Re:The Google Squeeze on Tuesday November 12, 2019 @03:21PM (#21517726)
There is a useful edge case to this. In my case I was searching for a specific bit of content that had too few results in English so Google started returning results based on similar search terms in another language. It took a bunch of quotes and some specific strings to get into that state in the first place though.
You can train a skill and improve on it. You can't train your head shape or arm length nearly as much. The brain is more malleable than some of the other body parts.

"Ideal state" is inserted by your own bias. There are plenty of changes made by humans to the planetary system and some of them will be undone once humans are not around to maintain those changes.

Ok fair enough. What is it about China that makes it explicitly not capitalist?

Since it's absolutely not communism, what makes it absolutely not a capitalist economy?

Then I didn't fully understand your initial post, I am sorry.
And I don't want to start that discussion. I just think it's easier to call China a totalitarian capitalist state, without torturing other labels to make them fit. It's not unthinkable for a state to miss represent it self when it comes to names or labels.
Re:The Dark Forest Theory of the Internet on Tuesday May 21, 2019 @02:42PM (#19973395)
There are plenty of exclusive communities on the internet because it's just as useful of a tool for any illegal activity as it is for corporations trying to drive more profits.
There's a pretty simple definition of communism and it's "workers own the means of production".

That's the one defining trait of communism according to any communist.

We Must Dissent
Need to call it something. Marx went with "estrangement". Alienation seems to be more commonly used today.

Japan is supposedly having a wave of popularity written by elderly featuring older protagonists with the target audience being older generations.
You'd need to specify an age group since it shouldn't be too hard to find supoort for Russia from the older generation that grew up under Soviet Union and is now feeling nostalgic for their past.
Just look at bash.org

Short, terse comments are not new. The systemic factors that cause it are somewhat different for twitter. But it's not a new occurrence.

You got trapped in the car driving mode of thinking. Commuting and traffic is a necessary burden to most people. Most see automation as a way to reduce that burden by letting them spend the cognitive resources necessary for driving on something else.

The core problem is not the car, or who is driving it, but the fact that people need to spend a not insignificant amount of time traveling to and from the location or their employment.

Well that's translation and localization for you. The end result is always filtered through the personal biases of the translator. Although to some people evil and criminal might be same thing as well.
Re:What Do Our Oldest Books Say About Us? on Thursday November 08, 2018 @11:16AM (#18407273)
Ah that sounds pretty much the same type of management philosophy as espoused in "Clouds Above The Hill" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saka_no_Ue_no_Kumo

The author attributes the successes of early Imperial Japanese Navy to the men in leadership roles being wise enough to focus on enabling their competent subordinates do their jobs and nothing more. At least a lot early 2nd volume is spent on organization and management structure. Japan spent a lot of time studying Chinese culture so it would make sense that they would addopt similar ideas.

This article https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2002/07/22/the-talent-myt... claims this "loose tight" for of leadership is responsible for collapse of Enron.

The title of article was more interesting than it's contents.
Point and call

https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/pointing-and-calling-j...

Someone linked this article in a thread related to worker safety or hazards.

There always seems to be ways to improve safety or reduce failure rate. But the problem is lack of incentive or motivation to make those improvements.

After reading the actual article. The point and call aims to eliminate the "slip" error. By keeping the human awareness focused and engaged in the activity.

Well it's just meat and potatoes, it's going to be similar to any other dish with those two ingredients.

Here's how it looks from one of the local places that makes em here https://s3-media2.fl.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/URjWrvv56mqCL4CKOkqx...

I don't think I've ever encountered Russians claiming they invented borscth. It's more of a case of the west attributing most Eastern European culture to Russia.

The other Easter European cultures obviously put some efforts to maintaining their identity in opposition to Russian dominance in the region.

Referring to https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2018/10/04/305-car-registrat...

Which is kind of a feel good story, point and laugh at those Russian idiots bungling things again.

Re:There Is No Such Thing as Unconscious Thought on Friday July 27, 2018 @09:57PM (#17631052)
The article doesn't succeed in presenting a good argument. There's a lot of attempts at making examples and using thought experiments but it doesn't actually present any sort of mechanism or model for the mental process involved.

A historical novel from Japan fully accounting the events leading up to and during the war. It was translated into English this decade.

I can't imagine why that would be intended to be humuoruos. The content of the post seems like a genuine attempt at trying to point out the potential flaws in purely text based communication via internet.

To expand on such, text doesn't carry any of the social cues that human beings learn during their development. There's no facial expressions, tone of voice, any form of body language such as posture or hand gestures. Communicating and being understood via text is very difficult, especially when one is attempting to be succinct. "Brevity is the soul of wit" does not only mean that one should strive to be brief but also that it takes great ability to accomplish such a feat aswell.

Im sorry, I’m not very knowledgeable about the plastic model industry, so I can’t answer that question. Unfortunately, I can’t really make a statement on the plastic scale modeling kits, probably because I’d be eradicated from the industry if I made his true feelings known. - Yoshiyuki Tomino

"It's not clear how the plastic is getting into the bottled water — whether it's the water source itself or the air or the manufacturing and bottling process.

"Even the simple act of opening the cap could cause plastic to be chipping off the cap," Mason said."

Does he have any relevant to the topic in the first place?
Re:How to sell a $300 chocolate bar on Friday February 23, 2018 @01:19PM (#16448143)
The article it self focuses quiet a lot on the mental framework required to create the value. The consumer has to endow the bar with value by creating a complicated mental image of the process of creating the product and then consuming it. It doesn't pretend to have value as purely a status symbol, it certainly wouldn't be able to do that without existing brand recognition.
