Re:The Eukaryote, the First Cell to Get Organized on Wednesday October 30, 2024 @06:28AM (#41993467)
The first cell with a surviving lineage to get organised. There could have been countless other 'attempts' that, for one reason or another, failed to get established, or died out before they could leave a trace in the fossil record.

And even that Bill was refused assent as Parliament asked Queen Anne to do so as they wanted to make some changes to it.
Re:In the gut's 'second brain,' key agents of health emerge on Tuesday November 21, 2023 @08:04PM (#38373165)
The enteric nervous system certainly evolved first!
Re:The Piccadilly line’s new air conditioned trains on Tuesday November 21, 2023 @11:22AM (#38365729)
I can't remember a time when I didn't know the word, but then I grew up near London so used the Tube regularly as a child.
I like how the phrase "I didn't say she stole my wallet." changes meaning completely depending on which word(s) you emphasise.
Re:Two Supermoons in August on Wednesday August 02, 2023 @04:44AM (#36968528)
People think of "Tuesday night" as the night that falls at the end of Tuesday, however the majority of it from an astronomy perspective tends to fall after midnight (particularly with daylight savings time), hence it's referred to as the 2nd.
Re:Copy is all you need on Monday July 17, 2023 @12:08PM (#36759934)
Beat me to it, I was going to go for "X Is All You Need Papers Considered Harmful"
Re:HashiCorp just let go 8% on Thursday June 08, 2023 @06:54AM (#36239814)
I know at least one affected engineer there.
You do know Boris hasn't been in charge since last July, right?
Oh, they take full responsibility, it always says so in the mails they send out. It's just that taking responsibility doesn't appear to actually result in anything happening.
Re:Tether's USDT Stablecoin Slips from $1 Peg on Thursday November 10, 2022 @08:35AM (#33546161)
It's a common term for a stock market in non-English speaking countries.
The success of the "Cursed Child" stage show seems an appropriate parallel here.
The "elves will take our jobs!" scene in Numenor was pretty overt.
Re:Bank of England warns of material risk to financial stability on Wednesday October 12, 2022 @01:33PM (#33180265)
Removal of the 45p tax rate would cost around £2bn, which is peanuts compared to the amount spent on the COVID furlough scheme, for example. Calling it "wild tax cuts for the wealthiest" is political posturing.
Re:The Strid: The ‘deadliest stretch of water’ on Thursday September 22, 2022 @07:29AM (#32937449)
The oral traditions of the Klamath people describe the eruption that turned Mount Mazama into Crater Lake 8000 years ago, too.
Re:‘The Rings of Power’ has inexplicably terrible writing on Tuesday September 20, 2022 @03:13PM (#32916457)
During the time that scene was set there _was_ no light in the sky, all light came in sideways from the Two Trees.
Re:‘The Rings of Power’ has inexplicably terrible writing on Tuesday September 20, 2022 @03:09PM (#32916412)
Right! When they unironically take the "Dey took 'er jerbs!!" line from South Park with zero awareness of how ridiculous it was in context. Why would the Men of Numenor be worried about elves stealing their jobs when no elf had set foot there for many, many years?
Re:Queen Elizabeth II has died on Friday September 09, 2022 @06:37AM (#32777600)
The last Queen of England was Anne, after the Acts of Union in 1707 she became Queen of Great Britain, as the position has remained since.

Amusingly, Queen Anne was the last female head of state of America, too.

Re:The World Has Passed ‘Peak Agricultural Land’ on Friday August 19, 2022 @05:55AM (#32519155)
Right, and the fact that that wood is destined to be harvested means it's not really long-term carbon storage, either.
It is my understanding that the question was pre-recorded and submitted in advance, the 'fault' seems to lie with the moderator who selected that one to be answered.
Parts of that section are open to the sky, too, so not really under the ground.
Re:The Wisdom in Kung Fu Panda on Wednesday March 23, 2022 @01:03PM (#30780644)
An apology that came twenty years too late!
Re:The world of PostgreSQL wire compatibility on Thursday February 10, 2022 @08:42AM (#30285833)

Just to note, MS have long published the details of their wire protocol, TDS - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/openspecs/windows_protocols...
