a Dennis Villeneuve movie.
Re:AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:19PM (#50090137)
Other comments have mentioned it, even in this thread, but I am fairly certain the biggest change this will bring about (very, very sadly) is games and software from big companies being hosted server-side and streaming in content like some video games now do.

This is the future I always wanted, full control over the hardware and software I "bought" but I think we will end up lamenting our moment of empowerment in one way as the time we lost even more agency in the end.

Personal computing is increasingly under threat by government and big corporations, we all need to be vigilant and fight back.

Re:Thunderbird for iOS on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @08:03PM (#50080675)
I get this, but most email is through Google and Microsoft in NA, at least, neither of which seem to care to support JMAP at all, on fact they are getting locked down more and more.
I am astounded by the activity in this repo... what is going on? 508 PRs on 408 commits..? It's getting additions at a frenetic pace by a large number of contributors.
Re:DuckDB Ducklake on Thursday October 08, 2026 @04:19PM (#50011575)
Why program greenfield in C++? I know "made with rust" is a meme but seriously, why not a memory safe language in 2026?
Re:What ArtCraft's Vibe-Coded Apps Say About Adobe on Thursday October 08, 2026 @04:07PM (#50011364)
Why would they suck the oxygen out of the room? This sounds like claiming a new distro of Linux made by new rufugees from Desktop Windows for people accustomed to Windows desktops is harming Linux by ensuring they don't go to some existing flavour which defaults middle mouse paste and thinks everyone must go on a spiritual journey of becoming one with cli tools in order to set up their social media and documenting editing machine. New people are making something they want and are empowered to make something they want, not something we've all been grateful for but bemoaned as a comparise.

For example, I love GIMP but holy shit it was a downgrade from Adobe in most ways.GIMP should stay GIMP, though, I wouldn't want my tools being completely overhauled in terms of UI and workflow anyways. I'm sure the old heads who put TLC into it would be strongly against someone using AI to significantly rewrite it at base, but also changing the interface and how it works significantly enough to matter to users. It's a sad way how it's been gone about, but in a sense this new software is building on GIMP (among many, many others) shoulders by developing openly and allowing the lessons on how to do things be adopted and not re-learned.

Their entire point is that this is OSTENSIBLY the point.
Re:Supabase Is Acquiring Turso on Friday October 02, 2026 @12:59PM (#49935823)
Best tested..? The test data/suite is private. That alone is quite odd.
This is a poor take and reads like a strawman. The post is mentioning locations 2 miles from one another varying by almost $2USD for the same product.
Re:Cloudflare K2: serverless event streams on Thursday October 01, 2026 @11:53AM (#49923348)
If I was a serious Cloudflare customer I would be seriously concerned about the security of my infrastructure with them. Yes LLMs can code fast but this is an almost frenetic pace of releasing new products, all with fewer staff.
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @05:28PM (#49914719)
What? You mean the technique they had turned OFF during all training run where the agents they are responsible for hacked huggingface?

And a stake in SpaceX
Re:It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs on Monday September 28, 2026 @08:18PM (#49886280)
Listening to Dwark's interview of Noam last week was bewildering. The gall of the figureheads for these companies to say things like "chain of thought monitoring cannot be relied on without potentially poisoning the well", while also saying "we need to pace the frontier but please still trust us [and so called" independent " 3rd party firms which at least in one case is actually a significant stakeholder in Anthropic] to self police" and THEN "chain of thought monitoring was turned off but we have 'more, robust monitoring tools in place now'" is absolutely insane as it is coming out live that your model in training is still committing felonies.

Corporate influence in government in the USA is wild.

Re:HomelabFest will be in St. Louis in September 2027 on Saturday September 26, 2026 @02:55AM (#49853945)
I wasn't aware he's publicly said anything like this, but I've always assumed he was quite religious so I'm not particularly surprised.

To be fair, this is a pretty tame and measured expression of disapproval of the modern societal acceptance of homosexuality. I honestly don't know what more I could ask for, in modern societal discourse, for someone I disagree with in terms of how they go about expressing it: the links I read seem to imply he was honest, polite, and clear on his feelings, not inciting hate, violence, or spewing vitriol. Jeff's views are his own, and maybe the crux here is that I don't see politely disagreeing about the righteousness of living homosexually as remotely severe enough to warrant this much attention considering the quality of character of a lot of public figures visible to those of us outside the USA.

I admit seeing a response like this irks me as I feel it needlessly detracts from the mission. That said, it's both A) fair and a good thing to judge and critique any public figure's character and I do think public figures and their views deserve scrutiny, and B) a means to continue to allow powerful people and groups to assassinate the character of and dilute the message of people who run contrary to their goals. I'm genuinely torn on how to feel about how to feel here. I worry we allow ideas to be discarded at the first sign of something we disapprove of in people who share them -which is wrong-, yet several of my best friends are queer and I also could not stand to see them trod upon. Those same queer friends all have views and personality flaws which would be judged just as harshly by others.

Regardless, I don't like you using my excerpt that way. Not everyone's views of "community" mean the classic cancel culture era idiosyncratic definition whereby anyone in any role remotely resembling leadership must share the same specific set of homogeneous views on political and cultural issues to be given any member's "consent" to lead a group. I stand by what I said and still do believe Jeff is an excellent advocate for these ideas. There are obvious limits, to be clear, I would never go to Toastmasters if the local club head spoke about killing jews, but this isn't that and IMO there are so, so many more important battles to go fight out there than this.
