Re:How Satya Nadella turned Microsoft around on Friday October 23, 2020 @11:11AM (#24870287)
100%. A lot of these things were set in motion under Ballmer and he tee'd it up for Satya. That doesn't excuse Ballmer's missteps and of course Satya deserves credit for a lot of the execution, but I think people like to latch on to the simple narrative of Satya Good, Ballmer Bad.
Re:Amazon Will Buy Target This Year, Gene Munster Predicts on Tuesday January 02, 2018 @01:23PM (#16053969)
> Amazon's goal is to kill off traditional retail, as far as I can tell.

Then why are they opening up bookstores?

Re:Apple is close to acquiring Shazam, sources say on Friday December 08, 2017 @08:31PM (#15883666)
Seems for them the cost (financially and in terms of overhead) of building that team vs. buying a very experienced one was not worth it. They almost have ~$300 billion just sitting around.
Re:Introducing the new Snapchat on Wednesday November 29, 2017 @03:53PM (#15810732)
Doesn't Instagram use the same approach on their Stories Camera on Android? Seems more of an issue with Android Camera performance/APIs than an engineering critique.
>15 years ago he put his hand on a woman's knee?

It seems like he has a history of groping women. I'm not sure why anyone should put energy into defending that behavior.

> Also, I'm fairly sure that Apple also sells data.

Can you point to a source that shows this? This sounds like a lie to me.

Calculating these metrics at scale is not trivial.
Re:Microsoft Surface Laptop Teardown on Friday June 16, 2017 @04:30PM (#14572417)
They don't seem to have a teardown of the latest MacBook Pros, but looking at the MacBook, it looks like they are heading in the same direction. https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Retina_MacBook_2017
I'm not making that assumption. The only assumption I'm making is that the parent is a male, which is based on Hacker News demographic and the type of person who usually makes these arguments.
>[As a man], I have zero problems with this and am actually a little salty I spent the time to type this reply about a non-story.

Added additional context to your statement.

Why is the question you are asking is "Why are we getting upset over this?" instead of "Why do people say unnecessarily sexist jokes that aren't actually funny?"?

Re:Did the Intercept bungle the NSA leak? on Tuesday June 06, 2017 @01:00PM (#14498811)
I think everyone would agree the leaker should be more cautious, but The Intercept should also know best practices too around printed materials too.
Black Lives Matter isn't a single person.
Re:Inside the next Xbox: Project Scorpio tech revealed on Thursday April 06, 2017 @04:13PM (#14054168)
Charts like this always get brought up, but I'm not sure there is much rigor in creating them.
Re:Google Talk Is Being Discontinued on Friday March 24, 2017 @02:22PM (#13951022)
I still use Gchat over Hangouts because it's nice seeing my contacts list sorted by who is online, as opposed being ordered by recency of last communication.

So many of my Gchat conversations have started because of the online status. I've hit up friends that I haven't talked to in over a year and had really great, synchronous, conversations because of it.

You used to (maybe still) couldn't watch Apple Keynote presentations on any other browser than Safari.
Re:Amazon’s Battle to Break into the Grocery Market on Tuesday March 21, 2017 @03:56PM (#13925635)
From the article

>“Amazon wants to be the first thing any consumer thinks of when they need to buy anything,” said Jim Hertel, a senior vice president at marketing technology company Inmar Inc. “Food is the largest retail category. They can’t do what they want to do without grocery and they’re definitely not going to give up.”

I'd also imagine Amazon thinks they can do much better than a 1.7% margin by leveraging all of the improvements to their approach outlined in the article.

Re:Mr. Robot Killed the Hollywood Hacker on Wednesday December 07, 2016 @06:48PM (#13127290)
>I care more about a good story... Which is why I stopped watching Mr. Robot at the beginning of season 2. I just didn't care about the characters or story any more...Personally, if you're looking for a good story, involving technology and morality, I can't recommend West World enough.

Interesting. The same critique you have of Mr. Robot, I have of Westworld: plot lines that are irrelevant, huge loopholes, and characters that don't develop and that I don't care for.

Re:The 2016 Election on Monday October 17, 2016 @04:23PM (#12729334)
>There is no right or wrong way to vote for third parties.

Sure, I agree with you.

However, if your goal is to make third parties viable long-term in Presidential elections and not dependent on having very unfavorable candidates from the major 2 parties, I would argue that strong local and state 3rd parties are important.

Re:The 2016 Election on Monday October 17, 2016 @03:25PM (#12728497)
If you really care about improving the viability of third parties in this country, please do that in local and state elections where it is actually possible to elect third parties.

Voting for 3rd parties in Presidential elections is fine, but really doesn't do much really and if you actually dig deep into 3rd party Presidential candidates, they're usually not great either.

Isn't Facebook still growing?
There's probably a lot more changes than you realize. I can only assume given your comments you've never worked on problems like this. There's so many benefits you can get from writing an app specifically for low-end Android devices with poor data connectivity.
Yelp reviews for ethnic food and fine dining are usually pretty poor in my opinion and also have similar issues as food critics. Also why would I care about the masses opinion on food? I'd rather read review from people who really care and know about food.
Re:Justice Department says it will end use of private prisons on Thursday August 18, 2016 @08:37PM (#12317263)
Nope, Obama and his DoJ have made criminal justice reform part of their platform.
Re:The Election Won’t Be Rigged, But It Could Be Hacked on Sunday August 14, 2016 @01:01AM (#12284332)
I think it's more depressing that the people advocating for the rules are looking to disproportionately affect the poor and/or minorities. The goal isn't reduced voter fraud. Its to win elections.

Its also concerning given the history of discriminating against black voters in this country.

Re:The Election Won’t Be Rigged, But It Could Be Hacked on Saturday August 13, 2016 @11:39PM (#12284171)
I don't think you understand how voting works in the US. Voting isn't even close to the honor system. The people who run precincts are incredibly decentralized and individual precincts have such a small impact on national elections.
Re:Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington to step down on Thursday August 11, 2016 @12:42PM (#12269709)
I'm not sure I'd consider Pando real journalism (maybe they've changed since they're behind a pay wall). Funded by VCs and they write about the tech industry.
Re:Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington to step down on Thursday August 11, 2016 @12:40PM (#12269694)
Adrian obviously acknowledged his bias. Do you have an issue with anyone writing about things they're involved in? What legitimate criticism is there on this scenario you're describing?
Re:Apple has begun to stop selling iTunes downloads on Tuesday August 09, 2016 @07:20PM (#12258362)
You can download every song to your device for offline playback.
>As mentioned above, you simply cannot compare a smartphone operating system where one handles, emails (in the cloud anyway) some personal apps and a browser to a full desktop operating system where among many other things serious work is done as well as private and enterprise data is stored.

You definitely can, Feel free to disagree, but many would argue the comparison is fair, especially considering a smart phone has replaced a desktop or a laptop for many people. But to say in such absolute terms the comparison is not appropriate is naive.
